Space Shuttle
Time
Yeah Freon isn't banned at all. It is just not available like it used to be. You can't go into a store and buy Freon like you could in the old days. Now you have to take your car in to the shop and have them pump the Freon into your cars A/C. (Special note you used to be able to huff Freon and get really high)

Anyway the space shuttle did quite using Freon because of budget cuts and not because of environmental reasons. The problem with Freon was that it would be handled poorly and that would lead to ozone depletion. It didn't have anything to do with the gas itself. If you go to fill up your car with Freon and spill half of it then you kill the ozone. If you do it right you don't have a problem. To help solve this they stopped the sale of it the public.

You actually might be able to still get it but it comes in special containers now so you can't spill it into the air. I'm not positive about that though. But I do know that mechanics and people who work on heating and air conditioning can still get it.

THX Ultimate Demo Disc

I understand you thinking that THX Ultra 2 is such a gold standard. Then why is the B&K AVR307 A/V Receiver, arguably one of the better high end receivers out there, not THX Ultra 2 certified? In fact there quite a few high end receivers that aren't THX certified.

Rikter - Any input? What does it actually take to be certified THX? Why isn't true top of the line stuff THX cerfified? (I'm talking the 20,000 bux stuff)

Exactly the can of worms I wanted to open

Obi-wonton and Rikter both make good points. I think I actually fell a little short of what I wanted to say originally and I thank both of you for pointing that out. Let me try to be a little less monosyllabic.

First and foremost I understand that THX is not a sound format. I just wanted to get that out there.

What I was trying to say with the varying degrees of THX was that to the average consumer they will not know the difference between a “Select” setup and an “Ultra” setup. With that in mind I think that THX really messed up by introducing these nomenclatures. Of course to the audiophiles the THX naming system is very simple. But to an uneducated Best Buy shopper it’s just another bell or whistle that they can say they have. When in all actuality it isn’t a bell or a whistle at all. They just have a certified piece of equipment.

I guess what would have made me happy is instead of having THX on everything and then having a “Select” or “whatever” after it I would have been happier if they had come out with another name altogether. Now, I know, I know I’m just being nit picky but I have talked to way to many people who go to show me their set up and then tell me, “Oh it has THX sound too.” NO IT DOESN’T! If THX hadn’t added the different levels of THX I wouldn’t have to hear that again. When it was just THX, people who wanted to get into home theatre couldn’t afford a THX certified piece of equipment.

In the end I’m just mad I guess. It’s good because now people who couldn’t afford THX equipment in the past can. To me it’s bad because I have to hear stupid uneducated things about THX every time I’m in Best Buy picking up a DVD.

Does this make my last post make sense? Who cares it’s 8 in the morning…

I'm going to come right out and say this but I fell it is necessary at this point in time.

I think THX is a useless system now.

Ok I said it. Now let me explain that a little bit. Back in the day when I was buying my first home Receiver (in Dolby Surround) I couldn't afford the top of the line THX receivers (also in Dolby Surround). They were a pipe dream that us budget audiophiles could only dream of back then. As time went by I got older and made a lot more money. I could finally afford this certified piece of audio goodness. Then a few years back THX decided that it wasn't going to stand for the best stuff anymore. It was now going to have degrees of THX. Suddenly in my mind THX meant a whole heck of a lot less. It was like they came out and said "this receiver is good but not as good as this one. Then with that one it's not as good as this ultra one over here."

It just seemed like a way to slap a brand name on a bunch of stuff that wasn't up to spec. If it is up to the THX standard say so. If it isn't don't. I mean why have a "THX select?" Just because it meets a few standards for good audio. I want something that meets all of them. Of course this is one of those audio things that can be debated till the cows come home. So I digress.

As for receiver advice, or home audio advice for that matter. Buy some good equipment and then stop looking at other audio stuff. You will only end up finding something else that is better and more expensive to spend your money on.

Where do you get a THX disc?

Did you have to pay money for it?

Not that I'm putting it down but I don't think I'd ever want to pay money for something like that when I can buy a kick ass movie for a demo.

I personally use "The Fast and the Furious." I know this movie isn't cool, in fact it sucks ass, but it's DTS track is great. And I didn't have to pay for it. My brother gave it to me.

Damn 52 emails!!! Now I feel bad for emailing you. Sorry man.

Anyway great looking out there JohnnyRay. It's always nice to see a new edit enter the race to win fans hearts. I think no matter what you cut out of these movies there will always be someone standing around saying something like, that is cool but it would be better if this or that was gone.

Long live the fan-edit

What about you? The moment when you "divorced" from the Lucas policy about SW?
Time
When the 97 SE came out I was pissed. Then the prequels came out and I didn't really like them either. When the 2004 DVD's came out I just seemed to not care anymore. I kinda liked star wars again. For the first time sense 97 I was happy just to be watching star wars again.

So I don't think I really care either way any more. Don't get me wrong though. I would love to see the OT on DVD rather than what we got but I'm just as happy these days to watch either.

Breakfast

Yeah soap is a big no no. I had a friend of mine do that and man was it nasty after that. Everything he cooked on it was horrible. When I'm doing a frozen pizza I have this really great pan I use. For some reason it just cooks them better than the stone. What I do is cook them on that pan with the stone in the oven. Then I pull out the stone and place that on top of the stove. I then pull out the pizza and put the pizza on the now warm stone. It keeps the pizza warm when it's out of the oven.

Damn I need food.

Just one more reason for me to sell everything I own and go live in the woods somewhere.

My jaw was on the floor after reading this ruling and I know the ramifications of it will be felt everywhere. The really sad part is that things like this happen in the government everyday and most people don't even know about them. Perhaps not as big as this one but things are always being past that mess with your liberties.

Aww a pizza stone kicks ass for reheating pizza. I don't really like it when you use it for frozen pizza. It just cooks weird for me, it could be my stone. Anyway I like it.

The woman got a great one from a Pampered Chief party. Actually she got a ton of stuff. It's like a tupperware party but with cooking stuff.

Anyway if you can get one of those I like them the best.

Cold pizza is good too.

This is a bit weird to post here but what the hell.

I was hanging out with my little cousin today and he wanted cinnamon toast. So I make him some. As can be expected with little kids they don't eat a lot and you always get left with leftovers. So I ate the left over cinnamon toast.

Damn it was good. I hadn't had cinnamon toast sense I was like 9 years old. I forgot how good it was.

That got me wondering. What else is good breakfast food that you haven't had in years? Is it still good today?

Yeah I just went here...

http://www.horrordvds.com/reviews/a-m/frighteners-ld/

and picked up the orginal Laserdisc art. I then moved some stuff around, cut some stuff out and added a DVD Video Logo and made a spine for it with heal brush and clone stamp. I then just shrunk the whole thing down to fit DVD cases. I did nothing special with this and I didn't even try to avoid squeezing anything thing.

Well I was just tinkering around with some images I found online of the laserdisc scans. I found some decent scans of the laserdisc cover so I threw this DVD cover together for it. If for whatever reason my bandwidth gets used up (and it will) just PM me and i'll email this to you.

Info Wanted: Preservation and Fan Edit options - and a review thread?
Time

If there is already a thread like this I’m sorry. This whole “Preservation and Fan Edit” section is a bit mind boggling to me now days. It seems like everyone and their brother are doing some sort of project. I remember back when we only had two possible options for a good copy of the OT (Dr. Gonzo and TR47). Now it’s a bit crazy with all the great options. And I do mean great. It seems like with each new generation of discs the quality just keeps getting better.

I know that there are a few great threads about what is going on with the current projects and that is awesome to find such community support. My question is what if there was a section where you can get reviews of all the currently finished and available projects? I’m sure more than a few people would like to know which set is currently the best quality OT, PT, or Fan Edit.

Now before this post become a pissing contest about who’s set is better I was wondering if we could get an impartial person to step up and take a look at the majority of the sets. Kind of like a Roger Ebert of Star Wars preservation.

Perhaps if we find someone to do that we could start a new thread where only the reviews for each set could reside. Not to discourage community involvement with those reviews but if we don’t have any replies in that sections we would very quickly end up with a single area where people could come and make educated decisions about which set of discs is right for them.

Perhaps I’m just too damn idealistic but I think it could be a great addition to this forum. For all I know there could be a website with this very information already on it?
