Info: Encoding tips and ideas

I use Linux, so MeGUI isn’t an option. X264’s commannd line options are pretty straight forward, but I’ve never had a problem with Handbrake before so I haven’t learned them. As for size, when I did a CRF 20 encode I got a 5.5 GB file that looked great at 720p. It was only when I found that the lousy FAT32 file system used by USB sticks won’t hold the file that I started looking at making an AVCHD disc. Maybe I could try making an AVCHD structure on USB, though I’m not sure how many players can handle such a beast. As for 480p, I didn’t think that was legal for AVCHD.

What are you using the USB for? Instead of burning a disc for playback on a BD Player or to transfer to another PC? If you’re transferring to another PC you could get around the 4GB file size limit of FAT32 by creating a multi-part RAR archive. As I work in IT I know better than to suggest you format the USB as NTFS! 😉 If you’re using the USB instead of burning a disc for playback on a BD Player than I don’t know what to suggest, sorry.

Avisynth gate weave stabilization
Time

AviSynth is a great tool to have in your arsenal, as with any software there is a learning curve when you first start using it.

# Define orig
orig = last

# Remove Noise/Grain
temp=orig.TemporalSoften(7,255,255,25,2)
rep=Repair(temp,orig,mode=16).TemporalSoften(1,255,255,25,2)

# Merge DeNoised/DeGrained Frames into one sequence (3 frames for every 1 original frame)
source=Interleave(rep,orig,rep)

# Stabilize Video
mdata=DePanEstimate(source, range=1, trust=0, dxmax=1, dymax=1)
DePan(source, data=mdata, offset=1)

# Every 3 frames discard the 1st and 2nd frame
SelectEvery(3,2)

You probably don’t need all of the above, I’ve added comments to explain whats happening at each stage.

# Stabilize Video
source = last
mdata=DePanEstimate(source, range=1, trust=0, dxmax=1, dymax=1)
DePan(source, data=mdata, offset=1)

This is the stabilization part. If it’s not making a difference you may need to try playing with the settings, here is the explanation for the DePan plugin: http://avisynth.org.ru/depan/depan.html

Good Luck!

Star Wars vs. A New Hope - Which do you say and why?
Time

I make a point of only referring to the OT films as STAR WARS, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Interestingly and I’ve only just realised this but I tend to refer to the PT as Episodes 1, 2 & 3, rather than The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

Thus far I’ve only referred to The Force Awakens as The Force Awakens.

Info Wanted: Averaging the various versions of the 2004 master?
Time

About 3 years ago I experimented with producing a median average of the 4 different DVB releases of the 97SE of Star Wars. It had been suggested at the time that the smearing in these releases was the result of the capture cards/equipment used, rather than DVNR in the broadcast master.

I seem to recall the averaging did improve the picture, just not very much. 😦

I stumbled across this image in some article and it shows nicely how much more real the '97 CGI looks with some generational loss and 35mm colors. I think if TN1 do a 35mm transfer of the '97SE, like they said they eventually would, it could be a great resource for anyone wanting to do any kind of semi-specialized edition.

First of all that shot is gorgeous! As someone who enjoys the OOT & 97SE equally, anything after 97 is trash 😛, I eagerly and patiently wait for all of TN1’s OOT & 97SE projects!

We will be contacting a select few of you, to just quickly preview the new version of Empire Strikes Back for any major issues that can be fixed. This should take about a week or so.

Once we get feedback, if any then we will prepare the 25 G MKV for distribution, and the basic BD ISO also.

Team Negative1

Excellent news, keep up the good work! 😄

Okay, so now my question : when I split the video to get rid of your introduction so I just have the movie on its own, I noticed the audio came down from 256 kbps to 192 kbps, according to MediaInfo. So my guess is that the 256 kbps only concern your introduction, right? Isn’t 192 kbps a little down? What is it supposed to be when the Dolby is decoded from the print?

Actually, we used the GOUT audio, at 192k. For the Bluray, we are going to try to use higher bitrates, and better versions of the Audio.

Team Negative1

I didn’t realise it was the '93 mix, I could have sworn it was the Theatrical mix, no 3PO Tractor Beam line, no distracting glass breaking in the cell block shoot-out. Thanks for the info. 😃

I don’t mind grain, but is it really supposed to be as grainy as it is in some shots? I ask this because Mike Verta’s version of this shot doesn’t look nearly as grainy: https://vimeo.com/120218626

Either way, thanks so much to Team Negative 1 for all your hard work.

My guess would be that yes it is, for this print. Is Mike Verta’s print a LPP print? If not then you’re not comparing like for like. From what I gather LPP prints tend to be more grainy compared to standard Kodak Eastman film stock although I could be wrong.

I’ve now had the chance to watch this from start to finish and wow, just wow! The most apt word I can think of to describe this is GORGEOUS! I cannot express how happy this has made me or how appreciative and grateful I am for all the work and efforts of Team -1!

Personally I was very happy with the quality of the encode and the settings used and see no need to change it.

Finally I just wanted to mention that like others I have noticed some white/bright smearing such as in the scene where the Jawas are mobilising the droids inside the sandcrawler in order to present them for sale. If this can be fixed then great if not then I can very easily live with it!

Thanks again Team -1!

"Star Wars Fans Petition For George Lucas To Come Back And Direct Episode IX" Discussion
Time

At first I thought “Why?” but after a couple of minutes I realised, for the sequel trilogy to be a “soft” reboot of the OT they would need the third movie to suck (general fan consensus, not my own opinion) and who better to make a Star Wars movie suck then George Luca$! They’ll also need George Luca$'s help when the trilogy is done, who else is as qualified as he is to run… err I mean Special Edition this latest trilogy into the ground.

On the topic of feeling / not feeling sorry for George Luca$ I’m in the latter category, he’s finally reaping what he’s been sewing since 1995! Payback’s a bitch ain’t it George!

Pity me. I still have a HLD-X9 laserdisc player.
Time

LaserDiscs played on a top-end player like the HLD-X0, HLD-X9, LD-S9 or CLD-R7G and then run through a video scaler/processor like the DVDO iScan VP50, VP50PRO or Duo and viewed on an LCD/LED/Plasma TV/Display will give you the very best picture quality possible from the LaserDisc format. This however doesn’t change the fact that what you’re watching is a LaserDisc.

Star Wars Laserdisc Preservations. See 1st Post for Updates.
Time

Hi Althor,

I just wanted to say thank you so much for all you’ve done, I downloaded and watched your JSC trilogy at the weekend and was blown away for an NTSC LaserDisc transfer! I almost cried at the absence of DVNR smearing! The strong colours, visible film grain and slight film flicker also put a big smile on my face! The only down side is, thanks to you I now know I must add the JSC to my LaserDisc collection!

I know you have subsequently done a five capture average of the JSC, unfortunately this isn’t available on myspleen that I could see. The results you have been getting with LD-Decode are incredible (for LaserDisc) HappyCube has done an amazing job on the software! I see you mentioned you wouldn’t want to do a five capture average using LD-Decode due to the size of the files and decoding time, have you considered doing a three or even two capture average instead?

Once again thanks for all you’ve done!
