Man, we should have got Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX. That showed how Rey could be the perfect balance of anger, sadness, fear, love and the rest of it. We would have finally got that issue sorted out!
Exactly why I consider that script my canon episode IX. Interestingly also, because of the many writers’ different interpretations, some have, counter to Lucas, also suggested pretty much what Trevorrow did (DOTJ, if I’m not misremembering), that the PT jedi were flat out wrong in their dogma. Perhaps those heading the story group disagree… 😕 Hopefully this doesn’t derail the thread, ha
…In retrospect, I got my curiosity get the better of me
Do share
I haven’t had the energy to talk about this movie at all lately. But here’s something: does Anakin’s voice say “bring back the balance, as I did”? or something to that effect? because that always struck me as an awful line. He didn’t bring back crap
The 4K projects have caused some confusion in this regard – i.e. if you want one sort of color correction, you go with 1.4, but if you want another sort of color correction, go with 1.6, and so on. All of the 4Kxx “versions” are at least potentially active branches.
Is there a page where those kind of differences hve been highlighted?
In the other Ady version it is Ponda Baba’s arm but the one on the ANH costume
For what it’s worth, I as an audience member thought, in both versions, official and Asc v1, that his “kill me and save your friends” was totally irrelevant to anything that concerned Rey in that moment and also I feel like she just wouldn’t do it just because it’s suspicious that he would want her to, even if she doesn’t know about spirit transfer - and it feels that way especially because we do. So I think sherlock’s suggestion is brilliant.
And also for what it’s worth, I disagree with several key changes that Hal has been insistent upon, and I understand his reasoning nonetheless. So while of course it ultimately comes down to him, I have mostly seen great arguments in favour of sherlock’s suggestions, and, after all, it’s just an alternative version to a greatly flawed movie
I agree that it should be the original arm.
Actually, what does that even mean lol… The original costume arm, not the anh insert shot-rogue one arm
I think this is a non issue. It doesn’t change the movie and alot of people wouldn’t give it a second thought
It caught me completely off guard and took me out of it, honestly. To be clear, I think this change is not a bad idea, and I think the soul possession should remain, it’s just that the hangar scene should be modified so that this makes more sense. (If that line is not in the nobody version I don’t care as much tho 😄)
EDIT: sherlock may be right again 😕
Another thing I noticed: Kylo says “we’ll kill him and take the throne” to Rey (hangar), but doesn’t he already know, in this version, that killing him means spirit transfer?
So I was going over the v1 changelog again. I don’t know exactly what the discussion was around this back when the change was made, but here is something that bugged me: regarding Rey’s necklace being analyzed and then the trooper identifying our gang on Pasaana.
This was changed to: random trooper yells freeze at our gang for no reason (he doesn’t identify them as resistance fugitives. I guess they don’t look like natives, but still struck me as very odd, not having established that the FO knows their whereabouts), followed by the Lando scene being broken in two by the “we’ve identified the necklace” scene. I don’t really see how this benefits pacing honestly, and it kinda makes less sense because of what I said earlier, and (a minor thing) we have two shots of our gang running that previously had the “we’ve identified the necklace” scene between them, but now are kinda awkwardly stitched together.
What are y’all’s thoughts on this?
Trevorrow’s script did nothing to ever answer that question. JJ returned and found an answer that fit beautifully with both existing films. When you look at the details of the stories, nothing in TROS conflicts or contradicts or rewrites anything in TLJ.
Totally disagree about the latter, but, and not that that’s flawless, DOTF absolutely does answer that question, although it retcons TLJ, as does TROS. Also, TLJ answers that question.
RE:Sherlock
This community never ceases to amaze me. Make it so!
I… mention why, in the comment you quoted. And others in this thread do as well.
You know what my understanding of it was ever since I saw that “dagger outlining the death star wreckage” moment in a theater?
There is the implication that it is an ancient sith dagger. There is the fact that it is completely ridiculous even by TROS standards that whoever made it would go all the way to the wreckage and shape the dagger the way the wreckage is shaped from that angle. There is the fact that Star Wars is mythical and has prophecies and premonitions and other such fantasy stuff.
So I have always just assumed (I don’t know what canon has to say), that it is ancient and the stars alligned that way because something something in-universe poetry, something something the force. It was never a logistics problem. For that matter, why did Palpatine store his pyramid macguffin in a side room on the death star throne room? That moment was also surreal to me. Perhaps he planned to rule from the death star going forward, instead of Coruscant? But anyway, out of all “wait what?” moments in TROS, the dagger-wreckage one is at least pretty neat. And also I like the idea that it was constructed long before the death star.
Exciting! The plural of nebula is nebulae, by the way
So uh, I disagree completely, but one of the things I feel I should mention, Poe was absolutely not second in command. D’Acy certainly outranked him, and she seemed informed of the plan. And Holdo ‘engaged hostilities’ with Poe because Poe killed their entire bomber squad by disobeying orders. This ain’t too complicated. I don’t think we’re meant to infer that Holdo’s leadership was excellent, but ‘a fascist and draconian head of state’? What?
I agree
Can’t speak for them, but, personally, the fairly conservative, (almost?) purely additive approach
So I’m watching the first episode, and I kinda feel like the part at the beginning where they meet Ventress and the subsequent transition to the movie material is not really… necessary? I’m noting this down while I haven’t watched the entire episode yet (update, I finished it), but I guess it’s there to introduce Ventress, right? But I think the way Ani and Obi are introduced in the movie is very particular and the material from the prior episode kind of makes the geography and their situation… confusing. The setup for what situation they are in and what is happening gets a reset anyway once we go to the star destroyer, so my personal feedback is that the material between the cold open+blue text and the first star destroyer scene where they talk about their communications issue… is sort of just cluttery? And the Bail moments, for that matter, fall along the same lines. I think it just makes things confusing for someone who has never watched the show.
But I also don’t think that straight up omitting that stuff is necessarily the best idea. If I recall correctly, you plan on having a plot element resurface in a later episode. I wonder if I’m the only one with this particular problem with it then.
in no particular order
The Heir to the Empire trilogy
the Mara Jade comics
Dark Empire is fascinating, even though it’s kinda off the rails
so is Crimson Empire, even though it’s dated
2D Clone Wars
never finished Hand of Thrawn, only fully read the first book, was ok
Dawn of the Jedi comics!
This is a wonderful concept! I agree it would be interesting to think of these stories like that, especially if it’s official.
But Star Wars fans, and Western consumers of media in general, are religiously (no pun intended) obsessed with the notion of canon, and what’s canon or not, sometimes more than they even enjoy consuming the media itself. So it’s impossible.
Same here ! 😃
