.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)
Time
I'm sure you've noticed this but the guy whose legs get eaten up by the DVNR is in the background of almost every shot in this sequence. As the Indexed trilogy site mentioned, where is the action figure?
I've heard the PAL THX versions don't have smearing. I wonder what this shot looked like for those. The other thing is the THX versions have much reduced color and contrast to hide the video noise. The orange blur is much more noticeable pre THX.
Are you trying to erase the ghosting from the DC or remove the scratches from the SC? With the "Gout" dvd's, It's become a lot easier to see the ghosting. It's in a LOT of scenes. I'm now starting to wonder if the SC shots will be needed for at least half the shots.
Personally, I think the orange blur has to stay intact in it's full "glory" but I can't wait to see it with a pristine background.

The Fellowship of the Ring (again) Grading Project 2006
Time
Yay! I've already posted here multiple times about how much I hate the color grading in those films. So are all the clips in the trailers not graded?
I don't have a very advanced photo editing program but I gave a few images a try. Bottom are mine.

This needed more contrast.

PS3 or Wii?
Time
The riots that have broken out over the PS3 are utter stupidity. Ooooh, sharper graphics. Now every jerky motion and unsmooth movemnt will be crystal clear. I happen to be thinking about the sports games at the moment. Less resolution I think would be better unless the movement looks far more human like and AI is increased drastically. That way you wouldn't see all the flaws and your mind would "fill in" the blurry spots with more realistic details. A hockey player should not take a huge slapshot on a wraparound from just in front of the goal crease!
Sorry but I think HD is a bunch of overhyped crap that requires noisy murky tv sets to watch on. I want to see a moving picture, not a bunch of tiny flashing dots. Just because HD can capture every individual blade of grass doesn't mean you should see it. Apparently ESPN has never heard of Depth of Field. But at least they know how to FAKE vibrant colors and picture by crushing the blacks and cranking up the saturation of an image that likely was pretty gray to begin with.
I think Nintendo is very smart to build a console based on ideas rather than get caught up in tech wars.

The Wizard (1989, Fred Savage) Enhanced version (* unfinished project *)
Time
I'm just thinking that if the wizard was a thinly disguised Nintendo promotion, there had to be some things that aired on tv promoting it. You could also use documentaries about the NES for bonus features. I saw one of them online and it did mention the power glove, the game counselors who would talk on the phone about anything (for a price), and I think it did mention the movie.
If someone could design the menus to look like NES scenes with sprites and sounds that would be awesome. For example, the cursor that indicates which is selected could be a sprite. I would think emulation and game sites would be helpful for this.

Info Wanted: 'ISO: USA Hockey 1980 Miracle on Ice'...

Maybe it will come to dvd eventually. Some college football bowl games are on dvd. There's a few set of pro teams collections which include a few classic games. This year, all world series games were available individually and could be downloaded too. The problem is, these dvd's often don't have that great of compression. At 3 or so hours, many sporting events even without commercials are longer than most movies. And films of that length are often split onto 2 discs. So maybe it will be more viable with blu-ray. I hope so as I would love to see sports telecasts catch on like home video for movies.

As for my post on the previous page about the scene with the landspeeder. I don't have the TC print, but I must say again how clear a few uncompressed screenshots looked posted here a while ago.
Here's the scene I'm talking about. This is from the "Gout" dvd.

I don't believe there are any of those adjustments on my capture card. I can adjust the brightness and contrast after it's been captured but now matter what I try it still seems more "gray" than the vhs dub.
I feel it would be more trouble to deinterlace footage than it could be worth. I know some ways can be bad. I only want to deinterlace still images so that I could post screenshots at larger sizes.
You've got me confused with the circuit board. Is this something you buy seperately or is it part of a motherboard, graphics card or something else?
...Oh I see, it's a chip that can either be in an external capture box or part of the capture card itself.
You don't need to worry about ranting about people on advanced video forums talking way over your head. I'm sure you're justified. And it's so helpful when they tell you to experiment with results. Cause who doesn't have a few hundred dollars to spend on an extra vcr that may or may not do better than what you already have?

Edit: Wait a minute. 80 gb for 30 minutes. That seems a little high. A 25 min video (of which the middle screenshot is taken from) is an avi file that's only 7.5 gb. Don't tell me dv compression can take away more than 7/8 the size and not leave any noticeable blockiness or compression artifacts.

The TRV 32 is an excellent camera. The picture it gives looks like glorious technicolor film compared to my other cameras including miniDV (canon zr70). It is 8mm but I played the tape using a Hi8 camera with s-video. I'm not sure if it's possible to calibrate my current capture card but I wouldn't know how if it was. I've seen a picture of internal capture cards like the PDI deluxe and I don't understand how it can convert analog to digital on just the card. (Although since that's what was used for the X0, I trust it's pretty good.) I had thought that the external box was needed for digitization.
As for the images, the site I uploaded them to just had all this random script that when I pasted it here would somehow make the image appear. I tend to understand visuals better than text.
Is there any easy to use software that can deinterlace images?

I'm sure someone will record it. It won't be a good reference at all though for a proper restoration like this. The X0 team is only using pre '97 elements. The 2004 dvd colors however, are so screwed up that they cannot be completely undone. Many of the details in black areas such as Vader's cape are now all completely black, for example. Scenes are so dark that boosting them would be like trying to fix a picture that needed more of a flash. People's faces will be grayed out after brightening. The special collection and definitive collection give much more to work with.
I'm wondering how the scene with the orange blob under the landspeeder will be dealt with. I know the DC is no good because of all the smearing but I'm pretty sure a lot of the scratches and noise was already there in '77 in the master print (due to all the optical compositing).

Yes that is what I'm saying. Of course I know that shouldn't be happening. And the capture settings are the same for both devices. The vhs captures may have more noise but they seem to have more color vibrancy and contrast. The Hi8 also seem to have worse over exposure in some bright areas. The vhs does not appear as blinding white.
What I was thinking was maybe dv captures of Hi8 lose more quality than dv captures of vhs.

Speaking of DV boxes giving soft captures and crushing the white and blacks. Some of my Hi8 captures have dissapointed me because sometimes I've felt the my vhs captures have looked better in terms of color vibrancy and contrast. I mean of the same scenes in which the vhs is a second generation copy of the Hi8. So there's no way at all the vhs should look better but it kinda does.
Could it be that the DV compression takes away more from Hi8 than vhs because it's more detailed with more vibrant colors? I suppose the other possibility is that video noise and grain can give the false impression of more detail. An example of this is the old and new dvd's of "Breckfast at Tiffany's," right? Full res captures can be seen at dvdbeaver.com .

Pink Saber in OOT
Time
The vhs tapes tend to be washed out with the colors faded. A pink saber would blend in better and not look so wrong with those settings much better than it does with over darkened and over saturated colors. The sabers may have always been a little washed out in Star Wars but Vader's was never pink in the sequels.
