Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I’ve come to realize how controversial and slightly toxic this thread is starting to become. I’m going to go ahead and unsubscribe. It was great being subscribed to the Episode IX spoiler thread for a year now, and I will definitely continue to go forth on this amazing site. Let’s all hope that The Rise of Skywalker turns out to be amazing, maybe even the best entry in the franchise’s series of films. We can only hope. The Force will be with you. Always.

The only true trustworthy spoiler source for TROS is RedLetterMedia. According to them, we will get time travel and it will get Endgame treatment! For my speculation, Than… No, Palpatine wants to harvest all Skywalker lightsaber crystals, and once he has all of them… He will become the most powerful Chosen One in the galaxy! Meanwhile, Rey and the gang have to figure out how to beat Palpatine at his own game and collect these crystals before he does! Time is of the essence to prevent Palpatine from Snap! Crackling! And popping his… old joints. (it’s a long time ago in a galaxy far far far away, so I don’t think they invented infinity gauntlets)

Or I’ll just wait for a more solid trailer to come out.

RedLetterMedia is also very well known for trolling with their fans, but not in a dirty way, more of a humorous way.

That makes a lot of sense. Grievous receiving orders about moving to Mustafar always felt like it was moved up earlier in the film, since it’s a good while before he actually does.
I feel like LOE reverts the movie to an earlier version, largely, and I’d love to see an older rough cut.

I liked how you removed Palpatine giving Grievous the orders to move the Separatists to Mustafar. I like the idea that Grievous is making the order himself, but the Separatist leaders cannot escape Palpatine because he knows their location due to being a Sith Lord.

I love the milking scene, too. Excellent stuff.

I really like that TLJ had something to say, where I felt TFA didn’t.

I think TFA nailed the ‘feeling’ and language of a SW movie but lacked mythic substance. I felt TLJ inverted this somewhat.

All that is to lead up to this: I’d hope TROS maintains the moviemaking sensibilities of TFA (but with a willingness to slow the fuck down some of the time) and the mythic substance of TLJ.

Couldn’t have said any better.

Let’s not derail this thread into talking about The Last Jedi again. Ultimately for me, I really like the Sequel Trilogy, and I can’t wait for The Rise of Skywalker, but I completely lost faith and trust in the fanbase after the horrific behaviors that came out of hating The Last Jedi and disgusting words. It’s alright to have your own opinion on something, just don’t affect someone else’s enjoyment. This is why I can’t seem to side with fans anymore based on the toxicity.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)
Time

Here’s a question I’d like to throw at you, Hal. Let’s just say that Anakin makes an appearance as a Force spirit in The Rise of Skywalker, with Hayden Christensen reprising the role. Even though it may or may not happen, if it were to happen, would you keep the Special Edition change made to the end of Return of the Jedi, or would you restore Sebastian Shaw like everyone else? I still prefer the older Anakin, but I’m curious what you would do with your edit of Return of the Jedi if it does happen in Episode IX.

Game of Death was one of the worst examples of bringing back dead actors in a movie. However, not to go off topic, if Game of Death was finished today, they would probably use motion capture and CGI to bring Bruce Lee back. Very much like Peter Cushing in Rogue One.

Mr. Sunday Movies pointed out something interesting about the shot with Leia in his breakdown.

https://youtu.be/dcDZ67rHxgI?t=87

They may have used CGI to digitally layer Carrie Fisher’s face onto another actress. I don’t know if that is true, but so far what I am seeing of Leia definitely is doing a very good job of not taking me out of Episode IX and making me feel as if I’m watching footage shot for one of the other films.

Though I do feel that the whole 'child with his toys" argument could be used for pretty much any SW films, especially ANH. I mean, the DS when described to someone who isn’t a SW fan does sound like something a seven year old would come up with. Same goes for a lot of the twists, coincidences, etc. of SW. I mean, isn’t this craziness kinda why we love these films? And its not like this craziness isn’t accompanied by good storytelling, character development, etc.

I understand what you are saying, and like how people like J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson were once those kids and got the opportunity to make a Star Wars movie. However, those aforementioned Legends stories feel more like they are from the brain of a child, rather than the heart of a child. Not to go off topic, but a perfect example of this would be Yoda having a lightsaber. A decision that the creator himself even made that contradicts everything of what made Yoda the incredible character he has been for almost forty years.

My theory is 3PO gets lost in the Death Star wreckage, finds Palpatine’s darkside spirit, and he uses the droid as a host until he finds Rey.

As much as I really don’t like that idea, you cannot deny that sounds a lot like what Voldemort did in Harry Potter. After he lost all his powers, he had to survive off of different mediums before being reborn into a new body in the Goblet of Fire. This here sounds like how he shared Quirrell’s body by having his face on the back of his head.

I just don’t understand why fans really want cloning to be brought back into the franchise. The cloning stories that the old expanded universe told involving Palpatine, Luke and Starkiller were just so ridiculous and I would go as far to say they were awful. It just felt like fan service at a ridiculous new height and power. I do believe that J.J. Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy and everyone else at Lucasfilm are way too smart to think of and include an idea of Rey fighting a Dark Side clone of herself. I honestly don’t know why fans would want to see something as bonkers and nonsensical as this idea sounds to me.

Why would cloning be so weird? There was a galaxy-spanning clone war, so why is it so silly that a Sith obsessed with eternal life would dabble in cloning. That’s not to say I think Rey should be a clone (I think that would be unnecessary), but I don’t get why its inclusion in the EU is often perceived so negatively.

It’s because the ideas and usages of cloning became so far fetched and crazy to the point where writers were using it because they may have thought it would’ve been cool. Almost like something a kid would do when playing with their toys. To me, the usages of cloning that was done in the old expanded universe was really silly and didn’t feel like Star Wars.

As for the Clone Wars, it made sense for that considering how Palpatine was in control of the facility and the war. Plus, there’s a reason why it was called the Clone Wars. But I do think that involving Jango and Boba Fett within the cloning in the Prequels was quite unnecessary, but that’s a whole other discussion.

TBH I don’t really care if people like the old cloning stories or not, it’s just that I never get a clear reason as to why exactly it “didn’t feel like Star Wars”. Overused, cliched, gimmicky, fine, I don’t see it that way, but I understand those arguments. But how it’s not Star Wars-y is just weird to me especially when an entire era in SW is based on cloning. And how is cloning a whole army OK, but Palpatine having a few backups is suddenly “far fetched”. A cop-out, maybe, a convenient excuse to bring him back, sure, but why is this so crazy compared to the other things we’ve seen/read in SW? If anything its a rather mundane Sci-Fi trope compared to the magic and mysticism that we’ve grown accustomed to in the franchise.

The reason why it began not feeling like Star Wars was because the story was going into outrageous directions that felt like the writers of the stories were not understanding what made Star Wars the special franchise it is. It’s simular as to what happened with Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Jack Thorne, the playwright of the Cursed Child, was going into far fetched directions that made people feel like he didn’t have a good grip, understanding, and knowledge of what made the series so great and how J.K. Rowling made it worked. The same goes here. I’m not saying that George Lucas is the only person who understands the franchise and everyone else doesn’t, (even though I sometimes get the feeling George doesn’t understand his series based on some of the questionable decisions he made with the Special Editions and the Prequels) but the writers of those mentioned Legends stories were going into paths that you could see a kid playing with toys or Star Wars games would’ve made the choice to do because they thought it would be “cool.” Let’s not forget that there was a comic series about zombie Gungans and that the droid who’s motivator blew up in A New Hope had the Force in old Legends comics.

Also, on a side note, while Star Wars has many Sci-Fi elements found within the Galaxy, I would classify the franchise as being more along the lines of fantasy due to its storytelling, characters and mythology.

It could just be a force vision. Imagine if this shot had been in the ESB trailer.

Let’s also not forget that the trailers for The Force Awakens showed us the shots of Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren in the rain, which was seen in Rey’s Force vision. Not saying it’s true, but I do believe that seeing Rey on the Dark Side is very possibly a vision that Ben sees of her as Palpatine’s apprentice.

The Special Look was really nice. The new stuff we go from Episode IX looks great. The Dark Side Rey could possibly be some Force vision that Ben has of what would happen if Palpatine made her his apprentice. However, even though I don’t think this will happen, does anyone here remember a fan theory that went around online when The Force Awakens was released? The theory was that at the end of the trilogy, Ben would be redeemed as a Jedi, and Rey would fall to the Dark Side.

They just put out a brand new trailer for the film at D23 this weekend! From what I’ve heard, they may release it online on Monday (don’t know how true that is), but from what I’ve heard from people who saw it, they said that Rey appears wearing black robes and wielding a double bladed red lightsaber.

I do hope that heated arguments on both this thread and the entire fan base will eventually die by this December, or at least in the next few years. I just would like to have fun with both the franchise and the fandom without being yelled at or harassed for my thoughts and appreciations.

Oh you think it’s bad now, things are gonna go nuclear come December. On the one hand you have all the fans who are primed to hate it no matter what, on the other you have fans with high expectations for the film that could never be met. It won’t be pretty.

Then I might as well just unsubscribe from this thread, then.
