Ranking the Star Trek films (and/or series')
Time

Since I’m not going to watch the Next Generation films for some time, I’ll just rank the ones I’ve seen so far.

  1. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)
  2. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)
  3. Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
  4. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)
  5. Star Trek Beyond (2016)
  6. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)
  7. Star Trek (2009)
  8. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
  9. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989)

Do note, that I like all of these films except for The Final Frontier.

Saw this again the other day and it’s even worse now. Almost as bad as the prequels as time passes. Absolute garbage. Will not be watching it again.

TFA is the equal of ROTJ – ie. nice production values and some decent character moments aside, neither are very good.

I dunno, I think both are pretty damn good. I’d give both a seven out of ten.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991)

Wonderful swan song to the Original Series crew. Great story and a lot of fun to watch. All the actors could by this point play the characters in their sleep, so of course they do a great job. All in all, I loved it and it’s probably my second favourite Star Trek film so far.

9/10

And with that, I’ve officially watched all of the Original Series movies. I’m not sure if I should go straight to the Next Generation films or wait until I’ve watched some more of the show. What do you guys think?

I was going to start watching The Undiscovered Country, but then I was finally able to see:

Star Trek Beyond (2016)

Loved it. Not as good as Into Darkness, but better than the 2009 one. The cast was spectacular as always, and I loved the expanded role for Bones McCoy, and his relationship with Spock. The action scenes were stunning, loved the direction of those, and Simon Pegg and Doug Jung’s script was amusing and interesting. Some parts were a little predictable, and a little cheesy, and the villain was quite underdeveloped, but overall I loved it.

8/10

As of now I’ve started watching Star Trek VI, I’ll probably post my thoughts soon.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

I didn’t expect much given the ludicrous premise, but… I loved it. William Shatner got his acting chops back, and each member of the Enterprise got something to do. I did wonder though, with all the times they show off their futuristic tech, why didn’t it result in another alternate timeline? But that’s a minor quibble. The movie was charming and irreverent.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)

Pretty good follow up to The Wrath of Khan, even though it pales in comparison to that film. William Shatner’s acting abilities seem to have disappeared between movies, and the death of his son had little emotional impact, plus a number of minor flaws (plot holes, strange coincidences). Leonard Nimoy’s direction was very good, and the Genesis planet made for an interesting and aesthetically pleasing setting. The plot, while nothing extraordinary, was good, and the characters all felt like themselves. Overall, while nothing amazing, it was an immensely entertaining threequel.

The recasting of Lt. Saavik was a major disappointment.

To be honest, I didn’t even realise she’d been recast. It’s been a while since I’ve seen TWOK though.

Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)

Ha! What a trip! It was far from high art, but how entertaining! It took itself even less seriously than Freddy vs. Jason, which is saying a lot. Robert Englund is clearly having the time of his life in this film, cracking one liners and jokes like there’s no tomorrow. The characters aren’t particularly developed, but the actors do okay. My thoughts on Freddy vs. Jason carry over to this film. A fun filled, adventurous romp that never takes itself seriously, though again, I can’t really justify giving this any higher than a:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

It was…good, I guess. I don’t understand all of the criticisms, but I do understand some of them. Though it was slow paced, it rarely felt boring. The visual were very good, and mostly held up. The music was spectacular, I didn’t know that The Next Generation’s main theme debuted in this movie. My main problem was that the characters didn’t act right. None of them showed the charm and fun that they exhibited in the series, and the plot was really strange and convoluted. All in all though, I mostly liked this film.

I’m guessing LuckyGungan read some unfavorable reviews (of which there are many and I understand why) and decided to change his score. Of course, the fun could have worn off fast after the film was over leaving him with a changed opinion.

A bit of both, actually.

You should avoid letting other people’s reviews alter your opinion much on a movie.

I do try, but so much of the time I’ll read or watch a review and go “oh yeah, he’s completely right, that was in fact bad/good” Lack of free will, perhaps.

Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

It was stupid, daft and completely over the top, but really, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have heaps of fun watching this, especially in the second half. It was great to see Robert Englund back in the role of Freddy Krueger, and he did a great job. The other acting was mostly mediocre, I can’t really point out any performance that was any worse or better than the others (apart from Englund’s). The action was great fun to watch, and the final confrontation did not disappoint (unlike the one from Alien vs. Predator).

4/10

After careful consideration, I’m changing my score for this film. It was indeed quite poor.
