"and matrixed 6 channel."

Do you have any specifics on that?

"I'm just curious as to why someone would take so much time and put so much care (it seems) into a really wonderful set and then not want it distributed?"

Well, to be quite honest, when you've put as much time, effort and money into these projects as I or Laserman or Gonzo or any of the other handful of people who have done this, it's kinda hard to just "let it go". While internet notoriety is a nice thing, it doesn't completely make up for the "family time" that was missed, or the bills that need to be paid. I still kinda shake my head when people complain about having to spend more than 5 bucks on one of these versions. They just don't get the fact that you cannot simply "rip-&-burn" LD versions like you can another DVD. It is apples to oranges, big time. I thought I would have been done with my versions at least a year ago, if not more, but better technology and techniques keep coming my way, which has required even more time and money. As I've said a couple of times, unlike the Studios, I don't have the volume for cost-effective economy of scale. Selling a DVD for 5 bucks does nothing to amortize the money I've put into this project (close to $2,000, and Laserman has spent more than me.)

I still intend to put a verion on BitTorrents, but don't believe that the thought of holding on to it (like mverta) or selling it on Ebay (though I'm too chicken) hasn't crossed my mind for various reasons.

[EDIT] I guess that's just the Capitalist in me.

"What do these have to do with DVDs though?"

Everything, if I am going to put them ON the DVDs.

I love listening to the soundtrack by itself - It wouldn't have to match up to the video perfectly, and there could be a recommendation on the menu to turn off one's TV for that particular soundtrack option.

And Bizzle, uncompressed WAVs would be nice, if at all possible. (I know how big the file sizes can get.) My original AC3 was made out of necessity, not personal preference (plus it was a case of "can I do this?". )

"I have access to some alternate orchestral versions of Star Wars score, done by Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Orchestra, as well as Charles Gerhardt and the Scottish National Symphony, including Gerhardt's entire "The Empire Strikes Back" Score he recorded, which, at the time of it's release, was the most complete recording of ESB available"

Dude, that's cool (I got the impression from the other thread that you didn't have these.) I'd love to use this stuff for another soundtrack (ESB is my favorite. I had a soundtrack DVD somewhere, and played it in class, but I can't find it anymore. )

Hell, at this point, I may have to have a separate release with all the soundtracks possible.

1) LD PCM
2) My AC3 track
3) Mono
4) Def. Col. commentary
5) Official DVD commentary (still on the fence about this one.)
6) ISOMIX score
7) Score from this new DVD
8) Bizzle's recordings

DVDLAB-Pro will let me master a DVD with 8 soundtracks, so this would max it out - but DAMN, what a repository of material that is.

(I was also considering taking some of the original voices from the EOD commentary, like David Prowse. That would be kinda funny. )

"Found it for 6 bucks at a Goodwill here in town Thing is--the exact same recordings are on the CD box set from 95, AND the SE releases"

LOL, I think I got mine for 5 bucks at Rhino records. They were giving vinyl away about 10 years ago. I was just hoping to be able to listen to it at some point in my lifetime.

"the exact same recordings are on the CD box set from 95, AND the SE releases"

Which I don't have.

"timing would be a bitch, though, as the tempos were generally slower. I'm sure you could time-stretch the songs to get them to play faster without altering the pitch, but even then, it might simply be easier to put the tracks where they were intended to go and let them play out regardless of whether they match with the action onscreen or not."

Not a problem with Vegas. I've even put two soundtracks in different speakers and listened to them with headphones in real time in order to sync them up (the video and first soundtrack were already synced - the single greatest advantage to capturing with a firewire DV camcorder) And yes, Vegas can alter tempos with or without pitch changes. I looooooove this program. It's so versatile.

"MeBeJedi, it's gonna take a lot of work to make this happen. From what I'm told, this VHS telecine is from a 16MM print that looks...well, not the best. "

Oh, I have a few contingency plans in motion.

"(for instance, "A New Hope" includes the original special "The Making Of Star Wars" plus two clips from the original mono version with Aunt Beru"

Hmmmm, that might be where this person got them from. I'll have to check my copies. Thanks for the heads-up!

"By the way, I have TMPGEnc DVD Author 1.6, and every time I add two videos to the same track the video becomes de-synched with the audio after the second track. For example, I got the new Battlestar Galactica miniseries and edited out the credits at the end of part one and beginning of part two, loaded part one onto a track in TMPGEnc DVDAuthor and then part two onto the next track. However, after the second half starts, the audio is out of sync, however if I skip back to the beginning of it the audio is back in sync, I just can't play it straight through. Not sure if this is the best thread for this, but anyone know what the deal is? Can I just not do this in that program?"

And that's why I'll never give up on Vegas. I can visually sync up the audio and video (look for spikes in the WAV at key points, like when R2 falls down after the Jawas zap him), and then I can zoom in to the exact frame and slide the audio back and forth until it is in sync. I can splice in anything I want down to the frame, and never have to worry about losing sync. I could never have made the AC3 track at the quality I wanted without it. Rikter can tell you - even though there were 3 splices in the video (each side), it is in dead-on sync throughout the movie, even if you cycle through the different soundtracks.

"@MeBe: check your PMs."

Sorry. Still working on the wedding video.

"The crawl IS generated, I know that. I believe they used After Effects. It's pretty seamless in motion."

I'm looking forward to comparing it to mine made in Combustion. It's modeled exactly after the crawl from the EOD documentary.

"Did they make the whole trilogy or just ANH?"

Well, ANH went through the most changes, so an ESB version wouldn't be much different from the others that are out there.

"as there were quite a few cues on Hoth that were cut out, but they're integrated here nicely."

You don't happen to know if they have the sequence of 3PO puling the warning sign off the door, do you? THAT would kick ass!

"But it always runs into a problem with burning a DVD from file. It says it burned sucessfully, but neither one of my DVD players nor my PC will read it! Then the dialog box I played it with said an unspecified error crept up. Every time."

What software are you using? Are you sure it is mastering the DVD correctly (i.e. is there a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directory on the DVD?) You can't drag-&-drop this stuff like an audio or data CD.)

I use NERO, and it's been perfect every time, either copying another DVD, or mastering my own.

"Speaking of which, anyone wanna put a VHS onto DVD for me?"

It would be my honor (nice to know Rikter's thinking about me too. I guess he wants me to do a nice job with his Cure LDs )

(It would give me something to do until the X0 files come in, and it would be a nice break from doing my neighbor's wedding video )
