The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

You know, I’m pretty burned out on this movie, I’m still heartbroken over how it leaves the universe with a whole load of nothing, but I hope everybody who worked on this feels accomplished, because this thing you all have created from TROS is definitely a grand accomplishment and I’m so glad to have witnessed it happening real time 😃

And I feel like it’s fixable by having his underlying motive be to exploit the power of their Force Dyad all along.

What somehow makes more sense and is also even more of a head scratcher is the fact that that kinda was the idea during the writing (editing?) stage…

JEDIT:
Also, I understand that it is settled and binned šŸ˜„, but just in case I was not clear in my force ghost post, this was my ultimate suggestion:

what are people’s thoughts on having JUST BEN as a force ghost for that shot, replacing Mark and Carrie entirely

Also, can I just say how much I appreciate Hal providing the community with just about the maximum possible amount of the ā€˜fanedit resources’ he used for his edit, all in an accessible place for other editors to utilize? Just helps highlight the collaboration of it.

I don’t know if this is the right thread, but a thought I had recently about Ben’s ghost:

This idea never quite sat right with me, and I now realize it isn’t just because it breaks the ā€œtwin sunsā€ symmetry… And I think in principle, having Ben’s ghost is a good idea. In Jedi, Luke and his dad have a one-on-one convo before he dies. Then, when he sees the ghosts hanging out, he’s looking at his former masters and someone who belongs in their generation (much older than Luke). Three old guys who are dead, that each taught Luke something, in a way.

Rey and Ben on the other hand, are contemporaries! They also didn’t have a conversation before Ben died. So to me it seems weird that she’s looking off at her former masters AND Ben, who, really, doesn’t quite ā€œbelongā€ in the afterlife. If anything, it would seem more appropriate that Luke+Leia and Ben appear to her separately (I’m not suggesting this, because it would not really be possible to implement). Vader gets to die with some dignity after leading most of his life as an evil murderer. This isn’t Ben’s story. As per the movie, Rey and Kylo are two that are one. They share an spiritual intimacy (per the movie!) that I think is broken by the three-Skywalker shot. It just seems so distant. ā€œForget all that dyad stuff, Rey, I’m hanging out with my mom and uncle now, byeeeā€

Again, might not be the right thread, but with the assumption that some years down the line the edit will be revisited šŸ˜‰ … what are people’s thoughts on having JUST BEN as a force ghost for that shot, replacing Mark and Carrie entirely?? So instead of Rey getting adopted, we’d get a kind of force marriage?

Episode IX
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Supreme Leader Kylo Ren has traveled to Mustafar in search of a hidden power that would allow him to destroy any threat to his rule over the First Order.

Guarded by the fearsome creature THE WEBBISH BOG, the elusive Sith Wayfinder would lead the way to their homeworld.

With the Webbish Bog’s warning about Kylo Ren discovering his true self on the path ahead, he has begun to slaughter the Wayfinder’s ancient guardians…

Ah, the old [footage missing] workaround!

I feel like I have to counterbalance this with my own view which is that I concur with what has been said before: those two shots, as they are currently, don’t flow from one to the other, particularly the forest is not apparent in the castle shot. I like the 3 shot one better, although it isn’t perfect. But from what I remember, most planets get like 3 establishing shots in this movie (or at least several) anyway

But they were nobody. Even TROS confirms that

It certainly wants you to believe that. But if you found out that one of your parents (parents who died when you were little and apparently led unremarkable lives), say, your dad, was actually Hitler’s kid (or, for a more canon-accurate example, a clone of Adolf Hitler!) and gave his life to protect you from Hitler, would you really insist that your parents were nobodies? Rey certainly doesn’t

Man, we should have got Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX. That showed how Rey could be the perfect balance of anger, sadness, fear, love and the rest of it. We would have finally got that issue sorted out!

Exactly why I consider that script my canon episode IX. Interestingly also, because of the many writers’ different interpretations, some have, counter to Lucas, also suggested pretty much what Trevorrow did (DOTJ, if I’m not misremembering), that the PT jedi were flat out wrong in their dogma. Perhaps those heading the story group disagree… šŸ˜• Hopefully this doesn’t derail the thread, ha
