Problem with slow motion in Vegas
Time
It appears that my firewire card died. The computer can't find the "microsoft dv camera and vcr" external capture device anymore. The capture device is a pyro a/v converter from ADS technologies. The firewire card is also from ADS.

What is the best firewire card to get and/or is there a really good one under $50? Especially one that doesn't drop a lot of frames with analog captures. I was reccomended the Belkin PCI to 1394a card model FSU502. It's $38 on newegg, is that a good product/price?

Info Wanted: Has anyone done any Unaltered Disney Classics preservations?
Time
That doesn't make any sense, the "special edition" of Lion King had the new song as well as new, never before seen animation. So why would they need to redo the "original" version as well.

And I don't know what you mean by getting the fixed version of Aladdin. I already have the revised part on the dvd. I'm glad I have the original line on the soundtrack.

I thought the platinum releases of Beauty and the Beast and Lion King had the original versions available along with the new version on the same disc. At least that's what the dvds claim.
As for Aladdin, I know the original line in the opening song: "Where they cut off your ear if they don't like your face" is on the soundtrack. It may have been changed in a later reissue but I have the original one.

Howard The Duck - special edition (Released)
Time
DVCam (note NOT MiniDV. DVCam is the pro-version of that and uses the same size tape but at a faster, non-drop out pitch. DVCam will not automatically play back on home camcorders, but some may surprise).

So this explains why my P.o.S. canon miniDV zr70 won't play back the tapes I recorded at a local cable station properly. It's even more worthless than I realized before.

I don't think those screen caps look that bad at all. The color is accurate unlike the official dvds and the last two with Greedo and Luke in the Falcon look really clear, without murkiness or color bleeding. That is the best images I think I've seen of those parts, especially Greedo. Considering that is not corrected and knowing what you guys can do, I think your final version "will be a day long remembered."

I figured you guys wouldn't be using the SE laserdiscs but I'm curious if anyone knows how they (at least the unaltered shots) match up. Specifically I'd love to find a comparison of in the desert with the droids and Luke and Owen puchasing the droids. Those shots looked the most deteriorated before '97. The other thing that would be interesting to compare is the shot of 3PO following the binary sunset where he begs not to be deactivated. It looks like a very poor contrast ratio. Isn't there a good ld>dvd transfer? It would be nice to have in the screenshots comparison.
Were any THX processes like dirt concealment used for the '97 laserdiscs?

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
Many people have suggested different ways of rendering the special edition discs unusable, throwing them away or sending them back to Lucas. For those of us in Region 1 who really want the official dvd of the originals but don't feel eager to "give in", I have an idea. Why not buy the release that already has the se disc made even worse. In other words, get the pan & scan version.

Think about it. The original version will be widescreen either way. I think it's more appropriate and fitting to get the special edition chopped in half because that's basically what Lucas did to the film in '97 & '04. Most if not all of the people who want the original films in their unaltered form never would buy full screen of any widescreen movie. I think it will leave much less doubt than what little there was that anyone who buys the new set wants the originals. See the butchered film the way it was meant to be seen, in its butchered form. Hayden won't be appear on the screen as long. Plus, it will look even worse on a widescreen tv, even more ridiculous than the non anamorphic dvds.

The Most Boring Commentator Ever
Time
I thought the Simpson commentaries were worthless. They rambled, talked about about things amongst themselves without explaining it to us, laughed at their own jokes and never really revealed anything interesting. I listened to the commentary for the season 4 monorail episode, I hoped they would explain where they got the idea and why they wanted to parody public transportation. Matt Stone and Trey Parker said so much more in half the time (South Park commentaries don't run full episode length) and revealed a lot of great information.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
I was just reading the digital bits review of the Spaceballs original dvd release and it said the non anamorphic widescreen release looked ok but not great because it was taken from the laserdisc master. There was a new addition released last year in anamorphic widescreen from a better transfer, I assume. Can post comparisons? I have the 2000 Spaceballs dvd and while I think it looks clean and clear, it doesn't look pristine. Before reading that article, I had thought that a high quality transfer was made from the film but it just wasn't restored or cleaned for the transfer.

You'd have to be crazy to physically cut the revised footage back into the original negatives or master print. It was very damaged by '97 but even the parts that were still in ok shape had to be in fragile condition. Lucasfilm surely couldn't be that stupid to use a patched master print to make all the copies for theatres and then home video. Anyone with 1/4 a brain would use the negatives only when absolutely necessary because the more times they were scanned and run through a projector, there would be a bigger risk that they would crack, or get misaligned and jam. The original negatives and other surviving elements were used used to create a new master print that was the basis for all subsequent copies. Whether they bothered to scan and restore the original negatives of the parts that were completely replaced is unknown. So they for sure had to restore a scene where the only thing changed was a cg ship was added in the background. But wouldn't they have had to restore everything. Lucasfilm couldn't have known to the exact frame which parts were going to be altered.

Lord of the Rings - FOTR - The Book-Cut (Released)
Time
As I said in your Two Towers book cut thread, I really like how you are restoring the original color to the films. The digital degrading of the films made them dull and boring for me. I did think some of the color in the pics, especially Lothlorien, did not look totally natural. Because of the low color contrast, Frodo's face is more obviously the same color as the background foilage on the left. Did you use behind the scenes footage or still photographs for reference. Disc four on the Fellowship extended edition has a feature called Digital Grading that shows a lot of before/after examples. Lothlorien is drastically recolored. The battle inside the mines was given a blue tint.
