War of the Worlds
Time
Oh and about Signs: that part when Joaquin Phoenix is watching the homevideo of the birthday party in South America on the news...and you wait...you wait...are you going to see something? And right as your heart is pounding, wondering, waiting, this strange creature just walks by ever so delicately and the kids scream.

Freakiest part of the whole thing.

The rest was blah.

I know this gramatical error is easy to make but it really irritates me...like a mosquito bite...and I have to itch it...ARGGHHH!

You're = short for "You are"

Your = possessive article. EXAMPLE: Your car, your spacepod, your analprobe.

But back to the topic at hand: the film wasn't god awful. Shimraa can back me up on how I tend to hate these kind of film, but there was definitely a mood of desperation and helplessness that I haven't felt during a film in a long time. That was the film's strong point. I felt the kids' interactions with their Father was decently played out, kinda reminding me of my own experiences with my parents' divorce. The little girl was wonderful, but Spielberg could have controlled her just a teeny bit.

The obvious plot holes were pretty bad like the camcorder working, the idea that these ships were buried and awaiting their captains (which creates a whole list of plotholes in itself). While I could have suspended these mistakes for the sake of summer blockbuster fun, the son surviving was absolutely tacked on, pointless and cheap.

Did anyone else think the stepdad was going to be dead and then TC and his ex-wife would get back together and raise their daugter together? I know I was. It may sound "too good to be true" but it would have been a happy ending that wouldn't have been as tacky.

STAR WARS REVELATIONS - FAN FILM
Time
I think it just goes to show how computer generated effects are becoming less and less "special".

While it's great in the sense that now everyone can create these awesome places and make them look decently good, it sort of takes away that "wow" factor from films of before. 2001 is always a marvel to watch for me. I'm still impressed by those very special effects.

As far as the film "revelations" goes...blah. I give them praise for making such an ambitious project, but they needed better acting and less panorama shots before each scene.

From a Certain point of View...
Time
I've thought about that extensively as well: would we have like the PT better if it had come first? After a long spring in the Himalayas meditating and pressing wild flowers, I've come to the conclusion that no. In the states that they are in now, the PT is dissapointing because in the end, they are just plain bad films. They are bloated, self-congratulatory pieces of crap that wouldn't have made it past Episode 1 had that been the first film. If Lucas had done his "original vision" and kept midgets, Han as a green monster etc, would he have had as equal success? For me, the answer is no. Star Wars would have died a painful death right in 1977 and we'd only be talking about these films in terms of its kitche factor. Kinda like Howard the Duck.

From what i've observed, Lucas' "original vision" is severely flawed. The only reason Star Wars became what it is was because of talented people like Gary Kurtz, Marcia Lucas and many others who helped him create balance and shell out a story that was magical and facinating. When Lucas has complete control, he just can't get it together.

The reason the PT was bad for me was not so much the story (although a few tweaks here and there would have helped), but the fact that Lucas, to me, looks like he has no idea what he's doing. It's so painfully obvious, and I feel that the only reason people even LIKE these films is BECAUSE they are Star Wars.

Look at what Lucas has done virtually solo: Return of the Jedi, Howard the Duck, Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith. Now look what he has done in collaboration: American Graffitti, Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

See the pattern?

The Annie Angst Thread
Time
This is the thread to discuss Anakin's unfair existance as a teenager, inspired by Shimraa.

To start off, let me post this delicious quote from AOTC:

"I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals. I HATE THEM."

I bet GL was shaking in his boots after writing those lines! He must have been thinking to himself, "Damn, that's evil! I'm gooood!"

Am I the only one who thinks that puppets look fake

"Around the survivors a perimeter create. "

For me, the worst line ever uttered out of Yoda's mouth in all the Star Wars movies.

PS: Excuse me for going off topic, but I found this line on IMDB that just cracked me up: "I killed them. I killed them all. They're dead, every single one of them. And not just the men, but the women and the children, too. They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals. I HATE THEM."

The CG Yoda might have better articulation with his body, but I thought his performance was better in ESB.

It was very controlled and effective, whereas the CG yoda just seemed like an animator's show off toy.
To me, it just screamed, "Look at his mustache hair! Look how it moves! Look how every square inch of skin moves whenever he does something simple like move his arm! You can't do THAT with a muppet!"

To show I'm not a total CG bigot, let's take the example with Gollum: the greatest CG character created thus far in my opinion. No fucking way could this character have been pulled off by a puppet. What stood Gollum out from the rest was the fact that they paid such close attention to intricate details like a slight shift in eyes, the lighting, his movements. Because of this attention to detail, they made a believable character (c'mon, who didn't cry when he had that talk with himself when the others were sleeping?).

With yoda - and this is the case with a lot of the SFX in the PT - it all seemed like effects for effects sake. It was cold and distant. it didn't fit in. It was all so rushed, so fake.

By the way, can someone explain to me why Yoda's english is better after 30 years of exile on Degobah?

Well put greencapt.

So Shimraa, we meet again at last....

Things you never noticed before in the films

Didn't they just find one part though? From them they followed their tracks...which lead them to the Sandcrawler which lead them to Luke's home.

Wait now that I think about it...if they were following the tracks of the Sandcrawler...they would have passed by Luke's house first...I'm sure they would have interrogated any household that that monster of a machine passed by?

Oh god...it's just a movie!
