Some Noob Analogue Capturing Questions
Time

I am no expert but if I had to guess I would say it looks like you've only captured either the top or bottom field for each frame, that's why the images are half the proper height (240 instead of 480) it would also explain the jaggies/aliasing/tearing you are seeing. Or you have somehow captured at double the normal frame rate causing each field to become its own frame... :S Unfortunately I have no experience capturing using VDub or the capture card you have so I don't have any advice on how to fix this. :(

Hopefully someone else will be able to steer you in the right direction! ;)

Prequel Hater's Rant
Time

I have to say I think he is right, the Prequels do enrich the OUT, but only because the Prequels are such rubbish films that they eclipse the faults of the OUT and just make you appreciate the OUT that much more!

Also lets do some maths. Mr. Newman says if you hate the prequels that means you hate 3/6 films in the box-set

OK so 3/6 is 50% which according to Mr. Newman means your only a blow-hard fan. :(

But wait! all of my box-sets only have 3 films (you know which ones!), and as I hate 0 of the films in those box-sets that's 0% hate and according to Mr. Newman 0% hate = die-hard fan!

With this in mind and considering how many box-sets of the OT I have, according to Mr. Newman I and allot of others here must be some kind of super die-hard fans! :D

:p to Mr. Newman.

Info: 1997 SE DV Broadcast Info & Discussion
Time

The broadcast versions will always be sharper/more detailed as they were broadcast and captured in native PAL 16:9 (1024x576) where as DJs LD captures are coming from a letter-boxed NTSC 4:3 (640x480) source, which roughly speaking gives the broadcast versions ~37.5% more resolution. That said I was pleasantly surprised by the picture quality of DJs capture! There was some block like noise I could see but this may just be from the H.264 compression...?

As someone who has done a LD preservation of the 97SE myself I am curious to know what AviSynth filters you are using? :)

Lucas to sue Star Wars designer

If Lucas hires someone to design something for him, and that person designs it as a term of his employment, then whether or not Lucas designed it, he owns the design. I'm no fan of Lucas, but in this case I think he has every right to protect the designs that are so integral to his product line.
I have to say personally I find this situation quite ironic. Lucas being deprived of something he feels he has a right to by the law which says he doesn't own it, sound familiar?

While I have no love for either party in this case, I cant help but feel if George had contracted Aiensworth properly in the first place instead of using a hand-shake agreement he wouldn't be in this mess now would he?

What do you think was the best release of the OT at the time it came out?

Ah, remember when new Star Wars video releases were exciting?
Sadly Yes, sadly because its no longer the case! :(

On a slightly different note I do wonder how much George would make if he released a proper archival Blu-Ray box set of the OT including:

1977 Star Wars
1981 Star wars
1997 Star Wars
2004 Star Wars
201* Star Wars (3D)
1980 The Empire Strikes Back
1997 The Empire Strikes Back
2004 The Empire Strikes Back
201* The Empire Strikes Back (3D)
1982 Return Of The Jedi
1997 Return Of The Jedi
2004 Return Of The Jedi
201* Return Of The Jedi (3D)

+ Any Extras

Now that would be a box set I could get excited about! ;)

Personally I couldn't care less for the '04 and 3D versions but I included them for the sake of completeness.

This was directed by Anthony Hemingway in the same manner as Richard Marquand directed Jedi.

Unfortunately, that's true. Here is an excerpt from an Entertainment Weekly article addressing that very issue.

Lucas, who is also producing and financing, needs reshoots and must do them himself. According to two sources close to the project, Hemingway was hoping to stay on for the redos, but was already committed to direct episodes of David Simon's New Orleans series Treme for HBO. (Lucas wasn't willing to wait.)

Lucasfilm confirms the directorial shift, which FirstShowing.net broke, but denies any conflict with Hemingway, saying Lucas and producer Rick McCallum will oversee the reshoot — with Hemingway's approval

With Hemingway's approval. Sure.
Call me cynical but it sounds like George isn't even waiting for the 1.0 release before he starts making alterations and revising his original vision for the film! *sigh*

PAL LaserDisc Dot Crawl & Dropout Removal
Time

I was wondering if anyone has any recommended AviSynth commands to remove/reduce the amount of dot crawl and dropouts (horizontal black flecks) from a PAL LaserDisc capture?

For the droupouts I've tried using the DeScratch() filter and while I could get it to remove them it caused unwanted side effects where it misinterpreted detail lines for dropouts. Here is the command I was using:

TurnLeft().DeScratch(mindif=20,maxgap=30,maxwidth=1,minlen=20,maxlen=60,maxangle=0,blurlen=8,border=0,keep=0).TurnRight()
I have also tried using the DeSpot() filter but this caused the stars to blink on and off *sigh*

For the dot crawl I have tried DeDot() which didn't seem to do anything. I have also tried GuavaComb however this wasn't very effective either. I am currently using the following which helps but is by no means brilliant. :(

RemoveGrain(mode=0,modeU=2,modeV=2).
RemoveGrain(mode=0,modeU=2,modeV=2)
FFT3DFilter(sigma=3,sigma2=3*1.67,sigma3=3*3.3,sigma4=3*6.67,plane=3,bt=3,bw=16,bh=16,ow=8,oh=8,sharpen=0.3,smin=2-,smax=1000,wintype=2,kratio=1,measure=true,interlaced=false,degrid=1)
Any advice / suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Many Thanks. :)

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

I agree. It's not about fixing mistakes at all. The issue is that the Humdinger is just proof that Lucas treats his entire fan base the same - him first, them second. Now the SE lovers are about to get the same treatment us OOT lovers received - the least amount of effort possible. A previous release ported to new a format and then advertised as new release. Shameful.
So the Blu-Ray release is to 04SE fans what the GOUT was to us OOT fans. :-/

I hope you enjoy the Technicolor discs and find them worth the newsgroup subscription! ;) Just so you know I don't plan to re-author the '97SE DVDs but simply release a set of fixed audio files and instructions on how to apply the fixed audio to the DVD ISO files.

If you have the hard drive space you could download the '97SE DVDs now and then just download the audio fix files when I release them. Just a thought :)

Hi there, first post and all that, hello!

I'm very excited to see this reconstruction but I've hit a small snag. Every time I try and extract the .rar files, it gets right up to the very end and then asks me to "Please locate the file named sw-deed-part1.r00." Has this happened to anyone else? Help? D:

That's weird. What are you using to unrar?

Stuffit Expander. Is there something else I could try? Or a different set of links?
On the Mac I use 'The Unarchiver' rather than Stuffit. :)

Most likely the GOUT disc for ESB has a darker picture then the GOUT disc of SW as I used the same colour settings for Empire as I did the revised SW disc. :)

Oh, I see! The same color settings are being applied to each film. Did you not adjust them between the first and second versions of SW though? I seem to remember that you said something to that effect earlier on. I can fully understand that you don't want to re-do it though. Overall it looks great. :)
Sorry if I caused some confusion here! :( Between the 1st and 2nd version of Star Wars I adjusted the white level to be approx. -10IRE of the original GOUT white level. I then saved the settings as a pre-set or colour grade and re-used them without modification for Empire. So basically Empire uses the exact same settings as the revised version of Star Wars. ;)

I hope that clears things up. :)
