Info Wanted: Haven't been here in a while and just need an update of site events since
Time
"Many digital video cameras have inputs that convert an analogue signal into DV for transfer into a PC via a firewire cable - this is the method used to create the TR47 version."

And it is an inferior method as well. Although it is wayyyyy more convenient (video and audio are kept in sync, much easier connections), it adds digital noise to the picture, and noticeably reduces the color pallete.

"Laserman and Zion said that part of the XO Project will be from the Definitives and not the Faces LDs"

The first version will be the Def. Col., but it won't stop there. The Faces set is my personal preference. Regardless, a variety of NTSC and PAL sources, as well as formats, are being seriously evaluated for each version. There have been a number of surprising findings when comparing versions and players.

George Lucas on 60 Minutes.

"And the OT can be released in both editions. Thus for Lucas "the house" would be white and for the those that prefer it to be green, it would be green. Why not give the fans the choice?"

But it's not the same house - unless he's willing to admit that copies of the original unaltered films no longer exist. If they do, then there are two different houses, and he has torn down the old one so no one can see what color it used to be.

Info Wanted: Hello and questions for my own project

"(aren't all the blasts extraneous? I don't remember an actual blaster bolt in the GSF scene"

Actually, the entire scene is extraneous, though that just made me wonder - where did that scene come from to begin with? It's little more than a Photoshopped pic, since the only real movement come from the lasers, Han's head and his arm. I think his foot moves too.

Anyways, I redid the scene by adding the 1-2 frames of bright light from the LD verion to the DVD footage, and it looks very good. I'll have to post it so you guys can see it.

Letterboxed Widescreen vs. Anamorphic Widescreen Discussion
Time
"doing the anamorphic conversion without using filters would be a fairer comparison "

They've both received the same treatment, so your point is moot.

"also talking about resolution differences on dvd is irrelevent because this is always dependent on what type of display your viewing the video on."

Funny that you didn't mention these details to begin with. I guess your statement should read "changing ld ripped video to anamorphic will degrade picture detail and sharpness [depending] on what type of display your viewing the video on.."?

Info Wanted: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - theatrical version on DVD?
Time
As far as I know, the DVD is not the original theatrical cut. For one thing, there's a scene where a boat is found in the middle of a desert (a clever forced-perspective shot.) I believe this was filmed much later for the Special Edition.

I don't know specifics about the Criterion Collection version, but I seem to recall there being more than one ending, if not more than one version.

[EDIT] According to IMDB: "1980 Special version. The 1977 version can be programmed. Two Pressings with several minor errors."

I know the Special Edition dropped or edited the scenes where Dreyfuss raids the neighbors' yards for building materials (my parent's favorite scene), and had an extended ending. I guess the '77 programming restores this video and shortens the ending, among other things?
