Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)
Time

I was thinking about re-doing the German crawl digitally in HD... using the German logo from Empire (it's the same as in Jedi) and the pan down + the rest of the shot from an English HD source. Of course, the crawl would probably look too clean, but it's the only option for an HD crawl right now, I guess.

Edit:
D'oh, redoing the crawl wouldn't be necessary of course... I could just use the upcoming Blu-ray crawl plus the "Krieg der Sterne"-logo from Empire.

As an less OT-focused alternative, we could simply put the ANH-SE "Krieg der Sterne"-logo in front of all three Blu-ray crawls, as that one is way cleaner and fits the new crawls a bit better.

Laserschwert, what makes you think, that the Jedi crawl is an SD-upscale? Can I verify this on my sources? Maybe I got something else here!? The .TS stream did look quite impressive on my 42" display.

It's pretty easy to spot, so if yours looks good, it's probably not an upscale. Here's a comparison:

ANH crawl
TESB crawl
ROTJ crawl (with interlacing and everything)

it becomes even clearer once the camera pans down to the Death Star:

Death Star

The next shot (and the rest of the movie) is in HD though:

Shuttle

All three end credits though are in English... is that different in your versions?

EDIT
I've started downloading your Usenet-upload... we'll see! ;)

EDIT 2
Ah damn, didn't realize you've uploaded only the SD crawls for now...

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

I found these:

The bottom of the tin has a holder, while the inside of the lid has some foam padding, so the discs is fixated on the nub. Although I'm wondering how you get the disc out of the tin... if the edges are too high, you won't be able to get your fingers under the disc.

Also I can't think of a way to put them on a shelf without simply stacking them... not too fancy, I guess.

I was thinking about making DVD-covers for Puggo's transfers, but then I thought of a more appropriate way to store the discs... CD tins (unlike the ones below there are some types that have a hub in the middle to actually hold the disc):

Granted, I don't know anything about 16 mm film, so I have no idea what information is actually on those labels (even Google's image search wasn't too helpful with that). It's just an idea though. Here are the labels at full size (about two inches in diameter when printed at 300dpi):

Well, ANH's crawl was definitely re-created for the 1997 SE, as before that only the crappy-cheap-video-effects crawl of the THX-version had the "Episode IV" in it.

Empire's 1997 crawl is probably the same as in 1980, as (except from the moved Umlaut in "ZURÜCK") they look identical... funnily enough though, the German HD-broadcast (with the 2004 transfer) uses the uncorrected 1980 crawl.

And I have no idea, why Jedi's crawl of the 2004-HD-broadcasts is just an upscale... did they have an old German 35mm print of Empire, but not for Jedi?

Sadly since the 2004 DVDs all German crawls have been re-created completely, and it especially bothers me that they replaced the "Krieg der Sterne" logos with "Star Wars", so I'd like to at least have all of those in HD alongside the Blu-rays.

I can settle with the 1997 crawl for ANH (since it 1. has a German logo and 2. it's probably impossible to get the original crawl in HD), and I have the 1980 crawl of Empire in HD. Jedi is the only one missing here.

EDIT:
All right, I found a lot of info on Schnittberichte.com (ANH, TESB, ROTJ), and some interesting bits, like different "A long time ago..."-cards.

ANH:

TESB:

ROTJ:

They were all unified in the SEs to this:

It's really strange that the wording was changed for Jedi.

Also the German Jedi-SE seems to at least use the original crawl from 1983, although image geometry is changed and warped a bit (at least on the Schnittbericht-screenshots). Maybe it was recomposed for the SE using the original footage of the German crawl?

Who made the international crawls anyway? Was it ILM themselves?

Does anybody here have the original German crawl from "Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter" in HD? I don't know if there was ever a German HD-broadcasts of the 1997 version of the film (and the German HD-version that uses the 2004 transfer only has an SD upscale of the crawl in front of it).

Also can anybody here capture and upload the pre-THX German crawls from Empire and Jedi (as the screens earlier in this thread show, the THX-crawls looked awful)? I'd like to know if they're the same as the ones from the 1997 SEs (I know that at least the ANH-crawl was redone for the 1997 release).

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

I took another look at the HDTV broadcasts of the 2004 transfer, and in some scenes the sharpening made by Lowry doesn't look that good. It worked once scaled down to DVD resolution, but in HD it gives the image too much of a "painted" effect. I hope the new transfers omit this sharpening...

Well, at least I think it's that sharpening Lowry talks about in the Saving Star Wars article (no edge enhancement artifacts, a desription that fits the way the HDTV broadcasts were sharpened).
