The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

This is a thought, this is all it is, just a thought - what if we put ourselves in the shoes of someone that has never seen the movie and watches this cut, they have never seen any press about Palpatine’s return, but the first they see of it is on Exegol when Kylo meets him…what if, we keep the suspense going a bit longer, so, you have no mention of Palpatine in the crawl as planned, you then see Kylo go to Mustafar, get this pyramid thing that has sith noises coming from it, then we cut to Chewie, Finn and Poe getting the message, back to the Falcon landing back, Rey asking what’s the message? Then you hear what sounds like Palpatine’s message, interspliced with Kylo landing on Exegol, dubbed with the message, then you cut to the discussion and after Poe says, somehow Palpatine has returned, you cut again to Kylo on the lift, cut back to the rest of the resistance discussion, ending with Leia’s line and then cuts to Kylo hearing the voices and meeting Palpatine… it’s just a thought like I said. Would it work without disrupting the audio and music? Just think the simultaneous revelation on Palpatine to light and dark might have more impact…

Me too, only because Finn appears out of nowhere and it just feels a bit jarring. You don’t neccessarily have to show the light speed skipping part, reference it only. A lot of things in SW are referenced but we don’t necessarily need to see them to understand what they are. IMO anyway.

Unpopular opinion here:-

I’ve just watched Hal’s v3 workprint.

I really feel that the absence of the much hated ‘light speed skipping’ sequence slightly compromises the scene.

I know Hal’s reasons, I know a lot of people are wrapped up in the ‘tech/science’ of it…but I think it’s absence is jarring. The falcon/spy scene now just ends much too abruptly and lacks a crescendo…

Hal have you tried putting it back in? I’m not saying you have to like it…but have you tried it to get a feel in how it works from a pacing perspective?

I have to agree

How about inter-splicing Palpatine’s message, starting with Rey saying ‘whats the message?’ That aerial shot of them listening extend for another second or two, cut to Exegol for 2 seconds or so, then cut to Ren on the star destroyer looking out into space, then back to camp where the message should be running out, altering the audio each time to sound slightly different for each of the receivers that play it. Poe then delivers his line. No need to cut to crowds on other planets, just concentrate on the reactions from our main characters? Just a suggestion. If I was an editor myself, I would have a go at it, but I’m not, well not of any worth anyway.

I think you’re onto something here though. If done right (and I don’t think you’re that far off) it adds that eeriness you’re wanting for this scene. Palpatine should be really scary and we should be intimidated by him. I think you managed to convey this here. It should be a 'oh s#$t moment, rather than an ‘oh well’ moment.

I think the delay between Rey asking what’s the message and it being relayed was good, although some of the personal comm footage I felt wasn’t necessary. I think the depth and echo of Palpatines voice was really good, as was the choice of music, but a little too loud in places, as it masked the dialogue a bit. Also, I thought it was more powerful just to have the base camp hear the message and see their reactions, rather than go to Cloud city etc. More impact when you see the abject horror on the main characters faces. This isn’t to say that the message isn’t received elsewhere, it’s just off camera. I do think you’re onto something though and if you can get it just right, it should be considered to go in the cut in my opinion.

Yes, if you listen closely, my version of the broadcast kinda adds more context to the events of the ST in general.

Just seen V2 and I was blown away. Best fan edit I’ve seen so far. Well done everyone. I think with the other things yet to be added, it will make this film so so much better and be a fitting end to the saga.

I’m no editor, I have very little gripes at all. The only one improvement I think just needs to be looked at is when the Falcon lands back after we have the clipped out lihht speed skips, Finn does seem to be abruptly placed in the scene,is there any way of smoothing that transition a little bit? It’s a tiny thing, but if it can be done, excellent.

In the novelisation, Luke calls out to Leia several times. I’m not sure about this, it gaves us more Luke involvement which is good, and I think this was the intention, but ultimately takes away Leia’s decision to do what she has to do to reach Ben. What do you think? Better left out or put in?

Return of the Jedi Renewed (released)

Hi. I really enjoyed your edit. I like a lot of the colour corrections you did and additions of suns and atmospheres. I thought it would bug me that Vader scene at the beginning was cut, as I do love the line ‘…he is not as forgiving as I am…’ but watching the saga as a whole, the big baddy is Palpatine, so it has more impact to see him arrive at the beginning, as the main baddie, as having Vader arrive diminishes this looking at the bigger picture.

Cuts are well placed. It always bugged me that Boba Fett was killed way too clumsily, I hated Jedi Rocks, although the original Jabba’s palace dance I liked because the music is very nostalgic…but I don’t miss it that much to be honest. I liked getting rid of Han’s jealousy and that terrible line ‘somehow I’ve always known’

I’m also happy that you kept the celebrations from 1997 in - the one update from George Lucas that I really liked. The music is far more emotional, great to see other places in the galaxy celebrate. Etc. I have always liked Sebastian Shaw’s ghost, but it makes sense now to have a younger Anakin, as a force ghost, so I’m glad you left that in too.

Overall, a very good edit. So much so, it’s cannon for me now. Thank you for sharing it 😊

Absolutely loved Hal’s edits, especially ROTJ. Likewise John’s force ghost edit for Rey v Palpatine is extraordinary…just a thought for continuity, could a better version of Anakin’s force ghost go into ROTJ now, using Hayden’s ghost? How about a stuttering switch image between the younger and older versions of Anakin can be used, so Luke sees both versions of his father and it satisfies fans of Sebastian Shaw’s ghost and continuity between all the edits. Just a thought…
