Rogue One: The Battle of Scarif fan edit (Released)
Time

Too bad 😕 Maybe the OP will at some point try to figure out how to proceed with his former files (if he had kept them).

By the way, I gave a few weeks ago Dustin the subtitles I sync to his edit, but I’m not sure he found time to share them himself on his website, so I take the opportunity to give the link here for anyone interested.

Including french subtitles that are for the most part a complete retranslation of the bluray ones… and of course 100% compliant with the choices made with Hal9000’s edits subtitles (I-III, V, VII-VIII).

TFA: A Gentle Restructure (Released)
Time

Getting it right now.

If not wrong, the new alterations are the following :

As Finn mans the TIE fighter with Poe, trimmed firing upon fellow stormtroopers so soon after planning to escape. Now, he causes peripheral damage to prevent them from firing at him and takes aim at the command center. (Slightly shifted the placement of the film’s trademark Wilhelm scream in order to retain it.)

Removed Kylo Ren identifying Finn’s stormtrooper ID from memory.

Removed Rey saving Finn from the rathtars, cutting from Finn’s line, “They look like that,” to Han and Chewie arriving at the door to the Falcon.

Removed Finn’s comedic line about almost being killed several times by Chewie while tending to him on the Falcon (Mimicked DigModiFicaTion’s approach).

Removed Han shooting a stormtrooper while facing the other way.

Throughout the battle at Maz’s castle, applied a slight sunset color correction to harmonize the sunset lighting present before and afterward.

Cleaned up the smoke and debris around the Starkiller weapon exhaust when the X-Wings approach. (FX by NeverarGreat)

Removed Finn’s comedic moment of misunderstanding Han’s head nod while searching for Rey (Mimicked DigModiFicaTion’s approach).

Chewie has been cropped out of a shot of him walking past Leia. (Crop and image enhancement by Sir Ridley)

Color corrected Ach-to to bring it a little closer to the corresponding scene’s lighting and weather conditions in The Last Jedi.

I agree with all of them, so I won’t stick to v2.1 😃

Things should be synced to the BluRay until the ‘look Sir droids’ scene, then again through MOs Eisley, then through Jabba, then from there until the end. There are very few sync-affecting changes, by quantity.
No particular release date; no rush.

Ok, should be easy then ! I’ll let you know.

Thinking ahead to ROTJ, the biggest hurdle will be the Sarlacc. If I go for the full-on original version, it’ll be tough to get the DeEd or other source to blend well, I imagine.

I’ve probably asked (don’t remember), but are you keeping the burp joke when Boba gets eaten ?

As for the beak, it never bothered me (because of the Dune vibe perhaps ?), and watching this comparaison (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dcLAOcutuxs) I find the animation still good (the texture got a little bit old but since there is no real close up on it, it doesn’t destract), I nevertheless understand why so many hate it (it changes the nature of the Sarlacc).

Removing it while keeping the tentacles would require pathway to many abilities some consider to be… Sir Ridley wizardly 😄

And Mala, I can send you a reference file if you’d like to. That’d save me some trouble for sure, if indeed you are willing to.

I can help. I’m quite busy right now but your cut is going to be very close to NewGuy’s cut so I can manage to do something quickly based on what i’ve already done (depends what’s your release date is for the finished product). I assume you’ve kept a change log of the number of frames removed/added to easily track the synchronisation ?

By the way does Adywan’s regrade correct the saber that turns green aboard the Falcon ?

Forgot to answer that earlier; yes, it does. It’s a right-seeming blue throughout the film.

Oh that’s nice ! I kinda like all the changes that occur after the infamous Jabba scene, except this weird SE alteration that poses continuity issues.

  • The shot of Han cornering troopers down a hallway uses Despecialized, which itself uses GOUT. The 4K77 version of the shot stands out as too obviously from a different source, so this shot isn’t great, but it works for how brief it is.

I’m biased by this SE alteration since for some reason I think it works better than the theatrical version 😄

Anyway, I like the cutlist so far. I’ve been watching Newguy’s version as my reference cut but yours is gonna look less yellow and the choices made seem to be very close. If I end up making subs (probability is high) I’ll let you know of course 😉

You mean you take the Front Right and copy it as a Rear Right channel ? (same with Front Left / Rear Left I guess)

Yep I get you end up creating a 4.0 (even 4.1 if your patient enough to adjust the subwoofer channel to the edit - since it’s the only channel which does not contain music alteration). Why not (not sure I must admit)… but I’ll just wait to be sure eldusto84 doesn’t have his pre-export project files anymore.

If I remember correctly DigMod you also experienced some tech issue with the bluray version of Rise of the Rebellion ?

  1. Soft opening after “A long time ago” (since this is a spin-off film, I feel that not having a crawl was the best choice for this movie. It sets it apart from the saga films and gives it its own identity while still fitting in with the universe. With what I have done with the opening, it emphasized this fact a little more. Having a sharp burst of horns and strings felt, to me, like it was trying to fit with the saga films without blatantly being one, but to me the execution fell flat. By eliminating that, and slowly fading into the opening shot feels more natural.)
  2. Hard cut to Jyn in prison after Saw opens hatch to imply the opening was a dream sequence/past memory
  3. Hard cut from Jyn in prison to new opening titles that mimic what we saw in the trailers. (Again, I feel that the titles for this movie were trying to resemble the crawl without actually having a crawl. By using new title cards, this film starts to feel more like its own entity without deviating from the “Star Wars” formula.)
  4. Cut “Rings of Kafrene” scene. We now meet Cassian when Jyn meets him.

This is very well done. DigMod had the same approach, but he had to trim the very beautiful cue that leads to the Kafrene sequence. By inserting the title here, you solve the problem.

Not sure it can be dealt with fanediting though. Hal is aldready planning to remove the weird “Finn killing troopers” sequence when the Tie takes off. It should lessen this weakness of TFA.

I would however be in favor to get rid of that as well :

💡Less Wohoos! as the pair escape in the Tie fighter would be nice, “Did you see that, DID YOU SEE THAT!”😓

Yeah this line and the “woohoos” are very embarrassing here… (as well as the “Got a boyfriend ?” line 😕)

That’s exactly what I was thinking ! I posted a message on his site about that.

Watched the edit and it’s an improvement over v1. Vader’s lines work perfectly fine, every single Galen Erso reference is seamlessly erased, the wipes are nice, and the musical choices are strong. Only bottom line being the 2.0 (but I’m pretty sure it can be fixed), the video quality in dark areas that is very noisy, and the end credits that could have played a little bit longer to give the music more time to breath.

Anyway, highly recommended for anyone like myself who doesn’t really like the theatrical cut (it’s still a very silly movie but now only action packed, so it’s better and it bears less inconsistencies with ANH). It really does get the job done to bridge the gap between ROTS and ANH with Vader “framing” this side story.

I wasn’t aware of that (so I assume I may not be the only one) but eldusto84 released the bluray version of his fanedit this summer ! Very curious to check it out.

Just too bad about that :

The only bad news is that I was unable to create a 5.1 Surround version of this edit. Adobe Premiere Pro lost the Dolby Digital license, along with any easy or reasonable way to export a surround file that I am aware of. I tried rolling back my version of Premiere but it corrupted my project file, so unfortunately I am stuck. If something develops and I am able to export a 5.1 version of the edit, I will certainly let you all know.

Thanks eldusto84 for taking the time to finish your fanedit 😉
