Lord of the Rings - TTT - The Re-Edited Re-Edit Book Cut! (Released)
Time
AWESOME!! The unnatural color look of all three films always bothered me. Like the star wars dvd's, it never looked natural. A good example is from the Rivendell meeting which is in gold color tone. The people almost look like they are on the Simpsons. I'm glad you are restoring the color as I think the proper term for what they did with the films should be called digital degrading. Did you try to add color where you thought it was needed or did you actually try to undo the digital grading and make it more reflective of the original film print?

Time to accept what we are given and be grateful?
Time
I think THX is correct about more resolution making it to the Pal laserdiscs. So they will no question look better, maybe even good. By today's standards for dvd, they will be terrible. Today, non anamorphic is considered just as bad as only releasing it in pan & scan. I don't think we should accept this. In fact I think we shouldn't be so willing to buy anything that says Star Wars on it, good or bad. Lucas has found a weakness with a geek fanbase and exploited it. We need to restrain ourselves so Lucas will have to create something new beyond a shiny package or new box.
An action figure can't move by itself. A box or case may be cool to look at but it just takes up space in the end. And a movie is just a movie. There really isn't much point to buying something if you already have it like many of us do. I'll probably take a wait and see approach with the new set or see if I can score it for a good price. But is it worth $20.00 for slightly improved video quality? That's up to all of us ourselves to decide. However, the only people who should consider buying this "for the future or to have a better chance of them being released again" is if they're going to give them to a library or a friend. Or better yet, rip them to their computer and make a "back up" copy, then donate them.

The Official Lucasfilm Response
Time

This is the best statement of all. Lucasfilm is singlehandedly responsible for creating all of the audio-videophiles, thanks to THX's brilliant marketing in the 90s. If DVD was the technology that got your Average Joe into Widescreen presentation and surround sound, it was preceded by that good ol' THX trailer blowing anybody away the first time they saw it.

Lucasfilm created this monster. Now they're seeing how angry the monster gets when you poke it in the eye.

So true. Same goes with home computer video editing which has allowed for fan edits and LD/vhs transfers.
I didn't grow up on Star Wars and I had only seen parts of the movies when they were on tv. I didn't know anything about the history, struggle and ultimate success of the films until I watched Empire of Dreams. When I learned how significant Star Wars was in film history as well as revolutionizing technology, I really wanted to see that movie, the one Empire of Dreams devoted an hour to, not the one included with the dvd set.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
"Doubt they'd break even..." Lucas has plenty of money that for him to make the upcoming release anamorphic from a film print would probably cost the equivalent of a few pennies. And that small cost would easily be made up for by dvd sales, the rerelease in theatres in '07 and the rumored ultimate box set that would be foolish not to deliver on. Do all of you realize how cheap it is for studios to make dvd's these days even though the prices are getting higher and higher.

Blade Runner Finally Gets It's Due
Time
It's not Ridley's fault that this has taken so long. Scott has reportedly wanted to do something like this since 2002 and even had assembled many of the elements, I've heard. This film had run into legal hell. This set will be an example of the proper treatment of a classic film. Another dvd Lucas should look at is Legend (R1 ultimate edition), Ridley Scott's next film after Blade Runner. It has the director's cut and the completely studio butchered US theatrical release. Jerry Goldsmith's music score was even replaced by Tangerine dream for the US. There's plenty of bonus features and even though Ridley today probably can't bear to watch the US version, it's included in full anamorphic widescreen.

Who has now lost all respect.........
Time
How cheap can Lucashfilm get? Making a widescreen video on dvd anamorphic these days isn't too hard with a home computer, it's very easy and hardly an additional expense. Not spending time and money on a restoration is one thing but for a major studio today not to make an anamorphic dvd means a "deliberate creative decision" to make the films look bad. How could any respectable film person sink so low? Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't every widescreen content on all star Wars dvd's anamorphic. This won't even be state of the art for '93, Terminator 2 was anamorphic on laserdisc and it came out in 1993.

Upcoming DVD covers
Time
They're releasing them in Full Screen? Why? Does this mean the "bonus" original films will also be panned and scanned. How cheap is it to spend time and money making two different versions while not making the films anamorphic. This confirms it, Lucas just wants to taunt and spite us.
And the new covers do suck, they even manage to look worse than the previous ones.

New DVDs NOT 16x9
Time
We might also want to try contacting film preservation organizations around the country. The fact that they wouldn't use film masters is so cheap. It's important to note what Bill Hunt said about there being many copies of the films in private collections or libraries around the country. I have a friend who told me his grandfather owned a movie theatre and has theatrical prints of many classic films including the original Star Wars Trilogy. (He doesn't live nearby but they are willed to a local film preservation society so they will be in good hands.) I'm sure there are many other film prints floating around the entire world. So even if the negatives at the ranch are not in usable shape, there are plenty of other copies that would be far better than a video master. Any arguement Lucas makes about the film prints not existing anymore is complete and utter BS.

New DVDs NOT 16x9
Time
This is ridiculous. Not anamorphic. That is UNACCEPTABLE today. There is no point having anything on dvd in widescreen not be 16x9. Most of the star wars dvd bonus features are in anamorphic widescreen, even the ones from the original trilogy which behind the scenes film was standard and thus required false letterboxing. Lucas might as well release it in pan & scan only.

Super Mario Super Show and Captain N
Time
I have the Zelda dvd. Well excuuuuse me Princess! I heard that the music from the Super Mario bros show was changed. From the IMDB Super Mario trivia page, "When shown in reruns after cancellation, DIC took out all the song remixes and replaced them with instrumentals of the songs featured in 'Captain N & the Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3' (1990)." Does this mean another preservation project?

Nintendo Wii
Time
I don't like the name Wii. Mad Magazine is going to have a field day with that name. Revolution was a perfect name and I thought it was going to stay. The DS was the code name and ended up the actual name. Some people suggested Go as a name which would have also been good because it suggests action and movement and is Japanese for five. It would have been a clever pun because this will be Nintendo's 5th home console.

.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)
Time
Guess laserdisc isn't really dead with THX 1138 and Song of the South not on dvd. Yeah, I haven't been able to finish THX. I have the original on dvd and I have just not had the attention span. Even the camera work seems designed to alienate the viewer from connecting with it. There's already a 2 disc set of the film and releasing it again with the original cut would not be worth it, from a business standpoint. I hope Lucas considers putting the original cut on the blu-ray or hd discs because they certainly will have plenty of room for it with the new version and bonus features.
As for the prequels not having the used future look, well that's the point. It makes sense of how everything was all shiny and beautiful during the republic. The era during the empire was mechanical and soulless with so much of what we saw industrial and military. Generally, I prefer the pretty fantasy world over the gritty used future science fiction world. I think one of the biggest advancements in movies (not just Star Wars) from the 1977 to today is much more detailed set building and more realistic makeup. Maybe even more an advancement than special effects.

<strong><strong>BLADE RUNNER: The Unauthorized OFF-WORLD Box Set</strong></strong> (Released)
Time
WOW! I never knew the film could be that much better than the dvd. Even the jpegs are far beyond light years ahead of the current release. I'm amazed, I always thought the film had a bit of a murky look to it, I knew the current dvd transfer was bad but I never though it was 100% responsible for the muddied look. How the hell does the existing dvd look so bad, did they transfer it from vhs?

What has gotten into Ocp? He seems to be acting really meanspirited lately. Maybe someone should point out all the time he spent "wasting" by painting out the SE elements for his classic editions. And by the way, the image of Greedo looks better from the X0 pic as does Shaw. You can tell the eyebrows were painted back in. The whole point of this project was to squeeze the best quality of the laserdiscs. Lines of resolution is only one part of the overall quality of video. The dvds may have that advantage but there's also brightness, contrast, color accuracy and compression artifacts to worry about. The one thing that makes my TR47 set easiest to tell it apart from the official dvds is the digital compression and double black bars on 4:3 tv's. The fact that there are less lines of resolution isn't that obvious.
I think it would be cool to see how the X0 transfer compares with the dvds. Maybe you guys could post more of your screen caps just as friendly advice to Lucasfilm of how it should look, because their current dvd version is not a good reference. I'd love to see some before and after comparisons, even of screens that don't look that drastic of an enhancement, to show what attention to detail can bring. And let's not forget that these articles really help others with their own color correction and captures. I know they have with my own video projects.

The Official 2006 Discs Will Be No Better Than What We Have!
Time
If it is used from a video master, what tape format do you think could be used and what quality would it be. Were there any tape formats in 1993 that were better than laserdisc. I think would be very surprised if they didn't use a film print as there has to be at least one print in good condition around somewhere. I would also be very surprised if they didn't make an anamorphic transfer.

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM
Time
According to a post on the Star Wars board on IMDB, Lucas said this:
It is illegal to profit from Star Wars without having a licensing agreement from Lucasfilm. Obviously, we have a hard time enforcing this overseas with people selling pirated Star Wars DVDs. The reason we had to finally release the old films on DVD was because of all the illegal pirating going on. We were afraid that if we waited any longer the pirates would completely saturate and take the DVD market away from us.

Anyone know if he really said this.
