Help Wanted: 'LONE WOLF & CUB' - Restoring the audio from laserdisc? Blu-Ray audio is whacked!
Time

Guys… is it just me or is the audio for the Blu Rays completely messed up on disc 2? It sounds metallic, with a shrill, harsh kind of echo. Completely unnatural. It’s so bad I cannot stand to hear the audio at all.

I have the DVD’s and they sound better, despite being compressed DD. And while I no longer have the laserdiscs they did not not NOT sound like this.

For some reason disc 1 is nowhere near as bad.

Does anyone still have the laserdiscs?

I much prefer the MGM extended DVD cut from Europe. It is awesome... Except for two changes.

1. It doesn't have the line, "Good... Bad... I'm the guy with the gun."

2. The S-mart ending is so much funnier.

No questions that everything else about the longer cut is better. It's not fluff or filler.

Sounds like a good idea for an edit.

I would have purchased one of the European releases but since my absolute most favorite line was still not put into place I passed. So a special edit would certainly be welcome. :)

I have two suggestions...

First of all, TENEBRAE has a sensational HD transfer known as the Wildside transfer. Synapse and Arrow are releasing the same transfer on some SE's soon. But they will be mono. Now that's fine. The film was mono originally.

BUT... Anchor Bay did a very good remix of the film for DVD years ago. It's one of the only 5.1 remixes I actually like and you guys know I despise most remixes. However, the Anchor Bay DVD transfer was from a damaged source so it's missing footage and that means the remix cannot be lined up with the HD source.

This is where maybe Team Blu can work some magic. I don't know if you can get that intricate with sound editing but perhaps there is a way to restore this mix so it can be muxed in with the HD Wildside transfer.

next suggestion...

SHOUT AT THE DEVIL!

It aired on MGM-HD (I believe) and I had it on my old DVR. It was the only time I know of that the full length uncut version was shown and it looked and sounded terrific. Such a great film. A true classic and easily Roger Moore's best non 007 picture. Lee Marvin was awesome.

Help: looking for... POLICE STORY 3 Hong Kong Laserdisc - for stereo restoration
Time

Well, I really hate dubs, but if the quality is good, I'll include it.

The additional scenes would have to be upscaled since there are no real HD transfers available. I am toying with ONLY doing a Supercop cut and restoring audio and subs to it without the additional scenes. Upscaled footage would be blatantly obvious.

Help: looking for... POLICE STORY 3 Hong Kong Laserdisc - for stereo restoration
Time

Gents and ladies, I have searched long and hard for this LD, but continue to come up short. The ONLY true to the source Stereo release of POLICE STORY III was the Hong Kong Laserdisc (image at bottom).

The Japanese laserdisc is mono, which is useless since the theatrical release was in stereo and Jackie Chan’s first film with sync sound. The Hong Kong laserdisc accurately captures what is a pretty darned good sound mix.

Unfortunately, my quest to restore that soundtrack to some now available High Def video is proving impossible because no one has this laserdisc.

I am hoping someone here has this title and is willing to help me capture the PCM Digital sound or perhaps knows someone who owns this release.

It was a double disc set (they spread the film across two discs to charge more money) and looked like this…

Police Story 3 HK LD

Please bare in mind that the Criterion SUPERCOP laserdisc is useless, as it has the mono version of the soundtrack (and it’s terrible muffled and low in volume to boot).
