The $$$ spent on the war on terror
Time
Why Iraq? Because Saddam had been defying the UN for 12 years and the resolutions had been given plenty of time to work but didn't. Saddam just enriched himself the whole time with deals by corrupt officials. The fact he was willing to invade Kuwait made a lot of people worried what he would do if he got weapons. The first Gulf War was ended on a ceasefire with the condition Saddam certify all weapons programs had been destroyed and dismantled. Saddam never did so the war technically never ended.
There actually is some evidence to support the idea Saddam had wmd's sent to Syria in June 2002. A dam broke in that country at the time and Saddam was very eager to send "humanitarian items."
But you don't have to take my word for it.

The $$$ spent on the war on terror

"Spend the money on education."
The US spent more money on education than Iraq in 2004 (John Stossal). Why isn't anyone saying that's a waste of money.

"Has Bush learned nothing from history and vietnam?"
Maybe he was paying more attention to WWII history. The Nazi's could have easily be wiped out and untold death and suffering avoided if Europe had acted in the 1930's. Winson Churchill was denounced as a warmonger who played up threats about a "phoney war" while appeasement was used to ensure "peace." In the time Europe waited, the Nazi's became stronger ultimately requiring more sacrifice to defeat. The 5th Harry Potter book parallels this.
The lesson of Vietnam was that it wasn't so much a military defeat as a moral one. We should have either made a full commitment to victory or not been there at all.

I think Bush nailed the importance of Iraq becoming a free democratic state in this speech to the UN on this past September 19.
"For decades, millions of men and women in the region had been trapped in oppression and hopelessness. And these conditions left a
generation disillusioned and made this region a breeding ground for extremism.
Imagine what it's like to be a young person living in a country that is not moving toward reform. You're 21 years old, and while your
peers in other parts of the world are casting their ballots for the first time, you are powerless to change the course of your government.
While your peers in other parts of the world have received educations that prepare them for the opportunities of a global economy, you
have been fed propaganda and conspiracy theories that blame others for your country's shortcomings.
And everywhere you turn, you hear extremists who tell you that you can escape your misery and regain your dignity through violence
and terror and martyrdom.
If Iraq becomes free, people around the Middle East will take notice and wonder why their country can't be like that too. And those brutal dictators will have a harder time blaming Israel.

And yes the Iraq war was about oil but NOT involving the US. Look up Oil for Food scandal. France and Germany WERE BRIBED! Instead of doing what they thought was right, they did what was easy.

I've posted this before but I think it needs to be shown again. Why isn't this being reported on?
"In the Name of God the Compassionate and Merciful.

To the Courageous Men and Women of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, who have changed the city of Tall' Afar from a ghost town, in which terrorists spread death and destruction, to a secure city flourishing with life.

To the lion-hearts who liberated our city from the grasp of terrorists who were beheading men, women and children in the streets for many months. To those who spread smiles on the faces of our children, and gave us restored hope, through their personal sacrifice and brave fighting, and gave new life to the city after hopelessness darkened our days, and stole our confidence in our ability to reestablish our city.

Our city was the main base of operations for Abu Mousab Al Zarqawi. The city was completely held hostage in the hands of his henchmen. Our schools, governmental services, businesses and offices were closed. Our streets were silent, and no one dared to walk them. Our people were barricaded in their homes out of fear; death awaited them around every corner. Terrorists occupied and controlled the only hospital in the city.

Their savagery reached such a level that they stuffed the corpses of children with explosives and tossed them into the streets in order to kill grieving parents attempting to retrieve the bodies of their young.

This was the situation of our city until God prepared and delivered unto them the courageous soldiers of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment, who liberated this city, ridding it of Zarqawi's followers after harsh fighting, killing many terrorists, and forcing the remaining butchers to flee the city like rats to the surrounding areas, where the bravery of other 3d ACR soldiers in Sinjar, Rabiah, Zumar and Avgani finally destroyed them.

I have met many soldiers of the 3d Armored Cavalry Regiment; they are not only courageous men and women, but avenging angels sent by The God Himself to fight the evil of terrorism.
The leaders of this Regiment; COL McMaster, COL Armstrong, LTC Hickey, LTC Gibson, and LTC Reilly embody courage, strength, vision and wisdom. Officers and soldiers alike bristle with the confidence and character of knights in a bygone era. The mission they have accomplished, by means of a unique military operation, stands among the finest military feats to date in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and truly deserves to be studied in military science. This military operation was clean, with little collateral damage, despite the ferocity of the enemy. With the skill and precision of surgeons they dealt with the terrorist cancers in the city without causing unnecessary damage. God bless this brave Regiment; God bless the families who dedicated these brave men and women. From the bottom of our hearts we thank the families. They have given us something we will never forget.

To the families of those who have given their holy blood for our land, we all bow to you in reverence and to the souls of your loved ones. Their sacrifice was not in vain. They are not dead, but alive, and their souls hovering around us every second of every minute. They will never be forgotten for giving their precious lives. They have sacrificed that which is most valuable. We see them in the smile of every child, and in every flower growing in this land.

Let America, their families, and the world be proud of their sacrifice for humanity and life. Finally, no matter how much I write or speak about this brave Regiment, I haven't the words to describe the courage of its officers and soldiers. I
pray to God to grant happiness and health to these legendary heroes and their brave families.

The Fellowship of the Ring (again) Grading Project 2006
Time
I found a site that compared the Pal & NTSC versions. It also mentioned around the middle of the page that some of the color was retimed. (that's the same thing as grading, just an older way, right?)
http://videophile.info/Review/FOTR/FOTR_01.htm
I hope the behind the scenes photos I posted were helpful to you. I found a few more but I posted the ones from scenes that were most heavily graded, especially Elrond in the flashback sequence.

That reminds me of how sales reps have tried to rationalize HDtv poor picture of non HD by saying the problem is inherrant in the old obsolete analog source and we should just accept how bad standard video looks on HD tv's because HD is better. Well, all my personal videotapes are on so called crappy standard definition and gasp, most are on analog tape!
I guess it would be the equivalent of being told all the old music before digital recording (like the Beatles, Motown...) has to sound crappy and worse than it did on LP record, while current songs, which are so bland that even the studio master probably sounds like mp3, can have "crystal clarity."

"Banning of OCPMovie"
Time
You know I just don't understand why OCP has to be so uptight about the X0 project and it supposedly competing against the classic editions. They can compete together against the 2004 editions. If he doesn't care about it, then he should just move along and let Zion and the others go about their business. The fact that it would come to this is sad, really. It's like the dispute between the Judean People's Front and the People's Front of Judea from Life of Brian.
If OCP was selling his discs for a fair price that would only reimburse him for all thevdisc, postage and shipping costs, I don't see anything wrong with that.

"George is giving us a High Quality Raw Capture of the
OT, better than any LaserDisc player (even the sacred
X0) could ever give us. The X0 Project (and everyone
else's projects) will now have a much better master to
work from to create a myriad of editions for us all to
trade." - pupil

I could be wrong but I think pupil is referring to the "GOUT", not the classic editions which would make this a misquote by OCP.

Info Wanted: Harry Potter & Prisoner of Azkaban - extended version on ABC?
Time
The ABC HD was in 1:85 widescreen which I believe for the most part is the full frame of the film. Standard ABC and ABC family was in 4:3.
This site has comparisons of the wide and full screen versions of the films.

EDIT: I have heard that the scene of Sirius breaking into the common room was scripted but never shot.

What PAL/NTSC Laserdisc players would you recommend me?
Time
Did the X0 team test out as many laserdisc players as they could find? How many did you test?Or was it already known that the X0 is the best? Have you thought about sending a rating list to the LD database or something?
I know sometimes you tell by just looking that one playback device (laserdisc, dvd, vcr and others) is better than another but what would you do with the ones that were really close? Are there any photo editing tools that could highlight a slight difference? I know from the X0 site that cranking up the saturation is one. I took screencaps of the exact same frame from 3 different Hi8 cameras using s-video with each. Although they don't look exactly the same, I really can't tell if one camera capture is better than the other.

Anyone Hi8 Experts
Time
What exactly do the compression numbers mean? I would think 5:1 would mean that the file is compressed to 1/5 its size but the three numbers confuse me (4:1:1).
Anyways, I finally got an opportunity to get the screencaps from the vhs and Hi8 sources.

VHS 2nd generation

Hi8 1st generation, s-video cable used

VHS

Hi8
http://www.uploadfile.info/uploads/54353146b3.jpg

Basically, the vhs screens appear more 3 dimensional to me while the Hi8 screens look more washed out and flat. In the second set, the trees in the background may be sharper from the Hi8 but they stand out more in the vhs. I also like how the sky is not as overexposed from the vhs. Based on how that field looks to my eyes at the same time of the year (late October), the grass is too bright in the Hi8 screen again.
While the vhs appears to be smooth and as clear as possible from the tape, I see a lot of either small dots or noise within the Hi8 picture.
It's easier to spot on what should be solid colors. I can see it at half size too so I don't think it's due to interlaced picture. I highlighted the best examples. This is from my 8mm but I used a Hi8 camera with s-video for playback.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
I thought your voiced sounded very dubbed, unfortunately. It didn't seem to have the full range of a voice either, only the bass. It did sound like the pitch was noticeably lower. As for recording it off a mike, it might work. You seem to know what you're doing with sound and obviously must have a pretty good setup. It might give it a more OT feel since a lot of the dialogue in those films seems like it was always somewhat garbled. The 2004 mixes were so bad because they were like the sound eqiuvalent of edge enhancement.
I don't believe this has been asked before. Are there any movies with someone having a voice similar to how you want Anakin to sound?

Final Consensus On 2006 OOT
Time
Does anyone know the last widescreen movie that was released non anamorphic before these?
I also would like to add that I hate nonanimorphic widescreen bonus features as well. I mean for the behind the scenes footage since that is usually 4:3 and would have to be false letterboxed. Mirrormask comes to mind. It's stupid to do that unless it's to format the picture for 16x9.

I have Vegas too (version 4). I'm surprised it took me so long to discover the Color Balance video fx, that is very helpful for fixing something that's too far one color.
That Rivendell shot has always bothered me. One of the trailers has it ungraded. If it was grainy before, it's going to look grainy now. Unless your correction is introducing the grain. I know heavily using the Chroma Key did that for me. Or it could be that the compression is just more noticeable without everything being the same color.
I assume you're using the video from the Extended Edition as 2 discs makes it much less compressed.
Galadriel looks like a ghost in the last official shot.
Here's another photo edit.

Most if not all are from a site called Fantasy Planet. Not sure what language it's in, I found them on a "lotr trailers" google image search.

Final Consensus On 2006 OOT
Time
Probably better than any previous NTSC release. The PAL laserdisc transfers are probably the only thing better, at least until the X0 project. Star Wars and Empire look a lot clearer than my cowclops anamorphic bootleg and the black bars are really black. I didn't get Jedi because that film already looks pretty clear and the parts in Jabba's Palace that look murky (like Lapti Nek) are likely resulting from the DVNR.
Looking at both my bootlegs or the official discs, Empire may actually be in the worst shape. Star Wars has gotten a lot of talk about being in such bad shape but it seems that mostly, it was just the Tunisia scenes that faded or accumulated a lot of dirt. Empire it seems has a lot of noise and grain all over the place.
A lot of people have mentioned the Editdroid disc as being a good bootleg. Is that version included in the screenshot comparisons?

"Black Friday" SW DVD Sales...Wow, Did Some of You...
Time
What stores if any would still have their exclusive bonuses. (As the Star Wars site claims) Best Buy recently had them on sale for $14.99 so I'm surprised they're dropping more.
Have the sets sold well? I mean my local Borders has a shelf of it's top 10 selling dvds which it puts on sale. A month ago all three were on there. Is is safe to say they have outsold the ridiculous SE Trilogy set without the bonus disc yet?
Oh well, I bought Star Wars with the comic book and later got Empire, both for under 15 each so I don't feel that screwed.
