How was the ending of TFA bad? The final scene with her and Luke was amazing.

It left me with a burning itch to know how their first conversation played out. I think that’s the sign of a good ending but some prefer immediate gratification and that’s fine too.

The whole story is effectively unrelated to Luke. If it was done correctly, Luke’s disappearance would be the central driving force of the plot.

But it was. Your lying isn’t going to change the nature of the matter.

The plot should have slowly built up the suspense with clues and mysteries regarding his disappearance. Something like that would make the last scene meaningful and make the audience burning with anticipation. As it is now, it is just some random unrelated scene. Truly a horrible ending to a horrible storyline.

That’s one way they could have done it but it definitely isn’t the only viable option of making a plot revolving around finding Luke work. Get your head out of your ass.

Take a look at KOTOR how this kind of thing (mystery, suspense, etc.) is done properly.

A plot twist and finding a character at the end of a story are two different things man.

I have a feeling that the lava planet was added later and the original idea was that Vader was on a Stardestroyer. I don’t have much to base that on, so I could very well be wrong.
It would have been nice if he was on his big Destroyer from ESB. I know some would complain that it would ruin that ships reveal in ESB, but I see this film as a bonus story to the OT, not something to watch before it.

Well it would certainly be nice to see executor in R1. However, I have always assumed that it was constructed sometime between ANH and ESB, since Vader’s flagship was a normal ISD in ANH.

Still I would personally prefer if they met on a ship (even if just ISD) instead of lava planet. It would give the feeling that Vader is constantly doing something instead of sitting somewhere.

Why can’t Vader chill once in a while?

The only set photos that are remotely spoilerish are the photos of the black figures on planet Ireland. That along with the anundance of water that got brought to that set has led people to speculate that this scene could possibly be the rumored battle between Luke, Rey, Kylo and the KoR. But then again that’s still not full on spoilers as what they were shooting could be just a dream sequence or something involving the rumored Force Tree.

I started watching Return of the Jedi at about 6am, and its issues outweighed the good for the first time. Honestly, it gets worse each time I watch it.

I have been going through a similar experience with ROTJ but I don’t think I’ll ever see it as being anything less than okay. What was the one aspect of the film that caused you to change your opinion?

Nearly every character is misused and flat compared to their dynamic counterparts from the previous films. Han has nothing to do and is stupidly jealous, Lando’s betrayal is not addressed, Leia could be interchangeable with anyone, the sister plot twist has never sat well with me, Vader goes from wanting to overthrow the Emperor to being fine with having Luke kill him to prove a point that doesn’t make sense, the “I can turn him to the good side!” is incredibly naïve and sounds very childish, “A certain point of view?!”, Boba Fett didn’t need to be in the movie, the Ewoks ruin the film’s pacing, I could probably go on. These issues just got to me where the parts I usually enjoyed couldn’t save the film anymore.

The only point I disagree with is when you said Luke seeing good in Vader is naive. He surely should have felt something in Vader when he was offered a place at his side. I wish Luke could have said something like “Bringing our father back won’t undo all the things he’s done but it’s a start” or something stating the realistic nature of redeeming the right hand of The Devil.

Does the screenshot relate to him quoting Tropic Thunder? If not then he had no real reason to say it.

He’s calling the other guy a retard. There’s no reason at all to say it.

Then I have no sympathy for the man.

Especially when it’s this easy to expand your vocabulary.

Oh noes! I sense a “thinly veiled” attack upon my personage. Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope…

If I were personally attacking you you’d know it. There’s not many things more overt than me verbally assaulting someone.

Their reasons are their own all that really matters now is that Rian Johnson brings us another great addition to the saga.

Steering the conversation actually towards TLJ:

are these Daisy’s eyes? I’m not sure exactly what this would have to do with Rey unless she turns to the Dark Side or something but I think it would be interesting as hell to delve into the rationales of our villains. Perhaps not to the point where we sympathize with them but to the point where we get where they’re coming from. There was a bit of this in Krennic and although briefly touched on it was one of my favorite parts of Rogue One.

I still think that a list of elements that the story had to contain probably came from higher-ups.

If anything that list probably only consisted of:

  • TIE Fighters/X-Wings

  • Original cast returning

  • Diverse cast

though I’m sure they contributed to story development in other ways. Probably telling JJ and Kasdan what they couldn’t do.

Kirk Lazarus: Everybody knows you never go full retard.

Tugg Speedman: What do you mean?

Kirk Lazarus: Check it out. Dustin Hoffman, ‘Rain Man,’ look retarded, act retarded, not retarded. Counted toothpicks, cheated cards. Autistic, sho’. Not retarded. You know Tom Hanks, ‘Forrest Gump.’ Slow, yes. Retarded, maybe. Braces on his legs. But he charmed the pants off Nixon and won a ping-pong competition. That ain’t retarded. Peter Sellers, “Being There.” Infantile, yes. Retarded, no. You went full retard, man. Never go full retard. You don’t buy that? Ask Sean Penn, 2001, “I Am Sam.” Remember? Went full retard, went home empty handed…

Full Retard

I can’t believe you posted this over 12 hours ago and haven’t gotten destroyed yet. Quite the anomaly you are.

See also: Luke’s clever use of foresight in knowing the outcome of a complex web of cause and effect in Jabba’s palace which culminated in an almost miraculous rescue of Han Solo with no Rebel casualties.

That just made me realize. Han chides Finn for not understanding how the Force works, when in reality, how many harebrained schemes do we see in the OT that seem to rely on sheer luck, i.e. using the Force?

Yet more vindication that Finn is the best character in TFA, in addition to being my personal favorite.

I can definitely see him becoming my favorite after he receives further development and goes through his character arc. For some strange reason I think he’s going to die before he reaches the emotional maturity I know he’s capable of.

Yes, TFA was safe but so was Rogue One and they’re both good films. But lets not forget that JJ wrote the script as well so I’m sure a lot of the safe aspects of the film were due to him and Disney.

Rogue One is hardly “risky”, but it’s considerably moreso than TFA.
TFA is the blockbuster equivalent of Oscar bait; checking requirements off a list to ensure lots of money/awards.
Rogue One at least told an interesting story we hadn’t seen before.

I think the more bitter than sweet nature of TFA’s backstory along with Rey being inherently more competent in The Force than Luke partially offsets the fact that Rogue One didn’t focus on the Light Side v Dark Side debacle.

TLJ will be very telling as to the general direction of new Star Wars. I’m willing to dismiss TFA as JJ’s fanboy vanity project if TLJ does anything worthwhile.

Yeah, especially considering how well TFA and R1 did. If TLJ isn’t innovative or original (for the most part) Disney will have shown their unwillingness to do new things. This would make the brand worthless in time.

From what I’ve heard Looper is a very interesting movie so if anything we should be getting a “radical” film.

What a naive thinking. It will be Disney/LF who will specify what kind of film it will be.

They wouldn’t hire someone like this if they didn’t want to go in an interesting direction. If they really wanted more of the same they would have probably would have went for a more run of the mill director.

I would not call Kasdan “run-of-the-mill” writer either and yet look at how TFA turned out.

Something else than sitting around in Ewok village, twiddling her thumbs? Yes, please.

Like destroying the shield generator? Oh wait, that is what she is doing already…

When I said “something else” I was referring to her romance subplot.

She definitely plays a role in terms of the plot both in that and in the rescue of Han but she doesn’t have much internal stuff going on and that’s the main problem with her in ROTJ. Nor does Han for that matter.

He also directed ‘Fly’ from Breaking Bad, which, boiled down, is essentially just two men trapped in a room with a fly stretched out for an hour, and it turned out to be one of the best episodes of the entire series.

How the shit did you forget Ozymandias?

I never watched Season 5

What!? You need to watch it, seriously. It’s the best last season of any TV show ever.

Eh, I’ve watched the first few episodes and never felt compelled to finish it. Season 4 ended perfectly with an amazing build-up, climax, and one of the most satisfying resolutions in any TV series. From what I’ve seen of Season 5, it just felt kinda forced and unnecessary, and a total mood killer after binging the first 4.

As great as the Season 4 finale was you don’t want to see how the overall story ends?
