Dealing with People Selling Fan Projects
Time

That whole damn listing is laughable. That scumbag has clearly been reading what we’ve been saying about people selling fanedits and tailored that “sales pitch” around any potential objections.

They’ve missed the point that it’s simply morally wrong to sell them. If you want to help people to view the edit then HELP them, don’t sodding well charge them!!

I always read yhwx as the individual letters. I’d like to know what it means actually!

Incidentally, I chose my username because when I made the profile there were an overwhelmingly large amount of people accidentally posting the markdown syntax blank post template. It (like many of my witticisms) seemed funny at the time. Now you’ve written it, Ash, I don’t think I care for MDOYS but I don’t mind how my username is used - if any of you know my real name you can call me by that.

A gloomy, cold Sunday with nothing better to do than watch a box set is what happened to me today. So now it’s time for another Mark’s Down On Your Syntax wall of text review post! Yay!

A Nightmare On Elm Street - It’s cheap and flimsy-looking today but it’s got so much good stuff going on, a classic as far as I’m concerned - 5 marshmallow staircases out of 5.

Part 2, Freddy’s Revenge - It’s as daft as a brush and sometimes doesn’t stick to its own rules but it’s fun enough and gets an extra point for all that gorgeous subtext - 3 possibly-gay-teens out of 5.

Part 3, Dream Warriors - Best storyline in the series and some of my favourite effects work too. Also it has a young, buff Larry Fishburne… if you’re into that (I’m into that.) - 4 tall, wide-shouldered black men out of 5.

Part 4, The Dream Master - As much as there is to like, there’s just as much to dislike. But somebody gets turned into a bug and then squashed in a trap so it’s hard to come away unhappy - 3.3 HE-directed-this-'s?! out of 5.

Part 5, The Dream Child - Ironically, I fell asleep half an hour in. I was not murdered, however, and upon waking I rewound the blu-ray and resumed watching this poorly stitched together series of good ideas. I give it 1.5 Ah Ha music video rip-offs out of 5.

Part 6, Freddy’s Dead - Way more bonkers and daring than it gets credit for, if you’ve never seen it or it’s been a while give it a watch and you might find yourself enjoying it. I give it 3.5 Freddy’s Dads out of 5.

Wes Craven’s New Nightmare - It’s got some pacing problems which I can’t quite put my finger on but it’s a clever, deft piece of self-referential moviemaking that deserves attention from more than just horror fans. Don’t like Freddy’s new look though - 4 terrifying playground climbing frames out of 5.

Freddy versus Jason - Everything and the kitchen sink thrown at you whether you want it or not. Barmy story, beautifully ghastly kills, great practical effects (and some cgi which hasn’t aged too badly) and overacting of THE HIGHEST calibre. Monica Keena’s performance in the scene in the high school corridor about half an hour in is a thing of pure beauty. Absolutely, ironically and seriously my favourite of the lot - 5 seemingly inappropriate Chinese directors who turned out to be awesome out of 5.

I didn’t watch the remake with Rooney Mara because I don’t own it.

Yeah, disc 2 of the original Halloween. It doesn’t sound like I’m missing out on too much though (I think most of those special features might’ve been put on YouTube by now anyway!) I’ve ordered the individual release of Halloween II with the TV cut and with my plentiful producer’s cut of VI I don’t feel too bad.

I really want to see that TV cut of the original - I hope it finds its way onto the next individual release!

You guys in the US are lucky with some of your blu ray releases. It took me ages to get a copy of that 10 disc set and I had no idea the 15 disc set existed!! Despite eBay, some things are like gold dust if you live abroad!

Does anybody here own the 15 disc Halloween blu Ray set? If you do, or even if you don’t and you just know, please tell me what the heck is on disc 2 - I’ve been trying to research it to absolutely no avail!

I own the 10 disc set and had no idea an even larger one was released. Dang their britches!

In other news, thanks to Silverwook mentioning it the other week and making me aware of its existence I’ve bought the producer’s cut of Halloween 6 - trouble is, I’ve accidentally ordered two copies and neither is returnable (well, not unless I tell some fibs, and Mark’s Down don’t roll like that.) They haven’t arrived yet but if anybody here wants the spare when it comes they’re welcome to it (it’ll be a Region A.)

It’s not often I encounter somebody who talks to me about Star Wars in real life. The man I met today has made me very grateful for this.

He began his lecture (based on us being on nodding terms and my often wearing Star Wars clothing of some kind) with the old “I hate Disney” routine but followed it up with something quite novel. He educated me on the fact that all of Disney’s recent output was just stolen from George Lucas!

The Force Awakens was a straight-up copy of the original film and all they did was swap a boy for a girl in the lead role. The whole plot of stealing the Death Star plans was taken directly from a game and they only changed one word in the title (he was referring to The Force Unleashed.) Somehow he’s mashed together TFA and Rogue One in his mind.

He also believes the next film is the final one. This he knows because it has the word “last” in the title.

He’s amazed more people haven’t figured this whole thing out. As for me, I’m just amazed.

“Reeker” (2005)

A neat little slasher mystery tinged with humour that had me confused throughout until the final few minutes made sense of it all and instantly made me want to go back and rewatch it. A low budget means visual effects are used sparingly and the atmosphere benefits from it - but what we do get is a great blend of practical and CG.

Great cast of vaguely familiar actors and you also get Michael Ironside too (bless his heart, even when he’s smiling and playing a good guy he’s still terrifying!)

I had a look and there’s some sequels to this. I shall not be partaking though, this is perfect as it is and there’s no need to do anything more with this story.

Does exactly what it’s supposed to and does it well. I give it 4 half-a-trucker’s out of 5.

From the end credits:

“Filmed, against all odds, in the rapidly decaying movie making capital of the world. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, U.S.A.”

“If you’re a film reviewer and you’re uninspired enough to use the phrase ‘this movie stinks’ or any other lame pun/riff on the title - ha ha ha.”
