Star Wars - The Edits and DVDr releases thread
Time
Actually the missing eye scene and the Chewie roar are both missing from the first preview prints made. They were changed after that. Because they were preview prints I’m not sure if they would count as missing from the theatrical prints or not. I guess you could be the judge of that. I'll try to find some proof for you but I’m not going to kill myself looking for it....

Finally finished watching the torrent files of Star Wars. I watched those and the TR47 set back to back. I also did some side by side comparisons to really check stuff out. So here it goes.....

In picture quality the TR47 set comes out just a bit on top. Colors look a little better and the entire picture is a bit crisper when compared to the anamorphic set. Both sets seemed a bit soft to me. I wanted to check these against the laserdisc set I used to have but I can’t find those anywhere. I may have sold them. At any rate the laserdiscs may have been just as soft in focus. The Anamorphic set came out a bit weird on the anamorphic too. It seemed to me to be off as far as framing goes. It looked closer to somewhere around 2:00.1 as compared to 2:35.1. This could just be the set I downloaded and not the sets that are floating around here. I'm not sure of that but that is what I got out of it when played on my TV.

Final judgment on video...I would go with either set. As the video goes they both look good. Personally I like the TR47 set better but if you’re that concerned about hitting zoom on your remote just get the anamorphic. The improper framing on my set really wasn't even that big of a deal it was just something I noticed and wanted to point out to people. Again it could just be my set. Oh and yes the “Leia welding scene” IS missing from the anamorphic set.

As far as sound the TR47 set blows away the anamorphic set. It's a no contest here. The TR47 had a better sound stage presence with clean sweeps and pan from channel to channel. The anamorphic set was a bit hollow in its sound and seemed a bit forced to the rear speakers. It was weak when it even did appear in the rear channels, which wasn’t often enough for my liking. With a Prologic II receiver the TR47 set sound really close to a 5.1 mix (or as close as you will get in a bootleg) where as the anamorphic set sounds like a plain old vanilla surround mix that occasionally graces us with some sound out of the rear channels. Not much better than I get out of my VHS set to be honest with you.

As far bonus stuff goes...I should say up front that I hate bonus stuff. I really don't care much for it and never have. Now occasionally something will grab my interest but most of the time it's the same old crap over and over again. I would much rather see a movie only version of everything that just maxes out the sound and video presentation and doesn’t squeeze it onto a disc with bonus stuff. Again this is just my opinion. So with that it would be very unfair for me to judge this stuff. It's really the same on both sets with the exception of the commentary on the anamorphic set. You can all guess what I think of that just from what I wrote above so it's really up to you to decide on weather or not you need a commentary track from what I hear isn’t even a full on commentary track. (No I didn’t even listen to it)

WITH EVERYTHING SAID AND DONE...
The TR47 set was superior in both Video and Audio quality. However the video is only a slight step up from the anamorphic set. The anamorphic set does have the bonus feature of the commentary track but it severely sacrifices sound quality for this little thing. The bonus fourth disc is the same on both but in all honesty I didn't even bother trying to find the fourth disc for the anamorphic set so I’m not really sure if it is the same. Perhaps someone else knows about that.

So what it really comes down to is how well your TV can handle zoom. If you can handle that well or have a DLP/LCD front projector you should probably go with the TR47 set. If bonus stuff really concerns you go with the other set. Both sets are really nice representations of the original Star Wars movies with a few differences in between. The question is how big of a fan boy are you? Do you want one or both? All I know is that I'm really sick of Star Wars now. I have watched way too much of it in the past three days.

I may be the only one but I would love to see a dual layered movie only version of these movies. Granted the bonus stuff is cool and all but aren't we talking about getting the ABSOLUTE BEST picture and sound quality available in order to preserve these movies? In my opinion (Which by some of you may be wrong) is that a movie only dual layered version of the trilogy will be a better goal than a dual layered disc full of crap and decent quality. Do we really want to take the TR47 quality disc and just put that on a new disc with more stuff or do we want a high quality movie that is light years ahead of the past bootlegs?

(Pun intended sorry)

Really if were looking for good bonus stuff for the original trilogy why not just pick up a copy of the new DVD’s in September? At least that will have a real commentary track on it.

I totally forgot to reply to this thread after that night. If it wasn't for wookie posting something here I bet this thread would have just gone away. I think it should anyway.

I didn't hang upside down but I did get drunk and got into a fight with my girlfriend. So that's pretty much what happens whenever we go out. Sorry to let you all down but I did wake up.

Printing Star Wars DVD covers
Time
You know I just have a cheap old Lexmark printer that I got for 50 bux from Best Buy and I just got the highest quality Photo Paper I could from Office Max and they turned out awesome. I used the art from the TR47 set. Changed that a bit in photo shop and then cranked up the resolution settings on my printer. They took some time to do but they look great. A lot of the blacks on that art work weren't rich enough for my liking so I changed that and chanced the color of the Logo to a more golden color. They look awsome.

Well you’re not wrong or right. I think all he was saying is that he is mixing up his mix from a 2.0 source much the same way the sound team at Lucasfilms mixed up theirs. But I honestly don't care about all that.

Here is the info I promised you. It's taken from www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html about 1/4 the way down the page

“Also, we've heard a reader who recently had the chance to talk with Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt about the upcoming DVD release. Here's the info (special thanks to our reader for sending this in):

I spoke with Ben Burtt recently. He mentioned the upcoming Star Wars DVDs. It seems that they were able to go back and digitize all of the original tracks and rebuild the show from scratch. For the previous Theatrical Special Editions they were only able to go back and re-mix and edit from the pre-mixes which were sonically limited by the analogue recording and reproduction systems of the time. Since Ben was responsible for archiving all of the sound on A New Hope, all of the sounds were able to be found except for a couple of foley tracks which I'm assuming will be re-done. So it seems that we will be hearing Star Wars in a way we've never heard it before. He did not mention if Empire and Jedi would be receiving the same treatment.”

Can you imagine how good the new soundtrack will sound if this info is correct. DAMN!

Sorry digitalfreak but your wrong. Well not wrong, just not correctly understanding what he is say is all. You see the 97 SE LD and Theatrical mix was 5.1. There you are right, but it was mixed up to a 5.1 mix from all analog sources. So there he is right.

Get that both right.

5.1 yes.
Mixed into 5.1 from analog masters.

What he is also saying is that the new DVD's will be the first time that the movie will be mixed into 5.1 from Digital Sources. That sound guy went and put all the old stuff onto a puter or something like that. I'll try to find the article about it for you.

So yes the 97 versions were 5.1 mixes but they weren't digital 5.1 mixes. A simple miss understanding. But damn they sounded good didn't they?

Can Luke wake up?
Time
I was just watching Empire and I realized something strange. People may have noticed this but it's the first time it occurred to me. At the beginning when Luke is hanging up side down and he wakes up. Can he really wake up that way?

Here is what I'm thinking. If enough blood rushes to your head you can pass out. (I could be wrong) Luke was knocked unconscious before he was hung upside down. Now with all the blood rushing to his head while unconscious like that, is it possible to regain consciousness from that position?

I don't know, I'm not a doctor. Any thoughts on this matter?

You know what really sucks about Star Wars video games. Most of them start you off as a chump with no force powers. I'm playing the game to kick some ass with choke holds and lightning attacks. Most of the Star Wars games suck until you get either your force powers or a lightsaber. All I want is a game where I start off as a bad ass jedi with a cool lightsaber.

That or a racing game where I get to race a speederbike. Pod Racer for the 64 was cool but speederbikes are cooler.

Well I’ve seen the TR47 Star Wars DVD’s. They really are pretty damn good. In fact out of the four sets I have seen they are the best yet. The picture is really good. I played them on my 57” Widescreen and they looked a bit soft at parts but on the smaller 36” TV they looked just fine. Don’t get me wrong the movies look awesome in their 57” HD glory. All the dirt and scratches on the image are obviously from the Laserdisc they were taken from. That would account for the soft parts too. I compared the DVD set and my Definitive Edition Laserdiscs and they are about spot dead on. If you really, really, really look hard you can find MINISCULE differences. But it’s nothing that you would even start to notice on a low end screen (or if you didn’t have a bunch of free time to actually look for them). Now that I think about it I should go check out the soft parts. I bet money they are on the Laserdiscs too.

As for sound it was the first time I had watched a bootleg set not in 5.1 and let me tell you this is the best sounding set I have ever run through my system. The Three other sets were all in 5.1, yes, but it was a mixed up version from a 2.0 source. So what you get from that is sound the wraps around you but sounds very flat once it gets past the front sound stage. I ran this through a Dolby Prologic II receiver and the sound really defused nicely to the rear sound stage. It sounded great. I would be will to take a leap and say it’s the best sounding the Original Trilogy will even sound. Of course I say this assuming that George Lucas will never release these on DVD.

The set has the three movies on three discs all with no menus to eat up space for the movie. They also have quite a few chapters for the ease of navigating the movie. The set also came with a bonus disc with a bunch of boring crap that I fell asleep watching and a fifth disc with files for printing out your own case covers, inlays, and disc covers. That was a very nice touch and something that is greatly appreciated.

My only complaint with this is that it isn’t in Anamorphic Widescreen as I thought it was. Don’t get me wrong this is the best widescreen transfer I have ever seen of these movies but it’s not anamorphic. That is of course easily fixable with the zoom feature on your TV. The movies are (For the first time I know of in bootleg form) actually presented in its true 2.35:1 ratio. I have seen anamorphic DVDs of these movies that actually crop the movie to around 1.75:1 which also cuts off all the subtitles. So I’m more than happy with this non anamorphic set. Of course if you don’t have a 16:9 TV you don’t give a damn about that. But I do so there.

In closing I would say this is as good as it gets for now. To quote Darth Vader…

You guys crack my $hit up. Your spending hours and hours of your life trying to get these Torrent files to download when you could have just dropped 30 bux for the TR47 discs and been done with it.

I've said it before and I’ll say it again. Star Wars fans are nuts, I know because I'm one of them. It never fails to amaze me how much people will pay for these movies. I put up a set of Pre SE DVD+R's on EBay and only Star Wars worked. Jedi and Empire were so scratched up that you couldn't get them to play more than 15 minutes into the movies. And that was after I had them resurfaced. So they bought two coasters and a copy of Star Wars. I got 85 bux for the set and positive feedback.

Go figure.

Good luck to you crazy kids.

P.S. To TR47
Thanks for the great set of movies.

MORE CHANGES!!! (for the 2004 OT DVD release)

I guess they are changing the Jabba scene. It's all just rumor right now so don't get all excited. What they are doing is making the digital model better. Actually head over to digital bits for the full read.

http://www.thedigitalbits.com/rumormill.html

they're changing a bunch of stuf it sounds like.

Sorry if the hyper link doesn't work. I have never posted one of those here.
