***The MeBeJedi DVDs *** UPDATE! (Released)
Time
Update: Okay, Just wanted to give some examples of what I am working on. Here's a 9 Mb segment comparing before and after. Te opening sequence has a slight glitch, see if you can find it. The remaining segments have the most speckles/glitches that I've come across so far, so I chose those to demonstrate what can be done with Combustion. (one of my corrected sequences has a missing frame which I wasn't aware of until now - guess I'll have to go back and fix it.) Be sure to watch it in fullscreen, as most of the speckles are actually kind of small. It may seem like overkill to fix them, but they would really show up in an anamorphic transfer. Plus, I want a pristine master for future projects (in case my LD player bites the dust.)

Anyways...stay tuned for updates. You can e-mail me at originaltrilogy@yahoo.com

And again, PLEASE POST YOUR COMMENTS IN THE OTHER THREAD

(BTW, big thanks to Zion for the use of his site for hosting!) Text

Info Wanted: for my first steps on restorations?

"Secondly, is copy protection. In fact on ANH it has the old style copy protection (where the brightness goes up and down, and generally makes the picture look messed up), and then ESB and ROTJ have the newer protection.....I'm a little uneasy about asking about how to get around the copy protection on these tapes, given the fact that it's a legal gray area"

They both use macrovision. You can buy a defeater at BestBuy

Sound question

"I've used besweet already for my current star wars DVD's but never read the doom9 guide about getting the right normalisations etc."

Which is why I like Vegas. There's so many ways to tweak the 5.1 settings for each individual speaker. You can even pan sound effects with a joystick between all speakers. I had to turn down the volume on the rear channels, because they were the same volume as the fronts, and overpowered them. I always considered going back and bringing the rear channels back up for the space sequences to blast people out of their chairs.

Yep. Keep in mind, however, that the AC3 file was made with a lossy codec, so you've lost some sound information. If you are going to edit the WAVs and make a new AC3 file, save it in the highest quality possible, since you'll lose more information the second time as well.

I believe Sonic Foundry will make your AC3, but you will need a plug-in and a serial number.

Here are my settings...

Brightness 1884
Contrast 79
Hue -704
Saturation 151
Sharpness 53
Gamma 100
White balance 0

"It's only possible to make a fair comparison of the 4:3 and 16:9 versions when playing on a TV, IMO. From what I see on the PC monitor they look pretty good."

True, but this comparison was mainly for people who wanted to see the difference on their computer monitors. People kept saying there was a noticeable difference, so now's their chance to compare two identical segments in each format.

"Talking about the brightness (sorry) have you thought about changing it before capture rather than apply filters afterwards?"

This was how I originally did it. Unfortunately, it ended up doing more harm than good. The BIGGEST problem being: if you realize later, like Zion did, that the settings are bad, you have to recapture the whole thing over. It's extremely difficult to remove the effects of such settings after the fact, without distorting something else in the video.

Now that I have a properly calibrate capture, I have a perfect reference with which to compare (as opposed to starting up the LD player whenever I want a comparison shot.) If I don't like the effect of any filters I've used, I still have a pristine master to work with.

When I get home, I'll show you guys my settings.
