2006 OT DVD: Well today's the day...

The quality has its ups and down. For the most part, these look better than most of the bootlegs I've seen, then every once in a while there will be a shot that just looks like ass that takes away from it. Still, right now the thrill of seeing an official release of the old school OT is outweighing any quality issues.
I went with the Best Buy set.
I put my HD rip German 97 SEs in the place of the 04 discs in this set, then put the 04 discs in the case of my old 04 set. I'm just going to give away my extra set of 04 discs.
I was going to pick up the lego game while we were there, but the girl I was with was giving me a ration of sh*t teasing me about being a f*ckin' nerd, so I just grabbed my Seven Samurai, SW tin, and made an exit before drawing too much attention.

You should have said STUFU.

So someone please answer me this:

Is it truly worth upgrading at this point from my bootlegs? My bootlegs are taken directly from the laserdiscs on DVD+R discs. They look fairly nice, the only one that I'm not entierly satisfied with is A New Hope.

It's worth it. See my review of SW in the 'first impressions' thread:

Thanks Mierlr. I think I'm sold. I'm heading on over to Circuit City to pick up the new Dragon Ball Z movie (the 13th and final one) because its only ten bucks over there. I think I'll pick up the trilogy too. After all, I really want those lithiographs.

The lithographs are awsome. I was expecting them to be the size of a DVD case, but they are so much bigger and far more beautiful than I ever expected them to be.

First Impressions of the OOT ...

Aaah, so many good posts and so many things I want to address. Let's get cracking!

First of all, I watched Star Wars on my computer, with a 15.4" hi-def widescreen and zoomed in. The zooming didn't really affect the picture quality as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure it would look much better on a standard definition TV. As I guessed, the grain wasn't as noticeable in a lot of the scenes on the Death Star. Something else I noticed was how a lot of lines in the picture ended up very jagged-y. I'm not sure of the terminology for that. And as long as I'm on the subject, what is aliasing?

I, too, had the layer change. I knew it was there, because it was there on the '04 DVDs as well. It makes me sad that I'm almost used to it by now, and when I don't get a slight pause, it throws me off.

Unlike some others, my subtitles aren't quite cut off. The very bottom of the second line is, but nothing is unreadable. Of course, if they just left the subtitles burned into the original picture in the original font, then we wouldn't have problems like this in the first place! Honestly, this is my biggest gripe. I hate that.

In regards to the red line on the screen, I haven't watched Empire yet. But as long as the subject is up, I noticed a blue line on the edge of the frame in two scenes, both of which are part of the planet Yavin. If you're watching on a standard TV, I'm sure you wouldn't be able to see it at all, as I know it would be part of the overscan area, but if you watch it on a computer or an LCD screen, has anybody else noticed this?

Well, I think that's it. I really enjoyed the movie and was so into it by the Battle of Yavin that I didn't really notice anything bad about the picture anymore.

My biggest problems are the horrible ghosting and and the aliasing. other than that they are pretty good.

P.S. My copy of ESB has more grain than Star Wars.

P.S. Thanks a lot for the KOTOR soundtrack, Marvolo. Unfortunately my machine says that all of the files are corrupted. Does anyone else have this problem?

The problem might have something to do with the way that WinRAR archived the files before I uploaded them. I will archive them again, and try uploading them agian.

I have uploade the music in individual files:

Atonement

Darth Sion

Jedi Theme

null

Kreia Dark

Mus Grovel

I will upload some more later.

Are you Italian?

LOL! So, what say you, Marv?

No, that was just a typo, but I do have a passion for Italian food.

P.S. SweHanzon, we love to see new people on these boards. It means this happy family is getting bigger and bigger.

I like the shake though, it gives it a film quality which I love *puts love emotion here*, I jsut wish it was a proper transfer

I agree, the shake gives the film atmosphere. Also, I like the little pieces of grit here and there, because it is something you don't see in movies any more. But the OOT has that, and I am glad that I can get a piece of film history that will last longer than my VHS's will.

I don't like dirrty grit but I love marks that were always in the film. Like whats on a rough homemade 16mm film or something like that.

I love it all! Long live the OOT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marvolo, I did some digging in AE 6.5 and this is what I found:

Top tool bar: Composition: Make Movie: save file as "[your title].avi" (".avi" is the only file extension the Render Queue will allow you to have, but the final file type is not locked-in by this).
Render Queue: find your file at the bottom of the render list; Output Module: click "lossless": Output Module Settings: select "MPEG2" or "MPEG2-DVD".

I convert most everything I do for work to a DVD-compliant MPEG2, though I haven't done it in AE yet, but I imagine you want your MPEGs for DVD. So, you probably want "MPEG2-DVD" at the highest quality you can get, which in 6.5's standard codec profiles are "NTSC DV 4x3 Low Quality 6MB VBR 1 Pass" and "NTSC Progressive 4x3 High Quality 7MB CBR 1 Pass". There are versions in PAL, too, as well as 16x9.

I hope this helps!

Thanks, darkhelmet. This helps a so much!

Or should I leave the "Episode One" logo in? If not I was going to try and find some centered pictures so it fills more of the box.

On that note, what about a fan-created project cover:

Those are pretty.
