Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
I understand the desire for a fan edit of the complete saga with the Ranch thread but I would really like it if this fan edit did not directly contradict anything in the other movies. I don't want this promising version to require the Ranch edit of The Phantom Menace and be incompatible with the official and other fan edits. Still, I really find the new 3PO lines much more enjoyable and in character. Are there other things in this version that will not match up with the other five official films?

Idea: Has anyone done anything with the VCDs? (with project release info)
Time
One video cd that might be worth looking at is Fantasia. Apparently, I heard there was some part censored by being cropped out or awkwardly panned & scanned. It was because of racial concerns and was one of the later scenes with all the animals like the hippo. I really don't know a lot about that or how true that is. Someone selling it on epier.com said the scene was intact on the vcd.

Have there been any transfers of the existing film stocks of the ot done. Even if it was just recording a camera on a projection screen, I know this would be very valuable.

Changes you want (or don't want) to the 2007 archival editions
Time
That's a good question. Luke didn't want to fight his father but why wouldn't he try to block the emporor's lightning with his lightsaber? I don't think it was because Luke knew the prophecy said only the chosen one could bring balence to the force.

As for future changes, well it's obvious what should happen to the Greedo scene. I have compiled the 3 best proposed ideas. NOT!
Bro hug (Mad Magazine did this in their "Day in the Life of George Lucas" feature. It was the cover that had Obi Wan & Anakin shocked to see Alfred E Neuman as Palpatine)
Greedo's shot hits the wall, bounces back and hits him. Han doesn't shoot.
They settle it with rock, paper, scissors.

My letter to Entertainment Weekly, what do you guys think?
Time
You might also want to mention there was a Chicago Tribune article about this site too. Has anyone considered trying to contact through fan mail any celebrities who are known to be big fans of the movies. For example, I heard one of the hobbit actors from LotR (Dominic Monaghan?) mentioned in some interview that he hated Greedo shooting first. Matt Stone and Trey Parker made fun of Lucas and Spielberg in South Park ep 609: Free Hat. Their commentary on the season six dvd for that episode was mainly about how dissapointed with the new prequels, a feeling shared by a lot of people here. I'm sure they would love to find this site but aren't aware since they mentioned in another episode commentary (season 6) that the only way to watch the holiday special was from ebay. Come to think of it, it sounded like they thought the SWhs was good.

Problem with slow motion in Vegas
Time
The problem has definitely been able to be seen on the computer and on a tv screen from the dvd. I know what you mean by the slowing down effect with deinterlacing. That has happened to me when I have rendered an avi file in progressive scan but the video clips being rendered were interlaced. Thanks a lot for the advice. Whenever I go back home and turn on Vegas, I'll actually know what all those options are doing rather than just taking a guess.

I really like the two disc set effect. I put the bonus discs with the original movie discs in a two disc memorex case. For the supposed ultimate archival set, at the very minimum, Lucas better have everything that's on the RowMan discs plus the features from the official dvd set.

What is the extra searching for R2 scene? Was it actual footage or just recreated.

So RowMan used a dvd recorder rather than a video capture card. That might explain why I thought the vhs footage could have been better quality. What format did the THX demos come from? And RowMan, how does a s-vhs vcr compare to a vhs vcr in terms of playback of regular vhs?

Black and White Points
Time
Ok, that helps but then what's the advantage of going through the tedious process of manually adjusting black and white points if it's just the same as adjusting brightness and contrast. Does this way allow you to only adjust part of a frame and leave the rest unaffected? For example would this help the starfield become black without making Tatooine turn to a dark brown mud color?

Actually I thought, the human Jabba scene came from a variety of sources. Ocp where did you get that brief clip of the sandstorm from Jedi? And isn't the added SE scene of Vader landing on his star destroyer that has been alerted to prepare for his arrival enabling the inperial officers who serve him to begin with the procedure whose... uh... umm. Anyway, is that from a deleted scene in Jedi?

I also was wondering if RowMan modified the brightness contrast of the Faces interviews at all. I did a quick comparison between his disc and one of the "faces" tapes I borrowed from my college library. I played them on a dvd-vcr combo and found the vhs tape to have far less brightness and more contrast.

Is SVHS really worth it?
Time
I asked a similar question in the X0 eqivalent for VCR's thread but I guess they are deleted after a period of no activity. From what I've read, whether the vcr is s-vhs or just vhs probably won't make much of a difference by itself (for capturing vhs). Whether it has s-video connection or a tbc or basically whether it just plays tapes well is what should make more of a difference. Rowman's star wars bonus discs captured vhs using a JVC s-vhs machine.

Problem with slow motion in Vegas
Time
That's true. I know what you mean about the distortion. Maybe I should have made this more clear. There has always been distortion when I made something in slow motion. The thing is, it is far worse at making the intervening frame than before this summer. For example, I re-rendered an avi file of a hockey game because I wanted to fix a few things and get an s-video capture from the Hi8 video. But I basically kept the slow motion replays exactly the same. The slow motion from the newer version is much more blurry and ghosted.

Problem with slow motion in Vegas
Time
I've been very satisfied with Vegas for about a year but last year I had clips that I stretched out into slow motion look much worse and blurry than what they had before. Objects are basically ghosted in multiple areas on horizontal movement much worse than regular interlaced video. I'll try to post screenshots if I can. Does anybody have any idea what could be wrong?

Black and White Points
Time
Could someone explain to me in very basic terms what the purpose of setting black points is? Does it have advantages over just adjusting the brightness and contrast. The greedo pictures from the X0 article didn't really look that different, just that one had more contrast. Is there a screen capture frame which can show a more noticable improvement available?

Previews which automatically play before the main menu of a dvd. Just make them accessable from the menu, ok. (is there any way to disable these)

Warner and Paramount not listing the aspect ratios on their dvd's. (when they say widescreen, they don't tell you if it's 1:85 or 2:35 to 1)

The endless number of dvd releases that are advertised as "Collector's Edition" of some kind. (How many dvd releases out do you think are truely a collector's item?)

Can we send an O-OT representative to a SW convention?
Time
InfoDroid really summed it up well. I think Lucas is afraid that people would find the original films better than the "improved" ones. With all the rumors about future changes, maybe he doesn't want to release the originals at least until he considers the movies finished. As a marketer, his worst fear has got to be realeasing the originals would make a lot of people completely satisfied and feel no need for his newest version. Still, he could make a lot more money releasing the originals, even if they were only available with the special editions.

How Did You Find OT.com?
Time
Widescreen Advocacy Page. It had an animated image link of Han & Greedo with the caption "You know how this scene should end." By the way, why has the signature count been frozen at 72,000? And why won't Bill Hunt include a link from the bits when they sponsored a petition just to get the prequel movies on dvd before '06? Does he have to kiss up to Lucasfilm?

You used a JVC S-vhs machine? I know some of your souces were simply not in great quality to start with and I don't want to sound rude but I thought the vhs sourced materials did not appear to be captured using a really good vcr. For the "faces" interviews and "Making of Star Wars/ SpFx: Esb" did you capture from laserdisc or vhs?

And you knew someone who was in the underoos commericial. I can't imagine that person being very eager to lend you that tape...
