The Empire Strikes Back - a general Random Thoughts thread

A lot of rebels don’t survive past one reel of each movie though. Even being Luke’s snowspeeder gunner is not a safe gig.
Who’s the one radio guy?

Pilots yes, but the command crew etc. like the before mentioned Dodonna and Rieekan could have been seen in the ROTJ briefing at least or something.

The one who says “enemy fighters coming to your way” in SW was on Hoth listening to the probe droid.

It’s interesting to think about that Wedge, 2-1B and that one radio guy are the only ones except for the main characters to appear in more than one film from the Alliance. The Empire I get since it’s so big, but for the rebels it would have been fun to see more same pilots and command crew even in the background. But I don’t mean too many, 1-3 more would have been enough, because it also helps world building to see new faces and lose others.

Another reason why some of the changes made for the 1997 Special Editions make no sense; especially for Star Wars…

The Death Star has a clear line of fire for the Rebel Base on Yavin IV (which was added into the scene for the 1997 SE) - even before the Rebels begin their attack:-

My mind is blown! Kudos to 005 😃

I’d love to hear an explanation from Lucas or Lucasfilm for that change!

“More visually dynamic”, “they’re fun”, “[GL] feels so happy about that”.

Apart from the GFFA, what is the film you own the most copies of?
Time

Every retail release I own apart from SW is the only one. Well, apart from all 4K releases which include BDs as well but I wouldn’t say any multi-release counts here. But I do have recorded VHSs from some of the same movies like the first 20 Bonds. Usually they differ somehow, like they are in P&S or open matte or at least an older scan of the film so why not still have them.

Why do these need to be posted separately? Would be easier to have them in the first post. Or just make a Youtube playlist out of them.

I haven’t posted many videos of late, but how would I go about editing the first post (in a thread I didn’t create) to include or update videos?

You obiviously can’t, but the thread creator can

Yeah, ZkinandBonez. Get on it. Did you not realize that creating a new thread is akin to taking on an extra part-time job?
Geeze, man.
/S

Are you saying that the thread creator can’t edit his first post or are you just being an asshole? I was responding to the question and it is the truth. What is your problem again?

Can we please not start an argument here. I get what you’re saying LexX, but this is how I’ve decided to run these threads and most people seem fine with it, so take it or leave it. I’ve added an in-progress index to the first post so that you can navigate through all the various posts easier than just scrolling through every page (once we get to multiple pages that is).

Now I’d appreciate if we could all get back on track in order to stop cluttering the thread with this discussion and focus on sharing and discussing trailers and promos instead.

My mistake making needlessly complicated suggestions of improvement.

Again, I was responding to a question to a guy who quoted my post. I already got your response for the first time. I guess I’ll leave it then.

You obiviously can’t, but the thread creator can as the first post is edited anyways to include all the posted trailers. That was just my opinion on usability from doing several video searches and chronological lists for a few years.

Reasoning Behind Changes from Release to Release

Always sounded mechanical to me.

Me too. I just compared the sound mixes and in the mono mix it sounds like an alarm (to me) but the original stereo mix it’s clearly just a beastly voice of the dianoga. The 5.1 recreation mix also sound like the mono mix in this case, and I think most official releases as well. I also thought for a long time it was some kind of alarm and Han just shoots something until I read somewhere, maybe from the novelization, that the dianoga was still a threat.

Return Of The Jedi - a general Random Thoughts thread

I think what ShamanWhill is talking about actually is what’s happening in RotJ.
Vader can’t kill the Emperor. The Emperor’s hold is too strong on him. Vader needs Luke to do it, which is his real reason to bring Luke to the Emperor. Vader knows that the murder will make him the new Emperor & make Luke much easier to turn to the darkside, where they can “rule the galaxy as father & son.”
I do wish this was mentioned in their scene at the docks though…
Seeing his son tortured is what finally gives Vader the power to break the darkside hold & do the deed himself. And thus the Return of the Jedi & a silent title-drop.

Hmm… But then again, Vader defends the Emperor when Luke picks up his lightsaber. And even the Emperor asks Luke to kill him. And later his father. It’s an interesting mix of what’s actually happening. They could never make sense of these kind of scenes today.

About the title: since it was originally Revenge of the Jedi, it never was about Vader.

First off, I think the writers completely forgot about Darth Vader’s motivation in Episode V. If you can recall, Darth Vader seemed to be misleading the Emperor into thinking that he would either turn Luke or kill him. But instead, we find in the famous scene where he tells Luke he’s his father, that Vader was actually plotting to get Luke to kill the Emperor for him. Come Episode VI, this plot line is completely abandoned, and I think that’s a real shame. I think it would make the movie 10 times more interesting if Vader was constantly bothering Luke, trying to get him to turn to the dark side so he can kill the Emperor. And at the same time, everyone on the light side can be telling Luke the same thing; kill the Emperor! We can then have Luke plan to turn his father back to the light side, and Vader will ultimately become the one who destroys the Emperor. After all, this was Vader’s problem. He had been living as a pawn of the Emperor for decades. It would be ultimately cowardly of him to get his son to get him out of this mess. And it is his Son that ultimately redeems him. So firstly, the movie should be more about Anakin’s relationship with Palpatine, and how it has soured.

While this sounds interesting as an idea, I think it plays out better in the movie. First off, based on purely what we saw in TESB is Vader’s one line about Luke killing the Emperor and ruling the galaxy together. Fine, but we do not know if he was telling the truth. Just moments ago he said to the Emperor that Luke would be their ally and he would join them or die. So Vader very well could just be saying anything to lure him to the dark side to serve his master.

Secondly, in ROTJ I think it would be harder to get more emotion out of the situation if Vader was basically on Luke’s side from the get-go. It plays out better when he must obey his master to the end where it kills them both. Otherwise it would’ve felt like “well if you didn’t kill him, I guess I had to do it myself” and then you’re just thinking why didn’t he do it years ago.

Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga 4k UHD -- 27 DISC Boxed Set -- 3/31/2020

… Are the Blu-rays just going to be the same 2011 versions , while the 4k will have the new scans? When you take a look at the purchase options for the older digital versions, you can see that the special features for each film (conversations & discoveries features)are the same as what is listed for the features on each of the new discs. …

Oh crap - I didn’t realise that. Has it been officially confirmed whether or not the Blu-Ray set will use new (better) scans for at least the main films? I’m no fan of the SE, but I was looking forward to a decent release and upgrade of the 2011 poop.

It’s pretty sure they’ll be the new masters since the whole discs are made from scratch anyway now that they include the extras. There’s no reason to use the old ones.
