***The Blaksvn-Torrentz Release Thread***
Time
Are the Harry Potter TV-edits similar to ADM's edits? If the TV-edits just incorporated the deleted scenes that were included on the DVDs, the ADM-edits (having higher quality and the full widescreen format) would be the ones to prefer, and there wouldn't be a reason to have the full-screen TV-edits, right? What exactly are the differences, if there are any?

Remember, the man is not stupid. He is a brilliant marketing genius. First he will sell this release, then a remastered one, then a Blu-Ray one, etc.

I'm not sure about that... I still think that this release is going to be his alibi. If they sell well, he'll say "You got what you want, now quit the whining.". If they don't sell well, he'll say "See, no one wants them."...

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time
Why is it even necessary to capture a new video-track? Aside from a German crawl there are several great transfers out there to be used for this, spearheaded (imho) by Moth3r's version and the X0 (when it's done). So, shouldn't this project focus more on getting a decent German crawl in front of those already existing transfers, plus hi-quality German audio?

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
Looks really promising I must say.

But still, there are some things that are bothering me:

- First of all, the voice work is great, but I as well would vote for a little higher pitch

- The main problem is the SOUND of the newly dubbed lines... especially in the first Anakin/Amidala scene your new line doesn't sound like it's in the same space as Amidala's... it sounds more like a voice-over than an actual ADR. I'm not sure since the music is rather loud in that part of the trailer, but I guess it has to do with too much reverb being added and the lack of ambient sound and foley. Trying to filter the sounds differently and adding some minimal ambient "hum" or "noise" would be enough, plus some foley sound of rustling clothes and slight footsteps on carpet to sell the illusion even better. Foley sounds can be found in the sound files of a lot of games... if you want I could look for some. (the C-3P0 shot shows how defining ambient sound can be, since it suddenly stops when a new "source" is used)

- There are a few contrast problems... the moonlight scene's contrast is way too high, making it too dark. If you look at movies using day-for-night shots, you do see some details in the mid-range. The droid factory-scene (though color wise just perfect) is a little too dark as well... you might want to raise the level of the mid range, keeping the blacks where they are, but giving a little more detail in the darker areas. Generally your contrast levels are a bit inconsisent, especially comparing some of the original EPII-shots, and your color corrected ones... your's are generally too dark.

So, I hope you don't mind this nitpicking, after all you wanted criticism

Back to the Future as one film (Released)
Time
I don't think a chronological edit of the films is enjoying, since going back and forth through time is the most fun part of the trilogy... especially the idea of travelling from the second film back to the first one is just awesome!

As for editing the three movies together, it's actually quite simple. The transition from I to II is easy as hell, since the ending of the first film repeats at the beginning of the second one (right before Marty opens the garage and Jennifer enters the scene... this way the switch between Claudia Wells and Elisabeth Shue isn't that distracting). Cutting out the credits in II works too... I cut from Biff's line about "A flying DeLorean...?" right to the the trio re-entering Hill Valley 2015 (with a little sound editing to remove the beginning and end of the main theme). As II and III were shot back to back, editing them together works like a charm, and with a little AfterEffects knowledge painting out the titles from III can be done.

Yet I would advise doing this as an XviD or DivX edit on DL-DVD... most players play these files, and you won't have a noticable loss in image quality.

John Williams' Music

Just what I wanted to say... in fact all three "Battle of Endor"-cues form the best music that can be found in ROTJ. Still, I like TESB's soundtrack the best... the Hoth-battle, Yoda, Han & Leia... it can't be beaten.

Regarding the prequels I still think "Across the Stars" is the thing I like most. Oddly enough, considering that it's just a rip-off of Williams' own "Hook"-theme. But still, when I heard "Confrontation with Count Dooku & Finale" (and that was BEFORE I saw the movie), including the Imperial March, I had a film running in front of my mind's eye, that was just the PERFECT Episode 2... no cheesy crap, but a VERY dark and sinister end battle, with a proper emotional factor.

I agree that the PT didn't have many outstanding themes though... I didn't even like "Battle of the Heroes" that much, it was just too similar to "Duel of Fates", and a little to simple for my taste.

Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)

Here are some comparison shots between the crawl of the German THX version and the German 1997SE:

http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/3810/thx10ps.jpg

http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/2026/se19nw.jpg

As the THX-release was only released on Video and LD, and being years before 16:9-TVs, I guess the misplacement of the intro-text wasn't this obvious on 4:3 screens.

http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/9653/se25yk.jpg

http://img466.imageshack.us/img466/130/thx53yi.jpg

http://img332.imageshack.us/img332/660/se58rq.jpg

The quality of the THX-crawl is really horrible... the perspective of the text isn't right, compared to the perspective of the complete crawl, and there's still a typo ("nach Haus" instead of "nach Hause" as in the SE-crawl). Also, the crawl has been created interlaced, since those versions were only released on TV-media (VHS and LD), and progressive TV-sets or beamers didn't exist back then.

Coming to "Das Imperium schlägt zurück" and "Die Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter", their THX-crawls look just as crappy as the ANH one:

http://img70.imageshack.us/img70/4221/esbthx7as.jpg

http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/935/rotjthx7os.jpg

The SE titles though show something interesting... here are all three:

ANH
http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/9653/se25yk.jpg

TESB
http://img501.imageshack.us/img501/3205/esblogo3ma.jpg

ROTJ
http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/9278/rotjlogo8bn.jpg

Obviously the title-cards for both "Imperium" and "Jedi" weren't created with as much care as the one for ANH (and it looks like the same one has been used for TESB and ROTJ, with just some color variation). The same applies to the crawls:

http://img282.imageshack.us/img282/8931/esbcrawl4mz.jpg

http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/4740/rotjcrawl5ma.jpg

Though this time the chapter name "Das Imperium schlägt zurück" isn't mispelled as in the original crawl from 1980 as "züruck", it says "Tattuin" instead of "Tatooine" in the "Jedi"-crawl, though I am not sure how it was spelled in the 1983 crawl.

Info & Help: Looking for... Raiders Of The Lost Ark - on HDTV
Time
Bringing this thread I up again, I just wanted to let you know that alt.binaries.hdtv.repost currently has "Raiders" (both in 720p and 1080p HDTV) and "Temple" (in 720p) up. I didn't bother downloading more than just a snippet of "Temple", and since it's just 720p it doesn't look noticably better than the DVD (and the DVD-quality of the trilogy is stunning enough to ditch 720p). Plus I don't know which version of "Temple" it is.

I have an HD-version of "Raiders" for quite a while now, but first of all it's 1080p instead of 1080i, and it's not cut for swear-words... it's still "I'm you god damn partner"... plus the little errors, like the cobra's reflection in the sheet of glass, are gone, so I guess this is the HD-source that was used for the DVD-transfers.

The Most Boring Commentator Ever
Time
The only SW-commentary I've took the time to listen to was EP1, since it was the first SW-DVD ever to be released (how thrilled i was!)... I thought it was quite interesting, but back then I was just so happy to have ANY SW-movie on DVD that I didn't mind GL glorifiying CG as much (after all I work as a CG-guy, so this IS a cool thing... but not when it's going out of control like in GL's hands).

The most boring commentary I've ever heard was the Farelli's "Me, Myself & Irene"... it basically consists of nothing more than "That guy in the background ist my uncle... and that girl left of that building is my sister's ex college-roomate... oh, and that couple on the right is my brother-in-law and my wife..." I GOT IT!

Really funny commentaries are made by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (the "Orgazmo" one is just classic... the booze-level rises with each minute of the film). Funny: Bruce Campbell's "Evil Dead 2" bashing in his commentary... I still have to listen to his "King"-commentary on Bubba Ho-Tep.

Funny AND damn interesting: All commentaries by Kevin Smith... and basically most interviews and articles he does...
