Zombie84, thanks for the feedback, I was thinking the corrected shots looked a little too green/cyan, so thanks for confirming that. ;)

Moth3r to answer your question, yes I have done a basic calibration of my display, well actually I have done as advanced a calibration as Mac OS will allow me! I am running Windows XP SP3 in a Virtual Machine at present.

Here are some updated comparisons using Zombie84's suggestions for settings adjustments.

Here are the latest settings I am using for colour correction:

ColorYUV(off_u=-1.0,off_v=-2.29).Levels(15,1.08,255,0,255).Tweak(sat=1.2)

LOL

Being from Great Britain that picture initially had a different meaning for me, I initially thought it was a metaphor for the 2004 SE being "Pants" as in rubbish. Pants is a generic term for male underwear here and those shorts look like boxer-shorts underwear, pants also means rubbish, crap, etc. here.

Any way here are some comparison shot between the GOUT with G-Force's script applied sans the colour correction commands and the GOUT with G-Force's script applied with my colour correction command.

Following my previous post I have been playing with the avisynth filters; ColorYUV, Levels and Tweak to try and improve upon the results of the previous settings I posted. I am currently using the following:

ColorYUV(off_u=-2.0,off_v=-4.58).Levels(15,1.08,255,0,255).Tweak(sat=1.1)

After all this playing around it is my opinion that the reason the GOUT looks so washed out is more due to a lack of contrast and the excessive red levels then an actual lack of saturation, although that's not to say that it couldn't use a saturation boost as you can see from the above settings.

I am at work at the moment, but if people are interested I will try and post some before/after shots of the above settings when I get home.

I thought I would post this in case it was of any use to anyone.

The following avisynth settings seem to work well for me:

Levels(15,1.08,250,0,250).ColorYUV(off_u=-3,off_v=-6).Tweak(sat=1.3)

I was using this shot:
http://savestarwars.com/images/senatorcorrected/technicolor6.jpg
from the Technicolor screening as my reference while trying to mentally compensate for the over exposure of the photo.

Ideally I would be using these settings:

Levels(16,1.08,235,0,255).ColorYUV(off_u=-3,off_v=-6).Tweak(sat=1.3)

As this matches up very closely IMO, however it causes problems with bright whites :(

In case anyone was wondering, I am a avisynth noob, this thread got me to have a go at trying to use it! ;)

That's so true...and sad...

Just like Han Solo I like to keep a bit of optimism. If G-Force and Dark Jedi can make the GOUT look as good as the screen caps Dark Jedi posted plus the possible addition of Zombie84s suggestions on colour correction, imagine what could be done with the Blu-Ray release!

GL thought he could have his cake and eat it too with the GOUT, I think those I mentioned about have robbed him of that! :D

Thank you to all those who have shown an interest in my efforts. :)

If I get some time this weekend I will post some screen captures from SW and ESB. I plan to start work on Jedi next Friday, so hopefully within a few weeks I should have the whole Coffret finished. :D

I don't know how useful / reliable this is but I had a thought, As all you (zombie84) have for reference are photos of the technicolor print screenings, which are not ideal. Could you not use the OUT trailers on the 2004 bonus disc instead?

The reason I suggest this is I was watching a few of the trailers today and noticed how much their colours resembled what you seem to be aiming for. I was thinking these might be a better source of reference, but I am no expert so I could well be wrong.

Dark Jedi those caps from the V3 look fab! :D

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

The actual movies of this release hold no interest for me, which is a shame as they should be the main focus of the release not the special features! Still as I don't own a blu-ray player I suppose its a moot point.

Did anyone else notice the last line of the trailer is Vader saying "There is no escape" I can't help but feel this is directed at us, GL rubbing salt into the wound! :(

With quality control being what it is at LFL with a bit of luck they will slip up and accidentally include all the missing shots etc we need in the special features to make a HD restoration of the OUT! :D

Thanks Frink! ;)

I just thought I would let you all know that the 1995 THX Empire DVD played through fine so that's finished which just leaves Jedi to go. As I said before I am going away for about a week from the 21st Dec so I will get back to work on Jedi when I get home.

Once all 3 DVDs are finished I will put together the covers and disc labels and then I will be ready to upload the release to the newsgroup. :)

I find it interesting how quickly threads can become dormant LOL so I come barring good news! I am watching my 1995 THX ESB DVD as I type and so far things look good! So long as nothing jumps out at me I am happy to call this one finished. :D

Now I do have some less than good news as well. Unfortunately because of delays caused by trying to fix the jaggies issue and my week off with man flu I am not going to hit my target of finishing this release by Christmas. So I am now going to aim for a release early in the new year. (1st or 2nd week of Jan) :)

I am going away on Holiday from the 21st for a week and probably wont have internet access while I am away, so I will say now in advance, Merry Christmas to all who read this thread and a Happy New Year and of course most importantly May the Force be with You All!

Apologies for not posting any updates in the last week, I have been unwell with a bad cough and the flu and so there has not been much progress during that time. :( I am just about to start encoding to MPEG2 and AC3 when thats done I will be ready to author the DVD. Once I have watched it and I am happy its okay that will be ESB finished, with just ROTJ left to go.

I will let you know how the DVD turns out :)

You will all be pleased to hear that I was 100% happy with the DVD image for ANH which means ANH is officially complete. Now onto ESB. I have finished capturing and averaging the first LD of ESB and will hopefully do the same with the second tomorrow. :)

I would estimate that so long as I don't encounter any new problems, I should have ESB finished by the end of Friday. :D

Just a quick update. I finished putting the DVD project together for ANH, I am actually re-encoding the video just now as I found I had some spare space to fill, so I have increased the bit-rate of the main feature to the max my encoder will allow (7.7mbps VBR Max 9mbps) Once this is done I will be ready to build the DVD image which I will then burn and preview to make sure I am happy with it.

If all goes well this should mean ANH will be finished by the end of today, and then I can get cracking on ESB. :)

Link343, I started uploading ANH but then my newsreader reported 'Read Errors' and as I was rendering at the time I figured I was asking my iMac to do too much at once so I stopped the upload. Uploading to the newsgroup for both sets will have to wait until I have finished the 1995 THX release.

Msycamore, you know I never thought to check the bonus DVD of the '04 release (my opinion of the '04 release is that high! *sarcasim*) these are exactly what I need, thanks very much! :D

I have an update on my progress. I have finished editing ANH together and it is encoding to MPEG2 / DD 2.0 AC3 as I type. Once that is done I will be ready to start authoring the ANH DVD.

Murry Sparkles as the only person besides myself with a copy of my '97 SE what did you think to the menus I put together for that release? I have an idea for what I am going to do for the menus on this release but I need some help.

Does anyone know where I can find high quality, preferably widescreen versions of the original trailers for the '77 '80 and '83 releases (ANH, ESB, ROTJ)? Any and all help is appreciated!

I am open to not having menus at all, although I think I would prefer to have them then not. :)

Thank you all for your input and feedback. :)

I have just spent a little time taking a second look at the different versions I have produced in the last week or so. Generally when it comes to filtering my policy is usually less is more! While taking my second look I realised I was comparing the wrong outputs, so I decided to do a comparison of the Anamorphic PAL MPEG2 files. I am so pleased I did because they showed that the filtering is in the end unnecessary. By the time the unfiltered picture has been scaled up and encoded as MPEG2 the jaggies have been sufficiently suppressed. :D

The conclusion from all this seems obvious, I will be leaving the picture unfiltered.

As someone in PAL land It does seem like the only time Lucas gave us a good OUT release was in '77, '80 and '83 in the theatres. Prior to 1995 the picture was grainy and dirty, after 1995 the picture was on the soft side (DVNR?) and there were jaggies.

Thanks for the input myscamore, no need to apologise I didn't mean to sound like I was having a go. :)

Hi myscamore,

The latest filter I am using is the "Too Much Too Soon" 'Reduce Flicker' filter for Final Cut Pro. Here is a brief description of the filter from the authors website:

Reduce Flicker
Same as Blend Fields, but only blends where there's interlace artifacts. Useful for removing flicker in text and still images while preserving as much sharpness as possible.

Blend Fields
This does the exact same thing as the famous "double deinterlace filmlook method," but it renders *a lot* faster.

As I have previously mentioned I am doing all this work on my iMac so avisynth is not an option for me.

EDIT: I seem to remember reading somewhere that the picture in this release was always a bit on the soft side, although to my eye it looks just as sharp and clear as my '97 SE LDs. Either way I have no plans to mess with the sharpness levels beyond fixing the jaggies as best I can.

As far as colour goes these stills are not representative of the film as a whole which to my eye looks again just as good as my '97 SE LDs (quality not actual colours) and a big improvement on the GOUT! Therefore I have no plans to mess with the colours.
