Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Lord Haseo said:

I have no problem with him taking inspiration from other films like Lucas did (with the exception of Dam Busters which he completely stole from) but it’s how he implements the inspiration that is cause for concern. Also I’m curious, what makes you think Episode IX couldn’t be even better than VIII?

Just an intution. I have seen Looper and people I trust praised Rian’s 3 episodes job on Breaking Bad (still have not watched this tvseries). And I’ve seen Jurassic World, which is a total mess. Usually, good cineasts make good movies, and bad filmmakers/yesmen make bad ones.

Haven’t seen Dam Busters, put it right away on my “to watch” list.

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)
Time

Don’t need that, his text is sufficient (and here as well: https://humaniterations.net/2016/03/26/how-to-fix-the-force-awakens/)

How does this restructuring help the film?

• The second act centers around the events of Maz’s castle and remains focused on the characters and their struggle to keep the First Order from finding the map to Luke. The First Order catching up to Han and Rey is sufficient motivation for Finn to decide not to leave, without the Hosnian system being destroyed.
• Starkiller Base firing upon the Hosnian system in the third act links it very closely to Kylo Ren’s resolution toward the dark side as he kills Han. Pairing these events magnifies each.
• Han taking a risk motivated by love for his son which brings about costly failure is a dark mirror of Vader doing the same in Return of the Jedi and ending up helping to save the galaxy.
• It alleviates the plot’s very close parallel with the original Star Wars.
• Starkiller Base is depicted as functioning in an intuitive way: it drains the nearby star (or “the Sun,” as Finn describes it), which covers it in darkness, and then fires on the Republic Capitol. Gone are the awkward questions about why the planet was still in daylight when it fired the first time during the second act, and whether the base is mobile.
• It avoids depicting the Hosnian system clearly visible to the naked eye, very large in the sky, from lightyears away. The official Lucasfilm canon answer is that Starkiller Base created a “space-time disruption,” an obvious bandaid answer to apologize for a wanton move on the filmmakers’ part. One wonders whether such intersystem spectacles are common in this world, because no one who witnessed the destruction had the slightest trouble identifying what was happening.
• It avoids raising the question of why the Resistance did not begin evacuating their base during the third act when they know they are the target. In the original Star Wars, the Death Star was looming overhead; here, there’s no obvious reason why they could not have fled.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

As a matter of fact, recycling from other films than from the OT itself is a very smart move. It seems the all rehash issue thing is something pro-TFA don’t quite understand (even people who love TFA have just released the first fan edit version that tries to partly correct that, so I guess within a few years it will be accepted by everyone that TFA is a rehash).

Lucas recycled things from japanese cinema and westerns (among other things); JJ Abrams recycled things from… the OT and… shots from his own films (shots already seen in his Star Trek flicks, in MI3, in Super 8, etc. Shots we will re-use in his next movies, no matter the topic, the franchise, the story…). Ryan Johnson is a competent and intelligent cineast (as opposed to just a “competent filmmaker”), so this is hardly a surprise that he’s got enough culture and references to feed his own take on the saga; even if some internal flaws and producers directions (like massive OT references) might still be problematic, I’m pretty confident that EpVIII is gonna be a far more interesting movie than TFA… and probably the only interesting piece of the ST. Good film, not sure, but interesting, yeah. Remember Looper ? Not that great, but fascinating movie, fueled with asian references (Akira being the most obvious). I wouldn’t say the same about Jurassic World's director…

Ok now I get it: a trilogy box set with TFA-3D could only mean one thing: the prequel trilogy in glorious 3D is to be in the set… The alleged “OT restoration” John Landis was talking about might have been a 3D conversion of the 2011 SE.

Yeah, GL told Landis that LF was going to release the OT SE in 3D, and Landis, who everyone knows is a complete and utter moron, mistook the 3D SE for the OUT, but what GL really meant was the 3D PT. Thanks for clearing this all up, Malá!

You’re welcome. Or second hand info from second hand source which has never been confirmed over a year might not be the most reliable thing we can get, who knows ? A magic OOT box set can still be available for Christmas, or the next… or the next… Maybe when (just a few days ago) I stated that a box set of the OOT with TFA included was non sense and weird I… was… right ? So “3D” would be the only reason/label for a box. Maybe all theories of “JJ only watches Harmy’s version with his kids” were, like I said, totally irrelevant. Nobody knows… I still hope i’ll be surprised by LF some day. A very welcome surprise, a huge surprise nonetheless… (let’s hope Landis has provided us with solid info).

By the way the PT was already converted in 3D before GL sold LF.

On another note, if LF is indeed cooperating with 20th C. Fox for release like this, that would put all the “no way LF would release the OUT b/c Fox still owns the rights” chatter (which I always thought was bullshit), to rest.

I’ve never read anything about Fox blocking the release of the OUT, only about LF/GL blocking it. Has the Library of Congress got its archival copy since GL sold LF ? If you know something, please, share the information…

It’s only a minor detail, but of it’s dvd then it’s not 1080p for the “main feature” (720p ?). And it’s 640 kbps, not 540 I think.

Another thing: the spin (is it how it’s called ?) displays a 3 lines title, which is quite heavy. What about using the same style that was used for the 2001/2006 dvd release ? (with/without the episode number)

Ok, just using paint to roughly show you what I have in mind (it’s not at all polished, it’s just an alternative idea based on your cover):

Rogue One * Spoilers * Thread

Thanks for the pics ! Darth always looks awesome, and I tend to easily forgive minors inconsistencies from one movie to another, but not continuity issues within the same movie. So I don’t mind if the outfit in not an exact recreation of the one he wore in ANH, if it captures the same “spirit” it might do the trick. The Imperial part being the only one i’m pretty confident about for Rogue one.

So if lightning hitting the emperor deforms him...

Palpatine is hit by lightning that is reflected back by Mace’s saber. I think that might have something to do with it rather than something inherant to the lightning. Also, other than Ian being not a thin in the PT as he was in ROTJ, the ROTS makeup is pretty close to the ROTJ makeup, just done differently. It is just very hard to see anything other than his face in ROTJ, but there are occasional glimpses under the hood, enough to be sure the freaky forehead is there in ROTJ.

The make-up being not exactly the same is not really an issue (I know most fans despise this make-up but I don’t) since there is a 24 years gap between ROTS and ROTJ. The photography is not the same as well (in ROTS he’s in plain light half of the time). Only his “new” appearance in TESB is a problem (it’s only two shots, not the worst SE change to date).

lol, yes, yes. I removed Threepio’s line, “It is very doubtful that R2 would have the rest of the map in his backup data.” What’s the other change?

The Stormtroopers “nazi/roman/fascist salute” at the end of Hux speech. Unless you’ve (re)put it back ?

edit: this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPhHl2DpD4E#t=1m01s

(well, it does count as “SKB subplot” related removal)

It’s so silly. Palpatine ought to have looked in Sith like he did in Clones, and vice versa. That way it would be more believable that he looks the way he does in Jedi.

Indeed. Palpy looks older in AOTC than he does in ROTS. I guess the “lightning deformation” is something Lucas improvised when he wrote/shot ROTS, because he obviously had the primary idea that Palpy was just very old in ROTJ.

It’s common knowledge around…

Ok ok, common knowledge… but it’s not at all what I was talking about: Lucas is not involved with the new SW movies/creations past 2012 (but everything done since then is a massive reuse of his material for the OT and even for the PT era… anyway…), we all know that. But what about his rights to everything else before (I-VI + TCW) ? If in the Disney contract there is a line about “never release a HD version of the OOT”, it’s not relevant that Disney and Lucas aren’t friends (which is still debatable. The guy was invited during Rogue One shooting… a movie massively based on a movie he directed/wrote/produced 40 years ago…) because there is something called “rights”, “intellectual property”, etc. You know, the law… This really is the bottom line. So I get there is a 2020 limit for Fox to release SW movies (I to VI). A HD version of the OOT can only happen if Lucas says “well, ok, do it”, because I think (but I’m not sure, that’s why I was asking for reliable sources, not “common knowledge”…) that he is still the owner of SW I-VI (Fox being half the owner of IV) even if he sold his company. Am I wrong ? Maybe… but is there a text/source to support that I’m wrong ? If there is, I would love to read it, so thanks in advance !

And yes, TCW is Lucas tv series. He never wrote or directed a single episode but he was behind every decision made. That’s why half the series really does suck while the other half is very good.

It’s only a snippet, but adywan has just confirmed on the Revisited FB page that he’s modelling his new WAMPA on the ‘puppet’ version that attacks Luke near the start of ‘ESB’…and NOT the ‘Special Edition’ one. (Yay!)

What’s the issue with the SE Wampa ? I’ve never noticed something wrong between the original and the SE version (there is only one close up in the original version).

Rumors, speculations such as these are all we have. Nobody really knows. Lucas sold Lucasfilm, does it mean he also sold his rights of the movies ? Does anyone here (Density ?) has a reliable source about that ? You think Disney-Lucasfilm could make alterations to the PT/OT without his blessing ? Disney does not give a shit about Lucas but they have reused TCW story elements in Rebels (and they were praised for doing so), while using a TCW character in Rogue One… It’s not that simple. Again, a source is very much welcome. A IV-VII box set does not make sense if they use it to release the OOT. If the OOT was to be released, VII/Rogue One wouldn’t be in the set, except in a “full saga” set. We will see…

edit: I wonder if there could be a misunderstanding with the rumor: TFA is scheduled in its 3D version for christmas 2016 since its “single” release a few mothns ago. So it could be that we’ll get for christmas a OOT box set AND TFA-3D, and maybe a few box sets of both. Would be better (I have zero interest for TFA-3D).

The curious thing about this rumored box set is that VII will be included. If a “simple” new box set of the OT was annonced I would really think “the unaltered versions, finally!”, but with VII included I highly doubt that (I bet next year we’ll get a new box set with ROTS-RO-ANH…). The fact JJ showed the OOT to his kids is not quite relevant (the guy is not Lucasfilm). I’m afraid the only one who can decide it is Lucas himself. Disney/Lucasfilm is trying to rehabiliate the guy (through Rebels and Rogue One for instance), they wouldn’t release the OOT behind his back (pretty sure the contract signed in 2012 was clear about that). Besides Lucas didn’t really like TFA, so I wouldn’t hope the OOT release to be accompanied by this last entry.
