Take a look and let me know what do you think:
Mondo BD Vs Mondo BD enhanced +grain plate applied (from compressed file @30mbps)

Based on the screenshots I don't think it's an enhancement over the original image.
Definitely would like to view the clips. Please post links.
I'm willing to chip in a fistful of dollars to acquire the IB tech print. Are there any additional costs over and above the IB tech print purchase price?
poita, is the price negotiable?
The green is definitely there too. During the opening credits, some nighttime/interior scenes and in the desert. Look at Blondie's teeth when Tuco catches up with him at Shorty's hanging. Not right.

Details on the restoration of "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly"
For the color they used one or two Technicolor copies of the era as a reference and they have consulted the assistant cameraman Sergio Salvati: he was the one who insisted on correcting color faded to yellow, arguing that this was the way in which Leone had wanted and thought.
If Sergio Salvati surmised that SL wanted his film bathed in such an extreme yellow, wouldn't IB Technicolor prints reflect this as well?

How about i grab this shot we've been looking at and PDB get maybe a minutes worth of a nighttime scene or darker scene from both Mondo and 4k?
Uncompressed video and no sound needed
Excellent idea. The nighttime/interior scenes may require different regrade settings.

Mondo and spoRv
Wow, that's most impressive.
Is there hope for achieving a Mondo-like colours/brightness without sacrificing overall picture quality of the 4K?

Still thinking all of these color regrading discussion merit its own thread!
Absolutely. Is it too late to start now after so much discussion here?
Mondo takes 1st place and a close second is kk's regraded shot.
kk, have you been using the same settings for all the screenshots you've regraded and posted on the net?

Is there a link to the IB tech print for sale?

It seems that you and TheHutt are the experts on this film, would either of you be interested in working with me to create a regraded US theatrical cut and US extended cut with mono tracks to make everybody currently angry about the official release having the strong blanket yellow tint and lacking mono with original sound effects happy again?
I'd be happy to work with you on this. I will post more details on my thoughts on this later when I have more time.
Forgive my ignorance but once one has this print what is the process and cost associated with conversion for home viewing?

Your project sounds like exactly what I've been waiting for them to release officially
So have I! lol
kk650, I'm happy to break it down for you but it depends on what cut you wish to use for your project. US/International, Italian or English Extended? This info will make it easier to advise on what audio/video sources will be required.
I don't think the goal should be to recreate the colours of Mondo; rather the focus, as you said, should be on removing the blanket yellow and optimizing image dynamics so that it looks...good. The regrade settings you used for your screenshots are already a big step in the right direction.
On page 1 of this thread is a description of my project that I posted on the Sergio Leone Web Board in late 2013. I put my project on hold until the release of the 4K BD. If you're intending to recreate the International cut, then this should help clarify things.
Indeed, I made a mistake. Sorry about that.
The "regrade" that has now been confirmed to be a Mondo screenshot seemed to have been modified much more than simply removing the yellow hue. Hence, my question to kk650 in post #60 above. I'm not sure from where I got the Mondo screenshot; probably another forum. That definitely explains why the images I linked to in post #65 appear to be from the same source...because they are!
Thanks for catching this. I will delete the screenshot comparison in post #65 to avoid any further confusion.
I made that comparison using kk650's regraded frame and a VLC snapshot of the 2009 Mondo image sourced from a 25GB mkv I have stored on my laptop. It was too difficult to get the exact same frame. I cropped both images to the same frame size before uploading.
They do appear to be from the same source, don't they?

That looks good. I'm pleased to see that there is definitely potential for a proper regrade.

Here's a very quick regrade I just did to remove the yellow tint, the screen comparison between the 2014 blu-ray and the regrade can be seen below:
Did you boost the brightness as well? It appears to be more than simply removing the yellow. Looks a bit off on my screen. Probably just me.

What's the one scene that's missing from the DVD?
Blondie holstering his pistol right after shooting the 3 bounty hunters after Tuco.

GBU IIRC from one of our threads has a tiny shot missing on the first DVD, but otherwise the print for both letterboxed LDs and the DVD is the same. The original WS LD had Italian captions for the characters which matched that 35mm print recently on ebay. The remastered LD merely substituted the English captions and this carried over to the DVD.
The 1990 LD, which is identical to the 1993 LD box set, is from a theatrical print. Reel change markers are clearly visible during the film.
The 1998 LD is from an entirely different and uncut source. By uncut I mean it doesn't suffer from the small cuts present on the 1990/1993 LD. There are no reel change markers and the color timing is slightly cooler as well.

How is your project going Lil Brutto/eurospec19? Would love to check it out when its finished!

I held off on completing my project until the release of the 4K. Now that I have it in hand I'm going to proceed with a regrade to scale back the excess yellow/teal. If the 4K regrade is superior to the Mondo (that I've already used) then I will have to revise my project accordingly.
Stay tuned!
I'm glad to hear that i'm not the only one planning to attempt to remove the yellow on this 4k remaster. Very much looking forward to seeing how you go about regrading this Lil Brutto.
Are you planning to use any source in particular as a colour reference?
Hi kk,
This is eurospec19 from bluray forum. Actually, I plan to use your screenshots and/or the Mondo BD as a colour reference. I posted a question over at bluray forum directed at you asking what settings you used to regrade your screenshots, which looked great to me. I won't be using the same software as you. Instead I'll use the colour correct function in FCP7. I'm not experienced with colour correction but I came across several youtube vids and "how to" links during my online search for more info. Trial and error at this point.
You mentioned in another thread that it was a blanket yellow applied to the entire film and that the same regrade setting could be used. Is that still the case?

screw pavtube... i highly recommend using adobe media encoder if your bd-video is mpeg2 or avc. results are far better. you'll also use the proper prores codecs and not the ffmpeg stuff, which can result in shitty playback within final cut (7 & x).
Thanks for the tip. The computer I was using crapped out and I no longer have pavtube. I'll use adobe media encoder this time around.
