Aliens (1986)

In terms of pure entertainment, this is an easy 10/10, and it remains one of my favourite movies to watch . . . 7/10

This is why I don’t rate movies. If it’s one of your favorite films to watch, then why give it a lower rating for the sake of complaints that clearly don’t hinder your enjoyment of the movie?

Because I’m rating the movie in terms of quality, not enjoyment.

Aliens (1986)

In terms of pure entertainment, this is an easy 10/10, and it remains one of my favourite movies to watch. The characters are all fun, even though a lot of them are stereotypes and not particularly well developed. The action is awesome, and is accompanied by excellent practical effects and costumes. Ripley is very well fleshed out here and Sigourney Weaver gets plenty of time to shine. The music is excellent, as always with James Horner, and the direction is great. The story is a little muddy and there are some plot holes however, and my least favourite thing about the film is how the Xenomorphs, portrayed as a intelligent and thoughtful creature in the first film, are downgraded to stupid beasts in this film, which means that you never really fear for the characters safety. Anyway, this film is tons of fun, and one of my favourite films, if not quite one of the best ones I’ve seen.

Suicide Squad 7/10

Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed this film but it is NOT flawless. Here are my quick thoughts:

  • The first 20 minutes were edited very poorly, many scenes that should have been way longer ended up being chopped to shit while other scenes were way too long

  • The tone was all over the place

  • The reshoots were really obvious

  • There were many things cut from the movie that either felt missing or ended up in the trailer

  • The villain was really lame

  • Joker was really good but he was very underused

  • The soundtrack was really fun but more action scenes should have stuck with the random mix rather than generic action music

  • Deadshot and Harley Quinn were great and the rest of the squad was good except for generic-sword-wielding-girl who made no difference to anything

  • The flashbacks were all too choppy and short. Batman’s cameo was awkward and so was Flash’s.

Overall I enjoyed the hell out of it but it wasn’t great. The performances and dialogue in act 2 were really good but act 1 and 3 were edited poorly and had way too much cut out. Hopefully we’ll see a bunch of deleted scenes for someone to go in and fanedit in as well as some trailer footage to cram in there.

That sounds like a heck of a lot of flaws for a seven out of ten movie.

The Bourne Identity
The action scenes were relatively well shot but the sound design in them was unprofessional. The climax was good but I felt that the whole film was leading up to something, and it never really delivered

Totally agree on the last bit, but the sound design is largely excellent though there are a few old fashioned bits of foley that stick out. It has a nice bass to it throughout that opens up on the HDMA track very well.

I thought that the fight scene inside that hotel (the one where Jason stabs the guy with a pen), sounded like the sound had been taken out and lazily replaced with stock foley.

The Bourne Identity (2002)

Enjoyed it quite a bit. Characters were interesting, acting was good and the story was solid. The action scenes were relatively well shot but the sound design in them was unprofessional. The climax was good but I felt that the whole film was leading up to something, and it never really delivered, but overall the film was very good and I can’t wait to watch the second one.

Religion

I don’t believe in God. I used to, but then my pessimism got in the way and I realised that the idea of God just isn’t one I can seriously believe. I don’t have any faith in some supreme being, I don’t believe in Heaven or Hell, I do believe that Jesus was real, but think he was some crazy guy who was executed because of his ways. So yes, just my two cents on Religion (particularly Christianity). I don’t have one.

different prequel versions? what to watch?
Time

In terms of prequel fanedits, my favourites have always been:

Magnoliafan’s Balance of the Force

Great restructure. All Gungan’s and Niemoidians are dubbed and some significant changes are shown through the subtitles, for example the Trade Federation casually discusses killing Naboo inhabitants, and the Gungans are looking for some kind of crystal the people of Naboo stole from them. Jar Jar is also this brash, Han Solo type, but without the cool factor, and improves tenfold. If you can get past the bad video quality and subtitles/strange languages, it’s great.

The Phantom Editor’s Attack of the Phantom

Little I can say about this one. All changes are well thought out and imrpove the story. I highly recommend the editors commentary if you choose to watch it a second time.

Kerr’s Dark Force Rising

Very short version of Episode III, cutting out a ton of my problems with the film. Grievous is actually pretty cool, and the pacing is great in it. No scene is useless.

I’ve never been a fan of L8wrtr’s or HAL9000’s versions, as they don’t do much to change the film and I essentially feel like I’m watching the original (though this reality is frequently broken by L8wrtr’s version with their poor audio cuts). Magnoliafan’s The Clone War is quite good, though he really doesn’t cut much from the film.

Halloween (2007)

Oh god. I really needed to see Michael Myers as a bitchy kid didn’t I? That’s like showing Darth Vader as a bitchy kid. And don’t get me started on the painful dialogue, or the rushed second half. At least the direction was alright and some of the performances were okay, or this would have been irredeemable.

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Ugh, so disappointing. There were some good parts, but overall it was meh to annoying. Way too much action, especially because it was all shaky-cam and confusing closeup choreography. Idris Elba was completely wasted in this film, unfortunately. And it was too long. One of those movies where I kept hoping it would get better but it never really did.

5.9? Why not just say 6?

Star Trek (2009)

I didn’t enjoy it as much as Into Darkness, mostly because of its lack of emotional moments compared to that film, the storybeing less engaging, and most characters other than Kirk and Spock being background noise, given little to do. The visual look of the film is fantastic, with great set design, and a brilliant combination of practical effects and CGI. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto fill their characters well and are very well fleshed out, I love seeing the origins of their friendship. Thd villain isn’t as interesting as Khan in the sequel, but is passable (I love how desperate he is at the end to kill Spock). Leonard Nimoy’s role is great, and I love how he does the monologue at the end. All in all, though I didn’t love it, I enjoyed it immensely and had a lot of fun with it.

My problems with Into Darkness all center around the unbelievably poor writing. Abrams has a long history of employing bad writers and then overcoming that with style over substance. To him, as long as it feels right, it doesn’t matter if it makes sense. The writers don’t have even a basic grasp of science. Back in the first film, a single star goes supernova and that literally threatens THE ENTIRE GALAXY.

Look at the introduction of interplanetary transporters. It’s incredibly stupid and something that’s far too advanced for even that period of time. Just transporting something between two planets in the same system would be miraculous but to do that between planets that are in completely separate quadrants of the galaxy? Virtually impossible. Not to mention the rippling effects that would have on galactic civilization as a whole. Who needs starships when you can beam to wherever you need to go even if its on the other side of the galaxy.

Then you have Khan’s miracle blood that can bring people back from the dead. Solely introduced just so they can ripoff WoK and then immediately bring the character back to life afterward. Completely undermines the scene and is unfathomably cheap. Then the miracle cure for death is immediately swept under the rug and will never be brought up again.

I won’t even get into the idiocy of Benedict as Kahn. It was a crap script for a crap movie.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)

Enjoyed it a lot, I can see why it’s considered the “fan favourite.” The performances were all good, no real standouts, other than Robert Englund, who’s not in it much, and unlike the original he wasn’t spectacular when he was on screen. The characters were all developed well enough, though some came across as cliches and little more than an excuse to have a flashy death scene (which were all creative and my favourite parts of the film). It was also stuffed full of eighty’s cheese, which means that it hasn’t aged well at all. But overall it was very fun and had some great practical effects.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) - 7/10

It’s far from perfect, but it’s a ton of fun. Robert Englund as Fred Krueger isn’t in it all that much, but every scene he’s in is gold. It’s funny how cheesy it is at times, and how obvious the fire suit is when Freddy is burned by Nancy, and some characters are underwritten and others are poorly acted, but most of the film is awesome. The soundtrack, direction, camerawork and sound effects are great, and overall it’s just a really cool movie.

The burn scene may have an obvious mask, but it’s awesome. It’s the longest a stuntman has ever burned on film in a single take.
I love the film right up to the final four-ish minutes.

Oh I don’t think the scene sucks merely because the burn mask is obvious. I was laughing with joy the whole time Freddy was on fire! “I’ll kill you slow!” And I too don’t really get the final five minutes. The closest I can chalk it up to is that it’s Marge’s dream, since she’s too blackout drunk at that point to remember any previous events from the film. But even that’s a stretch.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

It’s not an especially popular opinion among “Trekkie’s” but I loved this film! Seriously, I enjoyed myself all of the way through. The performances were excellent, especially Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Benedict Cumberbatch, who doesn’t jusy rip off Ricardo Montalbán from Star Trek II. Also, after watching The Wrath of Khan, I can safely say that I can’t grasp people saying that Into Darkness is the same film, the plot is completely different. Why does The Force Awakens get a pass from tons of people even though it is way more similar to Star Wars than this is to The Wrath of Khan? The characters are extremely well developed, and I loved that every core member of the Enterprise got a moment to shine (I loved Sulu’s speech to the Klingon’s). Overall the only problems I saw were the fakeout death of Kirk and some too obvious visual riffs from The Wrath of Khan (I don’t mind the big “KHAAAAN!” as it adds to Spock’s character in a different way than it did to Kirk in Star Trek II. Maybe it was my lowered expectations, but I adored this film, just as much as I adored The Wrath of Khan.
