It's weird, the saga (or OT, heh) is full of amazing action, but the emotinal and dialogue scenes do it for me
Time
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one, but I always find myself selecting the emotional or character scenes when I want to watch not the whole SW film, but just want a taste of it, you know. The scenes where the central themes really shine through. Then I hardly ever choose the action heavy scenes...they move me everytime.

I often wonder if this is one of the major reasons why SW is still so beloved and popular.

Roger Ebert has the best view on Star Wars of any critic I've read
Time
I've enjoyed reading all of his reviews of the star wars films. He has good insight and a 'certain point of view' that you need to compass watching these fantasy, space opera films. He's a big fan of Lucas' visionary sequences, which I agree Lucas really excels in . I even agree with his assessment of The Phantom Menace. And he's truly right in saying that Attack of the clones is the worst SW film. It's the only one out of the series he gave a rotten review.

I don't always agree with him (for eg: I detest his reviews of the original hitcher film and Oliver Stone's U-turn and plenty more), but I often respect him and that is certainly the case with his SW reviews.

Sorry, this is most likely a pretty stupid thing to make a whole topic about, heh. They're worth a read though.

Anyone else here have a love/hate relation with Revenge of the sith ?
Time
Oh yes, I forgot to mention another thing I love about Revenge of the sith. It possibly contains my favorite scene out of the entire saga which the capter listing inside the dvd calls 'Sidious Revealed'. Especially this little dialogue by Palpatine:

"I know you would. I can feel your anger, it gives you focus, makes you STRONGER!"

It always gives me chills. Just the way he seemingly alters his voice and persona.

No, the reasons for not liking Gomer are many, but it has nothing to do with his opinions on things. I think a lot of us respect his opionions well enough, it has a lot more to do with HOW he delivered his opinions.

Well, I was lurking around a bit on theforce boards and came across a post made by Go-mer-tonic about one of the prequels today which reads:

'I don't think anyone ever hated Episode II, and I don't know where anyone got that impression.'

http://boards.theforce.net/prequel_trilogy/b10669/26990414/p55/?818

HAH. I know I shouldn't pay attention to stuff like this, but still =) He's been posting on every star wars forum in internet history and thinks no one hates Attack of the clones?

I just can't embrace it fully, but I also can't disregard it. There's a lot I love, but also a lot that angers me. For example:

LOVE:

- The stunning new planets Utapau and the Wookie planet Kashyyyk

- The roguish interaction between Obi and Ani in the beginning of the film

- The epic opening battle. I think it's breathtaking. Yes, hard to follow, but I guess that's the point since we're following the jedi duo and not the battle.

- Some amazing imagery. Palpatine sitting down next to a burned Anakin on Mustafar after the lightsaber battle, The wookies charging before the big battle, the beautiful planets, Obi with his jedi hoodie on looking up into the sun on Utapau, Anakin beheading Dooku, The jedi temple massacre/march, Palpatine smiling menacly when Darth Vader rises and screams out NO, and I personally love Obiwan riding on that dragon like creature...damn I forgot its name. And many more.

- John William's score off course

- The toning down of the heavy handed politics a bit. Which was nigh on unbearable in the two other prequels.

- I also very much like that Anikan didn't turn to the dark side for a selfish reason, but unfortunately it just didn't play out very well due to the lack of chemistry between Nathalie Portman and Hayden Christensen and the bad script. Lucas had the right idea.

- There were so many interesting fantasy characters in the background, the little guys that fueled up Obi's ship on Utapau, obi's dragon lizard, etc.

- The great performance by Ian McDiarmid in the first half

- And there's more I love, undoubtedly, but I suck at writing long posts, hah.

HATE:

- The idiot script most the time. The insensitive, witless dialogue. FROM MY POINT OF VIEW THE JEDI ARE EVIL blabla ugh

- Unfortunately Palpatine turned into a big cackling buffoon after he got Anakin to turn to the dark side. He could have slowed it down a bit and be more menacing.

- The Yoda vs Darth Sidious and Obi vs Ani lightsaber battle. Just...UGH too much. When you have two characters swinging from ropes and trying to hit each other with lightsabers you know you're doing something wrong.

- Padme. UGH

- The babies being delivered by the most ugly nurse robot of all time. And why a robot. Ok, I can live with that. But why a robot with such a dumb design.

- Still too much heavy handed politics.

- YOUNGLINGS

- And a lot of ETC.

- Too many dumb and up close explosions.

- Mace Windu

I love and hate the film at same time. And I wish I could just love it entirely and let go. Anyone have the same dilema ?

I'll give Episode One something...
Time
If anything, The Phantom Menace is my favorite out of the prequel trilogy, but that really isn't saying much. It is the only that delivers some kind of Star Wars feeling.

Oh, and the 'epic' fight between Anakin and Obi in Revenge of the sith might be the most ridiculous thing I've ever seen. Anyone agree? Especially when they started swinging from ropes! Is there anyone in the world that finds that even remotely cool?! Though, the little scene after that, where Anakin shouts out he hates Obi is actually pretty amazing.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut in the UK!
Time
Lol C3PX!

Yes. It's released earlier in the UK. I think the official release date was today, actually. But some stores don't give a shit and release it whenever it suits them. I guess that's how I got mine here like three days ago in that amsterdam import store!

Same with the transformers 07 dvd. It wasn't supposed to come out till the 13th of december (in holland anyways), but it's already for sale in some stores!

The good news for R2 people I suppose is that you honestly won't have much a desire to watch anything but the Final Cut in the future; there's really nothing but improvements and they are so minor and slight that one might even forget that you are watching a version different from the one you had previously been accustomed to.

Not necessarily true. I know from experience there are many people that enjoy the original, theatrical cut more than the final cut (or director's cut) and will be very happy with disc 3. I for one am one of those people. Primarily because there are no silly, movie and theme-destroying allusions to Deckard being a replicant. Furthermore, I've always been somewhat of a fan of the added V.O track and I think the original ending is great and definately not hollywood like some say. Ridley Scott can't always be right, heh.

What you consider (technical improvements at that) I don't.

To each his own I guess...you hear that Lucas?!

Wow! Twenty days before the official release date, for the states anyway (Dec. 18th). It is interesting, the suggested retail price for the five disc set is $78, while for the 4 disc it is $35. Seems like a lot of money for a tin box and one extra disc. Are they completely different discs? Or is it really just one extra disc and fancy packaging. Regular packaging fits better on the shelf anyway, and one extra disc just doesn't seem worth that much money.

Yeah, I was surprised too, but that's amsterdam for you! Btw, I bought it for 42 euros. I don't know exactly how much dollars that is...

Trust me when I say this. Get the 5-disc box set, not the 4-disc, UNLESS you can really do without the workprint. The description on the little cartoon sleeve that comes with the box says:

Disc 5: Workprint - Rarely seen workprint with alternate music, footage and voice-over. Plus all our variant futures featurette.

Now, I haven't watched the entire workprint yet (don't have the time now), but it really feels different, and I've hear the same from other people who have already seen it. It reminded me quite a bit of Lucas' THX 1138 in the way the sound effects are far more noticable and important, because there's hardly any music from Vangelis in this version. And it's a very interesting way to view the film. I'm sure I'll discover more when I see it in its totallity.

And the art on the discs are really tremendous as are all the things inside the box as well. All 5 discs contain artwork on them from all the important characters: Deckard on disc 1, Rachel on disc 2, Roy on disc 3, Priss on disc 4 and Zhora on disc 5. Very, very atmospheric.

It's also got a lot of neat extra stuff like a 16-page photo and contents booklet, rare art folio featuring works by syd mead and other visionary artists, motion filmclip a letter by ridley scott and signed by ridley scott.

Conclusion: FUCKIN' BUY IT, heh!

Hey dudes,

I'm very happy to say I've bought the 5 disc blade runner tin box in an import store here in amsterdam. They had it early, cause they couldn't wait to sell it, and just went 'fuck it'. It's one of the best dvd sets I've ever had in my hands ( trust me, that's been a lot, heh) and it's got everything you could possibly ever want to know about our favorite (yeah, that's right, favorite!) sci fi film!

Lucas should be fuckin' ashamed with all the poor star wars releases it has put out in the last few years. He can't possibly ignore this beautiful BR boxset. He has to shape up now and release a mega box with all the star wars things you can possibly imagine ( original original trilogy, workprints, deleted scenes, etc etc) don't you all agree?

How did you envision the prequels?
Time
Well, I don't know about you guys, but over the years, now being a little older, wiser, I've learned to appreciate the prequel trilogy a whole lot more than I used to. There's just too much greatness in it to blatantly ignore or scoff at. The OT and PT are two totally different creations (yet, with similar themes and interesting philosophical ideas), accept that and you'll find there's plenty of great stuff to be found in the prequels.

That said, while I'm very fond of The phantom menace and Revenge of the sith now I still can't totally get into Attack of the clones.

The Beginning: Making 'Episode I': A comedy masterpiece
Time
Up there with the best of them: Arsenic and old lace, Ladykillers, The big lebowski, Some like it hot, Bowfinger, SPACEBALLS etc!

Whoever hasn't seen it yet, it's on the 2nd disc of the Phantom Menace dvd. It should have been te 1st ( Nah, I kind of enjoy and like the film so it's all for laughs)! Not even five minutes in, the docu lives up to its comic potential, and trust me there's whole lot more funny in there than just this line from George Lucas.

'JAR JAR IS THE KEY TO ALL THIS. IF WE GET JAR JAR WORKING. CAUSHE HE'S A FUNNIER CHARACTER THAN WE'VE HAD IN THE OTHER MOVIES BEFORE.'

I was laughing my ass off when they were shooting tests for jar jar and some guy was holding a very ugly jar jar puppet moving him about whilst driving in a jeep around the range. I don't know, it just gets to me.

I'll you guys talk about it while I have a loooong day of college ahead of me! =(

Ian McDiarmid's performance in the PT (also the OT) is memorable and absolutely enthralling
Time
Overall, I think the great actors stepped up in their roles, but the problem is the main characters are Lloyd/Portman/Christenson and the bulk of the drama/chemistry comes from them, and that is why the great actors in the cast couldnt save it.

True. But I don't think any woman could have stepped up in the role of Padme with the stupidly embarrassing and uncomfortable dialogue. It would have been C-material, regardless. And I didn't think Christenson was that bad really, just a little uninformed. Christian Bale anyone? lol

Can we at least all agree on that? =D

Cause in my own experience whenever I'm watching the PT or parts of it I'm always looking forward to scenes with Ian McDiarmid as either the chancellor or sith. He definately rises above the given material and creates a character that fascinates endlessly. We can be thankful George Lucas has at least written some pretty to very good dialogue for him to act with! He is very subtle in the first two prequels and in revenge of the sith he really brings all to the table ( is that a good expression? : $)!

'I can feel your anger. It gives you focus. It makes you stronger.'

'Use my knowledge, I beg you.'

'The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.'

'It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself.' ( definately my favorite line he's uttered throughout the entire saga, heh )
