Should Poe and Rey meeting for the first time be removed ? As far as I remember they both were only 1 meter away for the other during the “map sequence” of TFA ? This scene in TLJ was… odd… as if Johnson didn’t even bother to watch TFA to be sure or to ask the LFL continuity committee…

Ultimately, I think fan edits of Episode VIII should be postponed until Episode IX comes out.
No TFA fanedit contradicts anything in TLJ. Removing the fat in TLJ is likely to have no consequence on IX.

I haven’t seen Hal’s version but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen more PT edits than anyone, and nothing can be done to any prequel to pull it out of the bottom three.
In fact even ROTS theatrical cut is better than R1 (obviously dead last this one), TLJ (not that bad this one), TFA (fun but pointless), TPM (childish) and AOTC (boring). Period !

It can be done without removing video (just sound alteration, such as Tarzan yell).

Besides the frequently criticized Mace Windu action scene is seen through the eyes of a young boy. It’s indeed not supposed to be realistic but to represent the Jedi as a Legend (something someone else did on a very recent SW flick by the way 😉).
Seems interesting and so far I agree with most of the cuts (I would keep the evil BB-8 subplot though). The title is going to stay the same ? (Legend of the Jedi could be a good title… Legend of the Last Jedi ?).
Kagemusha (produced with the help of… Lucas 😉… yeah you all already know that), Stalker (never seen this one), Daimajin (don’t remember which one, all 3 are awesome and easy to find in bluray), Ran, Goyokin. Mostly japanese influences. We could easily add Akira for the stunning “dead silence” sequence and Lone Wolf and Cub (the second one) for the impressive throne room battle (or maybe another influence, yet it was screaming “Kenji Misumi” for me 😃).
(Kenji Misumi’s Ken and its Kendo philosophy might have influenced the training sequences, but I haven’t seen it in a decade so I’m lacking fresh memories about it)
(and Hayao Miyazaki - Princess Mononoke comes in mind - for the Crait ambiance with the crystal wolves and the FO walkers)

I agree it would emphasize something already quite clear: the Republic has just been destroyed, now they prepare the next step. No time for celebration or else (it’s not as if Hux and Snoke seem to be the friendly kind anyway). Adding a dialogue is a good idea on paper but here it works without it (and for pace even a few more seconds can make a difference). If possible I think the best option would be to add a shot of Hux “smiling” when the Republic is destroyed (into the “destruction montage”) but I don’t know if there is enough material to add such a shot. I like the sequence as it is in v2. It flows well and there is nothing jarring.
Is Hux body going to be more cropped in the “begin charging weapon” shot by the way ?

I won’t rewatch TLJ before a few months, but thinking about it the last 10 days I have a better idea to where I would rank it. The movie has lame and ridiculous ideas in quantity but also very good ones and a sort of fascinating tone.
So (I’ll probably change it again in a few months but for now I’m ok with it):
About the tech guy, the new line is “Weapon fully recharged in 30 seconds” and no longer “Weapon fully reprimed in 30 seconds” ?
But, later Maz tells Rey “Han told [her]” about how she wants to remain on Jakku. The movie just didn’t want us to watch Han tell Maz what we already know.

Me neither (or I just got distracted when I watched the movie !). TLJ has somehow “overlaped” TFA in my mind so I now tend to see “broken” links between both of them whereas there is none (at least for the Rey related lines I though were an issue). So… that’s good ! 😃
I just realized that the (non-) reveal of Rey’s parents begs for more edits to TFA. The one that sticks out to me is Rey and BB-8’s exchange:
“Classified? Me too, big secret.”
Yeah, that line is insulting now. I’m sure other “hints” need to be cut back now too, I’d have to rewatch TFA again though.
I think maybe cut when Han is about to tell Maz who’s the girl and the movie abruptly cuts “not to reveal the mystery”.
This might be a good idea. It probably was the most obvious nod to her being someone special in the Force Awakens.
I agree, there is a need now to cut the following mentions in TFA:
- Kylo’s “What girl ?”
- Maz’s “Who’s the girl ?”
- Kylo’s “The girl I’ve heard so much about” (remove audio only, no need to edit the video. This sentence was already silly before TLJ got released)
Literally none of these need to be cut.
You literally don’t want to cut anything from TFA and TLJ, so you’re not the best advisor about that 😉
Yep, like the ending shot stabilized, and R2 searching its data sooner, and the Falcon going light speed, etc. 😃
