It’s a Jedi trap !
Also, I just realized this morning that because TLJ picks up right after TFA
What about Hux new look ? It seems as if a few weeks happened between both movies… but I know you’re right: if SKB is destroyed at Day-0, Rey finds Luke on his (not so) lonely island at Day-1, while the FO attacks the Resistance Base.
(by the way I loved the badass old dude FO officer: who was the actor I’m sure I know him from somewhere ?)

he is definitely the best Yoda on-screen since the OT.
The PT CGI model is very good. So the best Yoda since the OT is in ROTS.
“Major”…
MalàStrana Despecialized Posts 😄
(oh I’ve just edited my message to correct a few grammar mistakes 😃 you were too quick !)
Haven’t read all the other good ideas yet but here’s what I’d do if I had some mad motivation to turn this into a watchable movie:
- Let the attack on the dreadnought (correct spelling?) be a success and not require the sacrifice of Asian girl #1.
- Let Lea die. Let Kylo kill her.
- Let her successor be a traitor. (and maybe instead let that young pilot do the kamikaze?)
- Let Luke die in the first laser blasts. No fancy speeches.
- Do something about Snoke’s death because it is preposterous and illogical.
- Remove Rey beating Luke.
- Let Chewie eat that thing.
- Reduce Luke’s whining
- Get rid of force ghosts blowing up stuff. (Yoda says “Those we teach shall surpass us” but he far surpasses Luke even in his death, so what’s the point? Besides, it’s pointless anyway.)
- Stop Asian girl #2 from bullying Finn.
- Let the resistance be rotted out almost completely.
- Overall reduce grrrrl pwr.
- Let Kylo defeat his enemies on his own in the throne room.
- Do something about the end of Kylo’s and Rey’s confrontation. Maybe let him let her get away, in an act of mercy or something?
- Remove Kylo being bossed around by that Imperial dude (what does he possibly have on him anyway?)
Of course this would completely break continuity with IX. But oh well.
Man, you’re removing all the best stuff.
I agree (except for “Let Chewie eat that thing”, “Stop Asian girl #2 from bullying Finn” and the terrible Yoda scene). All of that gives TLJ its personality. As if some of you wished for another total rehash à la TFA… (at last we have a SW movie with new - and good - ideas !).
- Let the attack on the dreadnought (correct spelling?) be a success and not require the sacrifice of Asian girl #1.
?
One of the best scenes… seriously, in only a few shots Rian Johnson made me care about this unknown character and he gave her “live or die on this day” moment a moody and epic feeling that’s quite scarce in SW (and especially never seen in the Disney movies). You don’t make a movie better by removing this kind of great cinematic moment !
I would be in favor of only removing 90% of the humor, just keeping the funny bits.
Is there a repeated Poe shot? The one that he looks over to the hole in the oscillator. Is that the same one used for when he’s looking at the Starkiller’s laser?
I think so.
Originally I had used the shot of the female pilot reacting to an explosion (which I think fits better), but I suppose it was too obvious a repeat if the original scene was going to be played verbatim. I think some editing could be done to put her reaction back in the Starkiller firing and simply remove that reaction from the original scene.
I think if you add some Starkiller laser glow it shouldn’t be a problem.
I did that when I worked on the slow motion effect for that part, so the shot isn’t identical in color, at least.
Would flipping the shots be a possibility ? (I noticed the re-use of those shots as well)
One last nitpick: when the weapon is charged, the cropped Hux shot should be cropped a little bit more if possible.
I’ve watched the edit 2.0 with my family and they didn’t notice it was a fanedit (although they knew it was). So guys, again congrats for that impressively seamless job !
HERE BEGINS 2 SLIGHT SPOILERS ABOUT EPISODE VIII
I REPEAT : HERE BEGINS 2 SLIGHT SPOILERS ABOUT EPISODE VIII
With TLJ on every screen now, it seems that a few elements of TFA might be slighly inconsistent with its sequel:
Maz:
Whomever you’re waiting for on Jakku… they’re never coming back. = > ok with that
But… there’s someone who still could => hum… should be removed ?
Snoke:
Leave the base at once and come to me with Kylo Ren. => ok with that
It is time…to complete his training. => hum… is there any relevance to TLJ in this sentence (is Kylo completing any training in VIII ?)
(it’s nitpicking I know. I still think the last Snoke scene, which doesn’t have anything to add especially with Ep VIII, should even be removed entirely. In another edit I guess 😃)
END OF SPOILERS
There was nothing as bad as Chewbacca’s Tarzan yell in Rogue One.
I don’t like it either (I’ve removed it from the ROTJ edit I watch) but in R1 you’ve got the “Oh, is that your feet ?” that I find as bad for example. K on the other hand tries as hard as he can to save R1 from complete boredom (nice effort !).

why can’t BB-8 operate a scout walker?
I was a very weird Rick and Morty reference ! (“I’m scout walker BB-8888888888888888” 😃). The kind of Deus Ex Machina I didn’t like. Very silly (like most of the subplots).
and it makes TFA stronger because of it.
I don’t think it does. RJ is trying to “fix” TFA most of the time in TLJ so I don’t get why TFA would end up being stronger thanks to him. TLJ really tries something, it’s a real movie, not the most expensive fan film ever.
The more I think about it: TLJ >>>>> TFA
(then TLJ might rank #5 for me - after the OT and ROTS -… but the bad humor tempers my will to like it 😦 )
Hating a movie for being too fun is such a strange idea. I sure as hell would rather Star Wars resemble the Marvel movies than the joyless DC ones.
Who said anything about hating a movie ? I certainly don’t hate TLJ and its strong qualities might overcome its weakness, but if I always welcome humor in a movie, I don’t like when this humor overlaps dramatic moments (*) and I really don’t like when it’s just… not funny 😦
(* ANH is fun but you won’t find any joke when Ben is killed for example, the balance of humor in ANH/TESB is perfect; in ROTJ it’s less good but it still works; in PT/ST/R1 I just don’t find the humor funny, that’s all, and I don’t hate any of those movies, I even like very much ROTS and I’m still impressed by many TLJ ideas).
I don’t mind the prequels. I actually really like Revenge of the Sith. Also I had never really realised this, but I love the cinematography and look of Attack of the Clones.
I do as well (except the green version on bluray). But AOTC contains some the worst scenes of the Saga but when removed the movie stands as quite good (I still don’t understand the Kamino plot but I think GL didn’t think about it as well so…).
But the books are in the drawler of the Falcon at the end… (what does it mean ? I have no idea… but the entire movie is like that: constantly changing its mind about everything)
(pretty sure Rian Johnson hates JJ Abrams by the way, it’s even obvious)
(all the more reason I wish I loved his take on the saga…)
(removed post from the ranking thread)
I’ll never understand the Marvel joke criticism thing. First of all, what’s wrong with having jokes in your movies? I’d be quickly bored with Marvel movies if they didn’t. Second, just because there’s a lot of humor doesn’t automatically mean it’s the same kind of humor as Marvel tends to do.
Well I feel it is and I never felt this humor was necessary. It’s cool you enjoyed it, wish I did. Some part and ideas are truly beautiful (Johnson can give in ONE SHOT any character their characterization: the man is good !) but the lack of serious - and of consistency as well - of many elements (even within good parts) was playing against the movie (IMHO for sure). I respect TLJ for being radical, daring, and in a way “new” (even if it’s more The Two Towers with a BSG subplot). I just… don’t like it that much. And I really believed I would love it 'cause it’s a very interesting movie nonetheless.
(to all: just stop attacking people because they don’t share your hate of the PT and your love for the Disney movies. Seriously I mean it. Stay cool)
edit: as for the ranking, both AOTC and TLJ are author movies. One might be better than the other one but in the end I don’t like both. I just feel that between a mad artist and an artist getting mad with material which is not his, I would always prefer the work of the mad artist. Bad SW by Lucas is for me more interesting than bad SW by anybody else. But I could switch in my ranking AOTC with TLJ anytime, wouldn’t change anything to me.
removed 'cause spoiler policy
8/9. TFA/TLJ
10. R1Mala never fails to deliver.
You missed the brief moment when she placed TLJ next to AOTC.
Jesus Christ, care to elaborate Mala? I just can’t comprehend how AOTC is a superior film.
I’ll leave it at rest and will rethink about it later in 2018. 10% of TLJ is a stunning and moving movie. 90% of it is a Marvel flick comedy with cynical meta jokes…
1/2. ANH/TESB
3. ROTJ
4. ROTS
5. TPM
6. AOTC
7. TCW
8/9. TFA/TLJ
10. R1

That’s Mala’s opinion mate - and she’s welcome to it - despite seemingly, and somewhat desperately, trying to portray her opinions as some sort of fact.
Oh, dude, come on, be serious 😃 We’re on a forum where some opinions about some movies are considered facts (such as “PT = crap”, “Disney Wars = gold”) and never realy opened for debating. Dare to say that a PT entry is better than any of the new Disney movies and you’ll get a full crowd repeating you “you’re wrong, you cant’ say that, you’re mad, blablabla”.
and yet you spent a fair bit of time in Rogue One fan edit threads on a film that in your opinion with ‘No story, no characters, no emotion, nothing (emptiness at its best)’ and ‘in a few years from now people won’t really watch R1 anymore…’ and even contributed to…
Yeah, fanediting is fun and I welcome and respect any attempt to make a bad movie something better and watchable, especially in the SW universe. Some people managed that with TPM and AOTC, so it’s possible with R1 as well. Besides I really do like most of the faneditors around here that happen to be very cool and interesting people, so if I want to contribute I believe I do whatever I want. Or is it against this forum policy ? Would it be better for you that everyone on this forum thinks this exact same thing about each SW entry (each time an “non” orthodox ranking is published the exact same members eract immediately the exact same way… every fucking time, like some kind of “Thought Police”) ? I’m wondering 'cause I can’t remember when you called Frink’s and others excessive behaviors on this matter trolling as well… (edit: hum… maybe that one time recently but that all I can remember)
(as long as Mala doesn’t carry on repeating this across the site, or is baiting / antagonizing / trolling others with it - especially after being asked to stop doing just that - which I am sure she wouldn’t do…)
Last time I checked I was the one being trolled/provoked every f****** time and you know it, but… anyway 😉
I think your crawl is far too complex and contains too much information (a first time viewer wouldn’t understand half of it, especially in a movie which is a sequel to an episode where everything seemed to be resolved).
This is actually my issue with the original Force Awakens crawl:
Luke Skywalker has vanished.
In his absence, the sinister
FIRST ORDER has risen from
theashes of the Empire and
will not rest until Skywalker,
the last Jedi, has been destroyed. In the first paragraph we are told about Luke Skywalker, the First Order, the Empire, and the Jedi. That’s a lot of information for a first-time viewer, and we are never given any indication of what the Jedi do or why they are so important. But I can understand why we might need to retain the line about the fallen Empire.
Yeah but we know who is Luke, what was the Empire (5 movies prior to this one about the Empire ! Soon 6… 7… 8… etc.) and we are familiar with the Jedi. I’m not a fan of TFA crawl but at least the first paragraph explains why the victory at the end of ROTJ is long forgotten and that some kind of neo Empire is back in business.
(I can’t believe I’m defending something written by JJ Abrams…)
Here’s a version that explains a bit more:
The galaxy is in peril.
Rising from the ashes
of the fallen Empire,
a sinister FIRST ORDER
is building a weapon that
can devour entire stars.
Better ! But I would remove “the galaxy is in peril”.
Without the protection of
the mystical Jedi Knights,
The Republic is blind to this
deadly threat. Only General
Leia Organa, haunted by
visions of impending doom,
mobilizes a small Resistance.
Very complex again, and what you be the payoff of “Leia’s visions” in your cut ?
On a mission to a distant
world, one of her pilots has
found a clue to the location
of Leia’s long-lost brother,
the last of the Jedi Knights
and their only hope against
the forces of darkness…
Seems like you just more or less rephrased the last sentence of the original crawl.
Sorry if I’m nitpicking, writing a crawl is a very difficult exercice (where is Brian de Palma when we need him !).
If you fail to see the story told in ROTS, you’re right to stay away from it 😃
I think the last 10 minutes of Rogue One (minus the last minute) are some of the most rewatchable Star Wars yet.
Yeah 'cause it’s fun but I guess it’s a strong issue that the audience is cheering at Vader slaughtering people… (I like the scene but it’s dumb in the context of this movie; aren’t we supposed to feel empathy for the rebels ?!?).
ROTS is a better movie than R1 at every single level. R1 being more recent has better special effects and Edwards being a competent shooter the movie has a few well made shots. But that’s pretty much it. No story, no characters, no emotion, nothing (emptiness at its best). You’re not the first one I know to rank ROTS higher than R1 (in a few years from now people won’t really watch R1 anymore: it’s half nothing with small bits of EU and half a ROTJ remake with boring characters tha get stupid and repetitive death scenes… so really there is nothing interesting in R1 outside some “star wars porn” shots…).
