Is someone finishing work on the crackly saber shots?
Is someone finishing work on the crackly saber shots?
Do people seriously hate Hayden this much? Lol.
Hayden the person? No. But I do hate the idea that Anakin reverts to his younger self upon his death because “that’s when he was good.” Anakin was on the “good side” when he died; that’s the whole point of ROTJ’s ending. He should appear as the version of himself that died saving his son from the Emperor IMO.
But I’m talking more about the ROTJ ghost there. For TROS it’s not the biggest deal for me. The reasoning of “if Lucasfilm would’ve done it, it would’ve been with Hayden” is 100% perfectly sound.
But discussion on a Shaw ghost should be moved elsewhere until the idea actually comes to fruition in some form.
I totally agree. To put it short, Luke wouldn’t have recognized his father at a younger age, and if Anakin can appear as his younger self after death, then how come Alec Guinness isn’t replaced by Ewan McGregor then? Anyways, moving on.
This may sound hilariously stupid, but what if somebody 3D modeled Shaw’s head and used photo-based textures for it? Then it could be composited into the shots for the redone ending. It would be a pain in the butt, but it might be worthwhile.
It’s worth a try.
Yeah. There aren’t that many images of him, especially when older. There are plenty of production photos of him in the Darth Vader makeup, though.
Also, I have to admit that some of the images I put together look a bit more like Denis Lawson (Wedge Antilles).
Someone had recreated Sebastian Shaw from an image of Tobey Maguire. I decided to put together a gallery myself to possibly help jonh with a new Force ghost sequence.
Hmmmm, I think it could work (although he looks kind of odd in some of the pictures)
But we should only use pictures where Tobey’s hairstyle resembles the one that Sebastian had in ROTJ (and also where Tobey’s beard is pretty much non-existent), mostly because FaceApp tries to merge both hairstyles and you might end up with an “emo” Sebastian Shaw
That is true. I at least tried my best.
Feels… inauthentic. Based on how Jonh has manipulated faces in the past I would think pulling real images of Shaw could work. But hey, I don’t know.
Those just… look like a recast for the role of old Anakin to me.

I have now started work on this project.
I’ll have to go back and listen for comparisons. It’s just that these voice doubles are really noticeable at times. Also, wasn’t Sarah Douglas dubbed the entire film?
The REALLY noticeable difference in voices is Stamp/Zod. In the Lester scenes and the Donner scenes in the theatrical version, his voice was pitched a bitch lower to make him sound more menacing. When you watch the Donner Cut that has entirely new scenes with him, his normal voice is present and it’s clearly higher than what we’re used to hearing. This is just one of the many reasons I can never take Michael Thau seriously when he talks about putting the Donner Cut together. His main job is a sound designer, not a film editor, but even then he didn’t do his job right since he forgot to either go to the original dailies with Stamp’s original line readings, or to simply dub Stamp’s voice in the new Donner scenes so there’s consistency.
Say what you will about Lester, but at least him and his crew remembered the “little things” like, oh I dunno, the sound of police sirens and bedlam on the streets below after the Metropolis battle and they’re all talking in Perry’s office. In the theatrical cut, you hear all of it. In the Donner Cut? Nothing. It’s beyond obvious that they’re clearly in a soundstage/studio. Hell, you even hear something in the background FALL and hit the ground during the scene when Lois figures out Clark is Superman (when the 2 of them are in Perry’s office alone right before she jumps).
How does a professional miss these things, plus a million more I’m not gonna bother listing because I’ll get banned for spamming the page.
I think Oliver Harper put it best about Michael Thau and his efforts in reconstructing the Donner Cut.

I really wish Warner Bros had given them a larger budget and assembled some professional people to help supervise the Superman II project like they did for Blade Runner: The Final Cut.
Personally, I never understood why the majority of the actors’ onset lines were dubbed over by soundalikes for the Donner Cut like with Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder and other minor actors. I can understand a bit why this was done for Zod and Ursa, but not for others. The vocal delivery of the soundalikes also sound phony to me. Even in the theatrical cut, there are a few times where you see Gene Hackman speak, yet it’s the soundalike dubbing over for him. Very strange.

This would be awesome to see! I am definitely interested whenever you get that project done.
Thanks! I’m looking forward to working on Superman II the most probably, but the only way it can happen is if I’m able to get someone talented in VFX to help me out.
I think if the Biomes shot were to be included, a lot of color grading and VFX to change the landscape would have to be done since the Mustafar atmosphere in Biomes is based on Rogue One, not The Rise of Skywalker.
Man, this is amazing! You’re doing such great work on this franchise. I’m loving the audio books as well! So glad I found this page and thank you! Can’t wait for HBP and DH!
Thanks, Soliman. However, I think the praise should go to JJ here since this is his thread.
Hey, JJ! I wanted to show this off to you. These are some samples I put together to show how some trailer shots can be incorporated back into the films. I also made an attempt to try and restore the unreleased scene of Draco throwing his wand to Harry.
Enjoy, and let me know what you think about them.

That’s cool that he could generate that for us, but I agree the whole enterprise of AI voices would be an uphill battle and unlikely to feature here.
I’ll still try out a sample for test screening. It’s okay if it doesn’t make it into V2 of Ascendant. Would you like to at least add it to the Drive folder, Hal?
Also, if this does gets used, even though it seems unlikely as of now, I think you should credit Speaking of AI, as I let him know that I’d try to get him a Special Thanks credit.
Yeah that video I sent has an impression of both him and Palps. Sounds pretty good, I might add.
EDIT: Managed to install software on my laptop here and yeah… the audio just doesn’t work. Adam says, “what could you give me?” with a pretty deep voice, so it sticks out like a sore thumb.
I did watch JXEditor’s attempt, and I thought the impression used was very hard to hear, as it only came through my left rear channel.
I could try putting together a little sample to see if it works. I also might try recording the line myself, as I do have a deep voice and can do a pretty good job at a Kylo Ren impression.
It might sound better in the actual scene but as of right now I’m not sure about the line tbh. Wish I had access to my software rn.
I’m the same way. Speaking of AI did say that it might be best to get a voice actor who can impersonate Driver instead.
It’s ironic that we’re talking about the model, because Speaking of AI just provided me the line, “You’re just a clone.”

Apparently other people don’t like the idea of Kylo saying “You’re just a clone” because it may lead the audience to believe that this isn’t the real Palpy. But that’s kinda countered by Palpy’s new line, “Kill me, and my spirit will pass into you.” So yeah, I hope he can do that one line for us. It’s a nice diss by Kylo (even though it isn’t entirely true). Even if Hal doesn’t want the line in this edit I would absolutely put that in my personal version of 2.0.
And include the line in the fan editor package on Drive.
Just got word back from Speaking of AI. Here’s what he had to say.
“I’m well, thanks.”
“Unfortunately, the updates to my AI models didn’t go as well as I’d hoped. I can control the emotion a little better - but the quality of the speech drops considerably. Also, I don’t have a good method to get Adam Driver to do a “soft” voice - which is required for some of the lines.”
“To be honest, I don’t think the technology is there yet, for this kind of project. It’s okay for narration, but not for real acting/emoting. You’re probably better off getting a voice actor to do a Kylo Ren impersonation.”
“Sorry about that - but I wish you all the best with the project.”
I responded back to see if the line, “You’re just a clone” could still be used.
“You’re just a clone”?
It’s for when he points his lightsaber at Palpatine before he says “What could you give me?”
