MrBrown, I believe that release is an upconvert, yes? Or no?

Solo, no doubt the film is not a dark one, but the Japanese BD is very clearly brighter than normal. There are virtually no deep blacks. I reduced brightness by about 13% and it looks eons better.

I was a huge laserdisc guy, buy I cannot watch them now without my eyes bleeding. They are beyond poor.

Still, I hung on to many titles knowing the PCM sound might come in handy down the road. Thank God I thought to do that!

Converting/Transcoding VC-1 to something supported by CS5

Thanks. I have tried using AviSynth and failed miserably. I feel like it's written for NASA scientists. I don't even know what FFVideoSource is. Obviously I need to do some research.

Using an intermediate codec definitely sounds like something I should attempt since this project will need to be frame accurate. I just need to figure out how to go about it.

Disc space won't be an issue if I move a few things around.

My HARD BOILED audio syncing of the Criterion laserdisc is essentially done. All that is left is some EQ.

The video on the Japanese transfer is too bright (in my view) so I have reduced it 13 clicks and it looks much much better.

As I type this the video is rendering in Premiere Pro. So this is coming along. After the EQ I will have to decide exactly how to create my final ISO file. I have never handled this stage of the game myself so it's kind of unknown territory for me.

Oh yes, I still need to go through the second half of the subtitle script to check for errors and stilted grammar.

Gents and ladies, another conundrum. One of my hybrid projects is DRUNKEN MASTER II.

The problem is Premiere Pro crashes trying to import the m2ts file and I have discovered this is due to its being a VC-1 encode.

I will want to maintain the quality of the transfer (it's 1080p 24fps) so that when I output for a new Blu-Ray, I am not going to get something noticeably inferior.

My plan is to sync up the old soundtrack from the laserdsic (because it's just better) and also splice in some missing scenes (the Blu-Ray is missing the original ending) from a DVD source. Of course I will also have subtitles.

I've really no idea where to begin as far as what is the correct method of converting or transcoding to something usable. My system is a PC and I have CS5 Production Premium and I do have DVDfab.

I don't have the Japanese BD (which from all I know is just the Fortune Star upscale) so I am not sure. I'm basically working only on Hard Boiled at the moment since I am new to having to do everything involved with a hybrid (normally I had help) so it's a slow process.

Right now Hard Boiled's audio is synced. Now I need to learn how to do subtitles. I have CS5 and will need to create the Blu-Ray with Encore, so that's what I looking at now.

Converting MKV for use with Adobe Premiere Pro without re-encoding help
Time

What I'm doing now is this...

DVDfab to rip the BD onto my hard drive in a folder structure. i took the main movie's .m2ts file and stuck it onto my other drive and have put it into a Premiere pro timeline.

I rendered it, which has solved the playback issues.

I am now syncing the PCM audio from the laserdisc. The 5.1 remix is a mess and laughably out o sync at tims. Amateur hour. Thankfully the lasersisc audio lines up nicely after a while and then neds few adjustments.

I'm 90 minutes in.

What to do when I am finished? No idea! I'll cross that bridge when I come to it this weekend.

It's getting better as I move along. I wanted to stop, but whatever. I have another half hour to spare. The credits were a real mess to edit and there are sections here and there that are a bitch, but for the most part the LD is syncing to the action on screen more so than the actual remix that came with the BD. Crazy!

One thing I am going to do when possible is fix dialogue or sounds that were not in sync on any mix. That's only doable when music or complicated background noise is not present.

My God, what a mess. I tell you, not a single Hard Boiled soundtrack has good sync. Be it the original mix from the laserdiscs or one of the DVD and BD remixes. They all suck in regards to sync sound once you sit down and examine them. Since Hong Kong films of that era were shot MOS and later dubbed, the voices are all off. Sometimes dramatically so. It goes unnoticed when you are just looking at subtitles.

With Woo, much more care was put into making sure gun shots lined up and here is where the laserdsic track is superior. Once I realized I could just line up some gunshots and let it go, I started making things easier.

You cannot sync this film up by fiddling with the laserdisc track until it lines up with the remix because the timing of all of the sound and music queues are different.

The remixes play around with where music starts and as far as background foley, forget it. They didn't even bother trying to get it right. That goes for gun shots, explosions, basic sounds, voices, etc.

I've just about finished the first 25 minutes, which is side 1 of the Criterion Collection laserdisc. I have nearly 40 edits and will likely have a few more before that first side is completed.

I hope to do a section every other day.

Converting MKV for use with Adobe Premiere Pro without re-encoding help
Time

Gents, I normally receive my stuff in a format I can stick on Adobe Premiere Pro. MKV's are not compatible.

What I want to do with the current project is take the MKV I have and convert it for use with Adobe Premiere Pro (on a PC and not on a MAC) but without re-encoding the video. MKV is just a wrapper and I should be able to get the file inside for use.

On a MAC you would take a BD, extract the video & audio file with MakeMKV and then use MP4tools to do a transcode or passthrough (I do not know the correct terminology) to a file compatible with Premiere Pro. This allows you to sync up a new soundtrack and you have not tampered with the video and can then export to Encore. I am looking for an MKVtools alternative with a PC.

I hope I am making sense here. My current project is the HARD BOILED Blu-Ray and I am having some trouble. Thanks

The shots look amazing. I have no real problem with the BD's color timing, though I think I might prefer yours. My gripe has always been the audio. I am sickened by how terrible the remix is and more sickened by Universal's refusal to fix the problem.

As for which cut of the film I prefer... I grew up with the theatrical, but the director's cut is an interesting alternative. Basically, I like them both.

POLICE STORY - The perfect storm for a hybrid & restoration is here (Released)
Time

I've done it before. As long as the sound is clean and the video source is free of errors, it just comes down to lining them up and when they go out of sync, make a cut and slide. If there is constant syncing issues, frequently it's because one is running faster than the other, even though it should. In those cases a speed and pitch adjustment is needed. Sampling Hard Boiled, I don't think it will be difficult.

Subtitles will be hard for me because I have always had help. This will be my first time going it alone and I am quite frankly intimidated.

I've no idea where to begin.
