The Last Jedi : a Fan Edit Ideas thread
Time

hmarkv, I would recommend you to edit your post so as to remove the tone (and a very specific word) that could be interpreted as insulting here.

And yeah Rotten Tomatoes is a lame review aggregator that’s got a curious influence these past few years. People shouldn’t read it. Besides, for old movies the reviews are refreshed with new ones, so RT doesn’t even have an “historic” value. For example Blade Runner (the original) is at 90%… it surely wasn’t even at 50% when the movie got released in 1982, so what’s the point of RT ? Basically: none. Even for TPM and AOTC: reviews in 1999 and 2002 were VERY GOOD. It wasn’t 55/66 % (it was higher), more like 75% for both. ROTS was something like 80%. TESB got mixed reviews on the other hand. Pretty sure it wasn’t 97% in 1980…

The idea the Jedi are bad is such revisionist history that all started with the prequels.

“Bad” ? No, but they lost by arrogance and blindness to their own power. In ROTS I really like the part where Mace just wants to kick Palpatine’s ass without any proof besides what Anakin told him. he’s reckless and sure to be on the good side. There also is a TCW episode (season 5 ending I guess) where we can see the view of the population about the war and the Jedi, and they don’t quite like both.

What if IX makes her the Chosen One then ? (but it would go against the “socialist” view of the movie about the Force which belongs to everyone, no-one included). If you think about it, Anakin was one of the most powerful Jedi of the Order but thanks to Obi-Wan restraints he never got too much powerful (TPM and then AOTC deal with that actually) and then he grown mistrust against the Order (TCW/ROTS deal with that as well). Imagine if he had stayed alone a a shitty planet, would he have become like Rey, very powerful in a matter of days ? (not sure) I agree about Rey nonetheless, it has always been my main criticism against TFA (not even bringing the “mary sue” thing; had Rey been a guy mastering so many things on her own in just a few hours, I would have thought the same about the character).

Oh I agree about that, there was some over-the-top “what girl?” moments in TFA (I count 3: 2 by Ren, 1 by Maz), but I would rather removing them in a TFA-Edit than removing the anti-twist of her legacy, which, in fact, means her legacy is the Force, not the Skywalker blood line. What I mean is that in every story of fight of light v darkness (good v evil and so on) every hero needs a nemesis, which is, by definition, his “anti”. What a better way to confront a no-one to the only heir of Skywalker the (“I THOUGHT he was a”) myth guy ? (THOUGHT = I might have been wrong about that… damned…)

PT: Anakin v his own inner fears of losing control/his beloved ones
OT: Luke v his very own father
ST: Rey v her faith in a myth

I agree it might not be handled that well in the movie, but it’s like the PT for me: the result on screen is not satisfying but the intentions are higly interesting (and I’m not going to rant against 2 entries that don’t even try that 😃).

I would not be surprised if you see fan edits of TFA where they edit out a lot of Rey’s parent stuff. I think the Rey’s parent stuff in TFA will feel like a drag on repeated viewings. That’s assuming nothing changes on that in 9.

But knowing she really is “no one” and not a Skywalker/whatever blood relative is one of the strongest ideas of the movie (and RJ takes his time to make that reveal, so in a way it’s quite respectful of the material). By making Rey not-Skywalker, he gives the Saga new horizons (I don’t like the Rey character but this idea is great me-think).

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)
Time

Oh yeah it was just a joke the “restructure” thing for TLJ (I don’t think the structure has any issue). I’m actually more thinking about what’s been done with TPM/AOTC, i.e. removing bad bits so the good things are made better.

(that’s why even if I enjoy TFA: Restructured, I’m still highly interested by your own take on it to reduce the over-the-top humor)

(as well as Nev’s attempt to smoother Rey’s “rise to full Force power”)

Watching TFA again, some lines about Snoke sound ridiculous. Especially Leia talking about Snoke turning Ben.

We can still presume that Luke lied to Leia about that when he left everything behind ?

But Snoke did turn Ben. He had already seduced Ben before Luke’s moment of weakness.

I’ve only seen TLJ once so far, so is it established ? (I really don’t remember when Snoke got into the Luke/Ben equation)

To be honest, I can’t. I had to google it.

Listen to the soundtrack, you’ll know her name ! (and her lovely theme)

(but I think the character sucks… too bad since the death of her sister is a truly powerful moment and I like the necklace thing - which is very Lucas as a matter of fact)

Ranking the Star Wars films

I continue to be amazed that some people HATED this movie so much that they could actually put it last, behind three terribly made movies.

It’s not about “hate”. I don’t even hate R1 as I have explained multiple times; ranking a movie last doesn’t mean you totally hate it… well, maybe some people do really hate the PT but I can understand the feeling that I once shared 😃 TLJ is a complex movie, very familiar and yet new, good and yet bad, impressive and yet lame… it may take a while before people know if they like it or not.

(and I don’t think the PT is terribly made… they still look very good today which wasn’t expected for movies with so many cgi elements)

All I wanna know is where did Threepio’s red arm go?

rewatch TFA

Does TFA explain it? I know he has both his arms golden at the end, but does the movie give us a reason?

TFA doesn’t explain it (not a very good way to reply to someone dahmage…), but on the last shot - when the Falcon leaves the Resistance planet - you can (barely) see 3PO with both his golden arms.
