Okay, so without anything better to do, I watched the workprint and wrote down some notes!

• I don’t think I entirely get the removal of the Snoke line (is it to not cheapen his character as much?)
• The wipe to Rey and the wipe to the Falcon feel fanedity and like they don’t quite fit. Perhaps a different sort of transition, especially to Rey?
• these are probably just technical issues, but Rey’s “ugh” modification, and the transition from the falcon back to Rey are imperfect
• I support adding the squeaky wheel scene shots from the documentary
• Is there any way to still have the Chewie arriving on the star destroyer scene somewhere? I mean, it is kind of redundant, especially as I like the reveal to be moved to where it is now, but
• Kylo saying “power” stands out in the hangar scene. Although, it may be related to the overall workprint audio quality. I remember really liking Rogueleader’s take on it by the way
• Leia’s “come home” also could use work. I feel bad listing technical issues just because they haven’t been refined yet, but there you go
• DOTF being included to the extent that it has I am conflicted about, but I guess it’s a good addition
• I sort of didn’t realize that you were including Leia’s purple saber in your edit, and that was a very pleasant surprise. Although when Rey uses it, it looks pink for some reason.
• Speaking of colours, is an un-blue-ening of Exogol going to take place?
• I made a note about how I am not sure but I think you spliced parts of the Resistance battle together and it works wonders to keep me caring about what’s going on up there
• Beaumont’s mouth opens, only for Palpatine to speak. Just thought that was funny
• Well, including the moneyshot with all the ships which was sliced up originally (the extended ILM shot) is fantastic, but you do sacrifice a line from Poe
• “I’m no one” just doesn’t resonate with me. “I’m all the Jedi” is dumb, but this one elicited a “wait, huh?” at a moment that is supposed to be epic. I don’t know what to do about that. Maybe it’s also that the delivery of it is the way it is. I understand the sentiment behind this change, but, well… maybe “I’m a Jedi”? idk
• I didn’t have a strong conviction about this before, but now I think Ben should never have died. We needed a character who is on the redemption path but doesn’t immediately die without atonement. It’s cheap. But anyway, I don’t know how one would pull that off with the footage available and stuff, or if you even want to
• Idk I kinda care about (the citizens of) Naboo more than Coruscant, especially as in canon Coruscant becomes kind of rubbish (not actually sure about this but anyway), so maybe consider using the fan-made Naboo shot instead of Coruscant? Just my opinion
• Poe-Zori moment at the end was funny and I miss it
• Lando-Jannah moment at the end was weird and I don’t miss it

This movie has a problem with usage of music and I have some more notes about that:

• Emperor’s theme plays during the Resistance briefing, which on the one hand you may think makes sense because they’re talking about him, BUT that theme tends to imply his (direct) influence, like in this case that their actions, decisions are under his control, which makes it confused and not quite appropriate (at least to me. I also listened to a podcast which mentioned this)
• Poe’s theme plays when Jannah says hi to our heroes. Weird usage of that.
• Force theme plays when Lando appears, which… eh, maybe it’s the Rebel theme now
• Luke and Leia plays at the celebration. It was there before, and out of context, and you’ve now cut out the Lando-Jannah moment, but the theme is still there, and still out of context.

While I don’t think Ben should have gotten a ghost, since him not having one implies his state is different from that of Leia and Luke, like perhaps he lives in Rey or something, and I’m split on which take of Rey Skywalker to use, otherwise your Tattoine epilogue is great!

I am waiting patiently to be able to see this in high video and audio quality!

I would also like to see it. I’ll give some feedback if necessary

Yes, that’s another one! I’ve been able to fit that in quite well with my limited editing skills, but I sacrificed Wedge’s cameo. I might post some clips of my takes on some of these extensions later.

Yes exactly! While the New Republic era is interesting and all, there is already going to be enough material about that… I want to see what happens next.

I want to ask y’all whether anyone you know of has completed/attempted extended versions of these movies using the available deleted scenes. Here’s what I’ve been able to find out so far:

The Force Awakens: There have been efforts to remove the timecodes present in the deleted scenes by members of this community that are admirable and very appreciated. I am wondering if anyone has put together an edit that reincorporates these scenes (with work done to remove the timecodes or without), and in addition doesn’t put the Jakku Message scene in between Finn’s face reveal and Rey’s intro (there’s a wonderful visual transition there from one face to another face that it’d be a shame to lose)

The Last Jedi: ebumms has a wonderful TLJ extended edit that is ifdb approved if I remember correctly… not everything is featured but considering the wealth of substantive deleted scenes released for that movie and the lack of any annoying black bar overlayed on the image (meaning the scenes are usable in fanedits without applying any sfx), it has been accomplished in my book, so that’s settled.

The Rise of Skywalker: the reality is that 0 deleted scenes are available. With that said, certain faneditors on this forum have done marvelous work to extend certain sequences in service of a fanedit, e.g., Mustafar establishing shots conjured using volcano footage, forest footage and sfx (that looks very believable, mind you), reinstating some “squeaky wheel” shots from BtS footage, and some others. I am wondering whether anybody is interested in editing the movie purely with the aim of extending it with this kind of thing. I myself have put together such an edit (I also used the civilian fleet chatter you might have heard used in Hal’s edit, double rainbow, alternate Rey Skywalker take, alternate final shot, and other things that I believe only contribute things to the film, as opposed to taking things out). However this kinda only exists as a proof of concept project in the video editor, as because of my current technical limitations, I am not able to export said edit, and I also used a source of inferior picture quality (my computer can’t handle it otherwise), but I feel it can be done and it can be cool!

Thus, I am wondering whether this community is as interested in this concept of extended editions of the ST as I am.

Spinoff-prequel-spinoffs… As much as I like the sequels, it does feel now in retrospect like they’ve played that card perhaps too soon, because now the way forward seems to be for the most part to milk the OT era, with most of these live action shows being set either a couple years before the OT or a couple years after. And pretty much none of these are really “main story”. If the sequels didn’t exist (though I’m glad they do), perhaps now would be time to move forward the main story in the Mando era, but their hands are kinda tied, aren’t they? Like really, I’m glad there will be something for almost everyone, but how much time can you spend telling stories within the same timeframe? This was the running joke a few years ago, but then they canceled a bunch of stuff, but now I guess every piece of furniture getting a prequel spinoff actually will be a thing!

I agree about a Rey series, but it seems they are distancing themselves from the sequel era after all… my heart cries at the lack of any word on a Rian Johnson trilogy/movie/series.

The episode was amazing. Even as someone who doesn’t really care all that much about Clone Wars/Rebels, seeing Ahsoka was 100% worth the hype, and in general this show is gorgeous, loved the old samurai movie influence. I was also breathless when she mentioned Thrawn. I know we’ve had new books with him, and Rebels, but hearing his name in live action star wars, post-ROTJ, right around the time Heir to the Empire takes place… it just hits different. I hope we get to see him

That’s right, the idea is heavily teased, but they do sort of have a (definitive?) falling out at the end, or at least it could be taken that way (wasn’t, of course).

I remembered another one. People were saying that they sure hope that it gets explained where Luke’s blue lightsaber came from in TFA. I knew right away that they weren’t going to do that (in a movie), because it doesn’t matter. Another another one, the snoke theories were crazy after TFA. Plagueis was one of the most popular ones, and I thought there was basically no way that would end up being the case.

Ditto on calling Rey being a nobody-whose-parents-literally-just-abandoned-her after TFA. Also kinda called Reylo after TLJ, but in retrospect it’s a not-so-good Disney trope which is unfortunate. Luke’s story… kinda. After the TLJ teaser it was clear where they were going with it, but already in TFA he had a telling face if that makes sense.

I think the only thing more confusing to me than putting TLJ last are people who like the sequels and put TLJ as the worst of the three. You’re the former of these two confusing cases, but I am curious, have you rewatched it since it came out?

Although my first thought was about how, if I recall correctly, the script really butchers Poe and tries to sell ReyxPoe with the standard Trevorrow ‘serious “uptight” girl x immature “goofball” guy’ dynamic which is the only kind of romance he seems to know how to write. I’m biased, as I prefer Reylo (though perhaps without an actual romance?). So, annoyingly, I don’t think the script is an absolute improvement over what we got. And anyway, in a way it’s odd to adapt the entirety of such a flawed first draft, but sticking to it does make it more “official” I guess.

I wish, even just to preserve a “definitely could-have-been” ala Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, it could get released in an actually official capacity.

I don’t know, it seems from the supplementary material that the FO is straight up burning down places that have shown to have any ties whatsoever to the resistance and also Leia is changing bases like socks, even more often than the rebellion. Moreover, the bases seem to be almost exclusively on planets without civilised governments. Naboo is the sort of world that they would be found on immediately. Of course, you could ignore that and imply a different power dynamic, where the war is less one-sided

I like this but I think somehow making Snoke make sense for this IX would be far better than reusing the emperor, maybe imply that snoke is the emperor somehow?

Bravo! This is the closest thing we are going to get to a special edition of the sequels. Lucasfilms wishes they could have delivered something this epic for the ending. Can’t wait to see this integrated into the final film with Leia’s purple lightsaber.

This got me thinking, is someone working on exactly this - not a fanfix, but just the actual movie amplified with small changes such as these? Other changes would include the sort of shot extension that Dom has been working on to slow the pace by a few seconds, ending shot with the falcon flying off into the sunset, D-O extended squeaky wheel scene,… but no actual deletions of scenes/lines, however disagreeable they are

You know, this bit, I’m assuming, is from the end credits of TFA or possibly TLJ, and when I read you would be replacing the music, this specific bit is exactly what I had in mind, and you’ve shown it to fit brilliantly, well done!

Hal had great points about the hillarious implications of Rey killing her parents. I guess it’s just such a core piece of the plot, perhaps a more conservative approach is apt after all for now, though it is unfortunate

So upon further thought, having Rey as the killer makes the most sense to me now, as you can still have her parents having “sold her for drinking money” as well as “dead in the jakku desert”, but what happened was she was upset about it and she killed them and didn’t remember it until this movie?
