POLL: WORST ACTOR OR ACTRESS IN THE PT?
Time
I think it was good to show Darth Maul very little. It added to the mystique of his character and any explanations Lucas came up with would probably be developed along the lines of Jango Fett or Count Dooku. We would have found out Darth Plagius was Maul's father and that Maul was conceived by Dark Midiclorians which also created another... his good twin.

Remember what Lucas said about the OOT not existing....?
Time
Good point about the avid system. Didn't Lucas try to talk Spielberg into editing Last Crusade digitally rather than by cutting the film? Another thing to remember is that if part of a scene was cg "enhanced," LFL still had to scan and restore the whole frame. And we know they did scan the whole film, how would they have known which parts would be changed and not needed? There was an article posted here about the Death Star run where they mentioned "fixing" one part and then Lucas wanted to redo the next shot that was most dated.

Good capture card?
Time
I actually have that capture device and I think it gives a very good capture from analog video. The only problem I have is dropped frames but I'm not sure of the cause of that, it could be the computer or the card. Other than that, I get great captures, even from vhs. I think it's very hard to tell the difference between playing the Hi8 tape directly to my tv and the dvd made from the captures. I have some screen caps but I don't know how to post them online.

POLL: WORST ACTOR OR ACTRESS IN THE PT?

Lucas is to blame. It's not like there wouldn't have been people willing to write or direct for Lucas if he had stepped back and just admitted "I can't do this effectively alone." Jake Lloyd took a lot of crap for Ani but I thought he did a good job of portraying the character the way Lucas wanted it. By the way, I think his awkward line "It's working, it's working" was another E. T. reference, the scene in the forest after Elliot's midnight Halloween ride.
Hayden I thought sounded terrible. I've heard he was actually very good in "Life as a house" and "Shattered Glass." But when you're told to talk in stilted iambic pantameter like Shakespeare, (My heart is beating, praying this kiss does not become a star) what do you expect.
I thought Neeson, Portman and McGregor did a good job.

Edit: praying this kiss does not become a scar.

Star Wars isn't the only one...
Time
Another game that comes to mind, the other OoT.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998 Nintendo 64)
In my opinion, this is the greatest video game of all time.
But there are three different versions of the game. The original version was on the gold cartridge. The Fire Temple music had Islamic chanting and Ganondorf spit out red blood near the end of the game. These were replaced for the standard grey cartridges with a bland music and green phlegm.
When it was rereleased on the gamecube, the resolution was much better resulting in a cleaner image and no dot crawl. However, the color seems to have been "enhanced" like the star wars dvds with darkened midtones. Additionally, the Muslim crescent which was on the mirror shield and other places was changed to some lame clover design. In my opinion, these changes water down the game and lessen the emotional impact it has.

Are there any ways to preserve an N64 game in the high resolution today's consoles are capable of?
And does anyone know where to find an isolated music track of the original Fire Temple music? It's hackneyed on the official soundtrack.

I actually have something intelligent to say.
Time
You wouldn't get rich even if you won. The trial lawyers would walk away with a huge chunk for themselves. If it was a class action suit, the remaining money would be split up among star wars fans (the plaintiffs) who had been "harmed." It would probably amount to a coupon for the new dvd's at half price so long as you filled out a bunch of confusing paperwork.
The only good that could come of it would be raising awareness. But I think that would be mostly negative publicity.
Not worth it!

Original Trilogy DVD Article in Total Film
Time
McCallum was very annoying on the RotS commentary but this just shows how out of touch he is. Are they just sick of the fans. Because they sure are acting like it. I've made my own videos and I would be estatic if so many people fell in love with something I did and gladly would pay for a copy. I made a highlight dvd for my high school hockey team. I was just learning to use my editing/dvd software and I only had a week to do it in time for the awards banquet. I didn't have much time to carefully scan through all the games and I thought the video ended up being too short with a lot of great footage not present.
It ended up selling like crazy at $25 a copy. Everyone loved it. I think the pressure I felt to finish it and the fact that it wasn't too long gave it a real intensity. The fight that broke out during the handshake line was also a big draw.
I think my struggle to just make something that I thought was half decent and ultimate success was similar to Lucas' struggle to make Star Wars (on a much smaller scale of course). The difficulties turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Later, I did get a chance to go through all the tapes and capture the other interesting plays. But you know what. I didn't try to add new scenes or extend it. I just made a separate video of additional scenes.

I'm reminded of what Terry Gilliam said on the Criterion dvd of Brazil. He was willing to include the "Love conquers all version" despite having fought so hard for his cut to be shown. He said something like how he saw plenty of things wrong with his film today but he wasn't going to touch it because that's the way he made it.

Both Citizen and Moth3r used Pal THX laserdiscs for their captures so the info in italics is not correct. The '95 covers in Europe and Japan were different than the Faces art in the US so the person might have assumed no Faces art meant no THX release.
The X0 site explained the difference between CLV and CAV.

Could you tell us whether you thought it looked better than laserdisc or (God forbid) vhs?
Good point about calibration. Makes me wonder if the person color correcting the 2004 dvd's had too much red in their overbrightened monitor. "Wow, sure had to add a lot of blue just to make the stormtroopers look white.
Another thought.
"Lucas cut apart the original negative to make the special edition." I thought Lucas was a longtime big supporter of digital editing and tried to get Spielberg to edit Last Crusade on a computer.

This bickering is pointless...

Anyways, the fact that it is even debateable whether the official dvd will be better than the X0 or not is telling. It really woudn't be hard for Lucas to release a good quality transfer. And I don't see how the Indiana Jones dvd set is like film coloring. That would be the 2004 Star Wars dvds. If the colors had not been so screwed up, I would have been happy with them. That has to be the worst film "restoration" ever. (at least for a home video release)

I'm just curious. Did you say you had videos you wanted to upload or that you hadn't made any new videos yet. I know video is still very taxing for a computer but what about screen captures. That's what I'd be most interested in seeing, fixed or untouched. Those examples of the timecoded print looked great and I can't wait to see more.
