Preserving the "German" Original Trilogy (Released)

Haven't thought about the credits yet... since only SW has German ones, I might just as well leave them in English. Or I'll recreate them completely.

Also the quality of the shot differs BECAUSE it's a different generation (since the wipe was done optically back then). Actually this should be true for all wipes in the movies (before they were re-composited for the SEs).

this was posted from quad73 at the mf.com forums:

matt wood talks blu-ray changes.

Wood talks about the vader-no, however gives whole responsibilty for this change to GL. It is JEJ voice.

He really comes off as a great guy, especially having to smirk about not knowing the intentions of George's changes... and of course his "I just work here!"-attitude. You gotta give him the fact that it must be awesome to work at Skywalker Sound (with them editing other shows than Star Wars), and he certainly can't bash Lucas if he wants to keep that job.

Damn, had I known that! :D

What font did you use for the crawls? Trade Gothic seems to be the closest to the classic crawls...

And if you DO manage to fit the German Blu-ray audio to Harmy's versions, be sure to share those too ;-) I was planning on doing it myself, but I thought the voice would be only in the center channel (and thus easier to swap out), but obviously they're in the R and L channels as well.

Anyway, HERE's me re-construction for the German intro to Empire. (Yay for "ZÜRUCK"! ;) )

And HERE's a little tweaked version of the SW opening as well (no transparent "KRIEG DER STERNE" letters, better fades)

Sorry, I didn't meant to be disrespectful. I totally love what you've done, but until now I thought I were just making these for myself. ;-)

I think it will make sense if we combine our efforts here, right?

Again, I'm sorry if I came off rude, that wasn't my intention!

What exactly is fixed in Luffy03's German dub? I was thinking of using the cleaned up Blu-ray voice tracks (center channels, I guess) to make a new German track (they've cleaned up the original German voice recordings from ANH for the Blu-ray and remixed the other two as well and they sound stellar!)

Here's my 720p reconstruction of the German opening:

http://www.mediafire.com/?gxy2rjf8snum5np

It's based on Harmy's version, so the Fox logo and the space background and anything after the crawl is from his version. I've re-created the Lucasfilm logo (but I'm not convinced it had to be squished like it was in the VHS release) and the "Es war einmal..." card. For the crawl I've used the SE-version (which was used in the 2004-HDTV broadcast), where I've removed the "Episode IV - NEUE HOFFNUNG" lines. Also I've spaced out the paragraphs a bit more, as they were in the theatrical crawl.

Yeah, screenshots would be good enough. I took the timing from Puggo Grande, so I just need those screens to see the wording and line breaks.

Right now it looks like this:

Of course right now I'm using the new German spelling (a lot of "ss" instead of "ß") as well es the "Du" instead of "du". The Sat1-version used "Du" and the likes ("Dich", "Deine", ...), while the DVD uses "du". I'm not sure which way to go...

Does anybody have any shots of the German theatrical (well, pre-THX) Greedo and Jabba subtitles? I need some reference regarding font (right now I'm using Trade Gothic, which I'll probably stick to) but also placement and wording (which was changed a lot during all releases). The VHS-ones on Greedo are especially bad, so I won't need those...

After seeing all the positive comments about your work, I couldn't resist any longer, freed some space on my hard drive and dl'd your DeEd. And it truly is fantastic, Harmy, excellent job!

Hey Harmy,

I really love your Despecializations! Since I'm German I want to create versions with the German crawls and German subs for Greedo and Jabba. Are there HDTV-versions of the subtitled scenes, but without the subs? Or did the subtitles look like that in the HD broadcasts? I'd like to re-create the German subs as they look in the US version, but I'd need clean versions of those scenes for that...

The next hurdle will be multi-angle / seamless branching or some other trick to allow choosing between the English and the German crawls and subs (and Adobe Encore, which I'm using, doesn't support either feature). Well, at least the subs COULD be realized through actual Blu-ray subtitles... but for that, again, I need clean versions of those scenes.

Otherwise the new Blu-rays might provide the solutions...

I'm doing something similar, I'm trying to recreate the italian crawl in HD, episode-less, and then I'd need the Greedo scene without hard-subs, to make my own. But then, how to incorporate them in the movie, without having to re-encode? I'm pretty much clueless about HD and blu-rays and whatnot...

Yeah, I guess there's no other option than a re-encode. Also I guess I won't be able to make a multi-angle disc (for having both the English AND German crawls and subtitles), so I'll probably take the cheap route of putting the movie on the disc twice. After all the AVCHD-versions are small enough to fit on a BD25 disc twice with enough space left to re-encode at a higher bitrate and still allow multiple audio-options.

Yeah, there is no HDTV broadcast without hardcoded subs, I had to remove them using the DVDs. But I'm sure the BD will be a better solution.

Oh, actually your result looks pretty much perfect to me... would it be possible for you to share the upscaled and color corrected versions without the subtitles of the Greedo and Jabba scenes? It would make it so much easier for me to seamlessly replace them...
