Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)
Time
If the vertical black bars are actually present in your recording, does that mean they would show up on a standard tv as having a black border. Similar to say, a non anamorphic widescreen release on a ws tv. You could just chop off the sides, right?
I'm really anxious for a copy of this movie. I joined a film club at my college and would love to show it during one of our "private" meetings.

Interesting tidbit about who shot first
Time
Go-Mer, watch the scene from "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" where Tuco says the line: "When you have to shoot, shoot! Don't talk."
And Gary Kurtz didn't just say Lucas never intended to have Greedo shoot, he said it would have been very easy to do that if Lucas wanted to. People who worked on that scene have even said Lucas never attempted to make Greedo fire. Painting in a laserbolt was not beyond 1970's technology.
And I think copyright and patent laws may actually protect people from corporations. You make this great new invention. It takes a lot of your work and resources and it will be very slow going for you as an individual to duplicate, market and sell it to many people. A corporation sees your design, likes it a lot and with their superior resouces, money and equipment are selling hundreds that they make a huge profit on without compensating you for it.

Fixing Chroma Artifacts?
Time
Uggh, that last example looks pretty bad. The poor contrast and blocky pixels look about as bad as those new digital flatscreen tv's. There's nothing any post production software can help you with because it seems your raw capture is garbage in.
So, how good is your laserdisc player? And what kind of capture device did you use. Laserdisc video is analog so having a good analog to digital converter is as important as the player. The other thing is to be sure you have a computer that can handle video with plenty of processing power, ram, hard drive and all those equipment things that I don't fully understand.

How do You Play USF files
Time
I recently saved a USF file to my computer. It's the music ripped directly from the N64 gold cartridge of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The problem is no music program like Windows Media Player can read it. I even tried a few winamp downloads but that hasn't helped. Can anyone give a good way to solve this without 10 confusing steps of reformatting this file, searching this big website for the one specific plug in or converting the file to something else by undoing the driver coded flag. I'm not very knowledgeable about computers so drivers, codecs and all that stuff so keep it simple if possible.

It is a USF audio file. The file name is specifically: lozusf.rar
I found it in the music section of Zelda Legends.

Info Wanted: Anyone going to combine the SE and 2006 OT DVD?
Time
Sure, there might be plenty of people who combine the two by taking the new stuff they like and leaving out what they don't. It's already been done sometimes with other glitches fixed too: Darth Editous. The problem is different people are going to want different parts taken out or reinserted. Greedo shooting is pretty much a safe bet that everyone would agree to get rid of.

Do you REALLY think there will be remastered versions of the OOT or whatever? I don't.
Time
I think you mean super 35. Titanic was also done this way. Gladiator is 2:35 widescreen but it was actually shot 1:85 and has been shown with the full image on an HD channel. The Fifth Element is also super 35 but only matted for the non special effect shots. The sfx parts had the regular pan & scan done. Harry Potter 1 & 2 had varying amounts of more vertical picture in the fullscreen versions but 3 actually lost a bit of vertical image in addition to about half on the sides. Not sure about 4.

Time
Different versions due to being unrated or extended is one thing. Another would be if the studio tried to interfere like they did with Ridley Scott on "Blade Runner" and "Legend" or Terry Gilliam on "Brazil."

Marioxb, if you think an older film shouldn't look as good as a new one, rent or borrow any of these dvd's and ask yourself how they can look like they were shot yesterday.
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1937) that's a whole 40 years before Star Wars was released
Gone With the Wind (1939) either the newer 4 disc or 2 disc editions
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) saw this over 10 years ago in school on vhs, looked pretty bad.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974) this was the first dvd I got and I couldn't believe how much better it looked than a vhs rental.
Dragonslayer (1981) there's plenty of matte lines here so focus on the non special effects shots
E. T. The Extra Terrestrial (1982) avoid the '05 single disc release and you will have both versions. How can they both look good?
Legend (1985) region 1 "ultimate edition" has two versions, both in high quality.
Back to the Future trilogy (1985, 89, 90) listen to the Q & A audio on film one near the end, it's asked if any visibly wires were erased.

These are what I would show someone if I had to convince them that dvd is better than vhs or laserdisc. And by the way "Star Wars" was shot in Anamorphic Scope 2.35:1 on 35mm film.

Ideas for the inevitable Super-Mega-Special-Ultimate 2007 Boxset
Time
I want all the deleted scenes from IV-VI, all the vintage documentaries and tv specials, all trailers and promos including commercials for the various releases and toys, any other Star Wars related commercials such as the Designate a Driver ad with the cantina aliens. There should also be the cast interviews plus a lot of outtakes and alternate angles. It would be great even to hear from those who were extras. Are Garrick Hagon, Denis Lawson and others with small parts still around. I haven't seen anything on them. I want to see more still galleries of photos and artwork for the films. I think it would also be cool to have photo galleries of some of the various video releases with the specs about them. Ultimately though, I don't see how it can be complete without the original films restored. The color and audio better be fixed on the special editions too.

As for new documentaries, I want to see a feature about the evolution of the Emperor. He was only mentioned in Star Wars, seen briefly as a hologram in Empire which was different than the one portrayed in Jedi and the prequels. I want to hear more about how the character was developed.

Another reason to restore the original films is so they could include a feature about restoring film. It would be great if they how discussed color film that wasn't technicolor faded quickly until a slow fade design was introduced in '83. How film can degrade over time and why Star Wars fared very badly in this respect. How the telecine process has greatly improved in contrast and resolution, so much that earlier transfers don't look as good despite the film stock being in better condition. The various efforts to improve the quality over the years such as the THX cleanup and digitally recompositing blue screen shots.

The fans. You just have to do a spotlight on those who made Lucas a billionaire.

I also want to see a retrospective feature on the prequels like Empire of Dreams that addresses the many criticisms it has and have candid responses about what people who worked on them think. There's probably more deleted scenes plus plenty of additional outtakes and Behind the scenes footage to show. The ep 1 dvd feature was taken from over 600 hours of footage for example.

Of course, if anyone here could make something about any of those ideas, that would be cool too.

Stormtrooper with 4 eyes ::( or Stormtrooper showing terrible IVTC/telecine artefacts
Time
It's been said before that the "Faces" laserdisc set has less smearing and DVNR ghosting than Definitive Collection. So how could it be present on the master if the THX transfers were slightly different? Could it be that some noise reduction was applied on the fly during the telecine and then was further "corrected" in '93? And then when they went to the master for "One Last Time," they were smarter about how they used additional video fx?

How I learned to stop worrying and love the 2004 dvd's
Time
I've found that no matter how much I adjust the tv, the 2004 dvd's never look that good. The best they can look is like an indoor photo which came out too dark but has been brightened.

8. Darth Vader goes to the second Death Star at the end of Empire, ruining the pacing and confusing me the first time around.

9. The once mysterious Sarlacc has a cartoonish beak that screams CGI.

Scruffy, Continuation of Iraq Debate...
Time
Maybe you're only hearing the bad news about Iraq. Things like this are barely mentioned if at all.

WE read much in the US press about Iraq, our national politics and such...
but we never read about this. Attached is a letter sent to the Commanding Officer of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment which has been serving in Iraq (its second deployment there) for the past year. It is now leaving to come home .....
the letter reads in its entirety as follows....

"In the Name of God the Compassionate and Merciful.
To the Courageous Men and Women of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, who have changed the city of Tall' Afar from a ghost town, in which terrorists spread death and destruction, to a secure city flourishing with life.
To the lion-hearts who liberated our city from the grasp of terrorists who were beheading men, women and children in the streets for many months. To those who spread smiles on the faces of our children, and gave us restored hope, through their personal sacrifice and brave fighting, and gave new life to the city after hopelessness darkened our days, and stole our confidence in our ability to reestablish our city.
Our city was the main base of operations for Abu Mousab Al Zarqawi. The city was completely held hostage in the hands of his henchmen. Our schools, governmental services, businesses and offices were closed. Our streets were silent, and no one dared to walk them. Our people were barricaded in their homes out of fear; death awaited them around every corner. Terrorists occupied and controlled the only hospital in the city.
Their savagery reached such a level that they stuffed the corpses of children with explosives and tossed them into the streets in order to kill grieving parents attempting to retrieve the bodies of their young.

This was the situation of our city until God prepared and delivered unto them the courageous soldiers of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, who liberated this city, ridding it of Zarqawi's followers after harsh fighting, killing many terrorists, and forcing the remaining butchers to flee the city like rats to the surrounding areas, where the bravery of other 3d ACR soldiers in Sinjar, Rabiah, Zumar and Avgani finally destroyed them.
I have met many soldiers of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment; they are not only courageous men and women, but avenging angels sent by The God Himself to fight the evil of terrorism.
The leaders of this Regiment; COL McMaster, COL Armstrong, LTC Hickey, LTC Gibson, and LTC Reilly embody courage, strength, vision and wisdom. Officers and soldiers alike bristle with the confidence and character of knights in a bygone era. The mission they have accomplished, by means of a unique military operation, stands among the finest military feats to date in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and truly deserves to be studied in military science. This military operation was clean, with little collateral damage, despite the ferocity of the enemy. With the skill and precision of surgeons they dealt with the terrorist cancers in the city without causing unnecessary damage. God bless this brave Regiment; God bless the families who dedicated these brave men and women. From the bottom of our hearts we thank the families. They have given us something we will never forget.
To the families of those who have given their holy blood for our land, we all bow to you in reverence and to the souls of your loved ones. Their sacrifice was not in vain. They are not dead, but alive, and their souls hovering around us every second of every minute. They will never be forgotten for giving their precious lives. They have sacrificed that which is most valuable. We see them in the smile of every child, and in every flower growing in this land.
Let America, their families, and the world be proud of their sacrifice for humanity and life. Finally, no matter how much I write or speak about this brave Regiment, I haven't the words to describe the courage of its officers and soldiers. I
pray to God to grant happiness and health to these legendary heroes and their brave families.

Mayor of Tall 'Afar,
