So, just how bad is pan & scan compared to widescreen?
Time
All the Star Wars films are 2.35:1 hard matte. You lose "half the picture" in this way although with other full screen versions of films, you might lose less or even gain image (open matte).
Here's a site that compares the wide and full screen dvd's of the Harry Potter movies.
http://plum.cream.org/HP/index.htm

Does anyone know if these films were open matte?
Better off Dead (1.85) 1985
Lemony Snicket (1.85) 2004
Peter Pan (live action 2003) 2.40:1 but was it super 35 like Titanic?
Airplane & the Naked Gun trilogy (1.85)

Another breaking update. By making the capture pin resolution back down to 320 x 240, I'm getting motion full color video with Overlay checked under video. Overlay would show a black screen at a higher resolution and Preview shows a still frame in either instance. I hope this doesn't mean I'm capturing at half size, though. I guess I just need the audio cables, PDI card came with some but they don't fit. I hope putting L and R audio into one blue imput will not screw up stereo sound.

I'm not sure where in virtualdub to look up all the settings but I'll try.
From compression settings it has a format restriction of 24 valid depths. YUY2 compression method is predict median and RGB compression method is predict gradiant. The field threshold is 480 lines. The following boxes are all unchecked.
Ignore is-interlaced flag
Always suggest RGB format for output
Enable RGBA (RGB with alpha) compression
Swap fields on decompress (for people with broken capture drivers)
Enable console window logging (useful for debugging)

Video has "overlay" checked. Preview acceleration has "both fields" selected.
For Capture Pin I have video standard set to NTSC_M. I just changed frame rate to 29.97 and made color space compression YUY2. I also boosted output size to 720 x 480. I did the same thing with Preview Pin. Does output size control the size of the actual capture or just what it's being previewed and displayed at?

For capture filter the setting is NTSC_M (again) with 525 lines detected (I can't change that number). For video Proc Amp (also under Capture Filter) Color enable box is checked.

Crossbar imput is 0: video s-video in. The box Link Related Streams is unchecked.

Custom Video Format: Frame Size is 720 x 480. Data Format is YUY2- YUV 4:2:2 interleaved.

Capture Timing Options. Drop Frames and Insert Frames boxes are unchecked. Synch audio to video by sampling audio at faster or slower rate is selected for Resynch Mode. Correct Video Timing... and Automatically Disable Resynch with Integrated Audio/Video are both checked. Audio Latency Determination is set to Automatic with 30 audio blocks to use at start.

Audio imput is set to "line in." Audio source is set to "audio line."

Well that's every option and setting I could find. I hope this helps.

EDIT: While I was going through those settings, I changed a few where I saw fit given my knowledge. Now the video is in color and it isn't broken in half. But it isn't playing. Whenever I hit preview it just shows one frame, frozen while the tape in the camera continues to play.

I've gotten that to work and now am attempting to capture. Problem is the s-video is in black and white and the top half of the video is on the bottom of the frame and the bottom half is above it with a thick black line separating the two. What's happening. I'm also not getting any audio as there are only component imputs. I don't see where to plug in the red and white cables.

How to use HuffYUV

Hello again. I'm looking at all 16 files that were included when I unzipped the huffyuv winrar file. I hope I don't bother anyone with another question but I'm just a little confused about how to follow the instructions. And perhaps a bit too afraid of making a mistake.

'Extract the INF file from the source.zip and the DLL file from the other zip, rename the dll to huffyuv.dll, right-click on the inf file and select "install".'

I see the .inf file I need to right click "install" on so I guess I got that part right. I'm a little unsure which file to extract from. There are two zip files. One file is huffyuv_ccesp-patch_0.2.5.zip (17kb). Another is huffyuv_ccesp-patch_0.2.5.source.zip (54kb). There's also a file with the icon of a piece of paper with green and orange gears on it. It's called huffyuv_ccesp-patch_0.2.5.dll. Unless that last file I mentioned is the dll file I need to rename which would mean I already extracted what I needed from the zip files? Is that all I have to do? Is that last file the one I should rename to huffyuv.dll?
I just want to confirm that I've got this absolutely right. Thank you for your help.

Is it just me or does anyone feel the original Yub Nub was more fitting for the end of a movie with more sequels planned and the Victory Celebration made Jedi feel more like the end of the saga. Do you think that's why it was changed in '97, to give Jedi more finality? Still, by making Leia "the other" and having the emporer die, Lucas already knew (by '83) there would be no episode 7?

Look, I know what googling means. I'm usually wary of search engines for very specific technical questions as it's hard to get a direct hit. However, the part you quoted of Moth3r just really confused me and I didn't understand what that meant. I probably didn't recognize the inf or dll files. I just do better with more detailed instructions that explain a little more. To be honest, I'm amazed it only took me 4 posts before I got the files unzipped on the computer I needed. I think I understand now so I'll have another go at it tomorrow (it's late for me now).

However, I do think I found the compression dialogue of Virtual dub. It had a list of various codecs like mpeg4 but didn't have Huffy able to be selected.

Okay I just extracted all the virtualdub and Huffy files and transferred them to my computer for video editing. Vdub seems to be working fine but I can't get Huffy to open. I got the "To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it" message. I thought I copied every file that was extracted (even the txt and readme stuff) that might be needed to install the program properly.

Where do I get virtualdub? I don't think I have it unless it came with the PDI card. VLC, windvd and power dvd, what are those? Are they dvd computer playback devices?
I suppose I should mention that the dvd burning program I have is Sonic My dvd. I don't have any mpeg2 encoders. I just make an avi file and my dvd handles it fine. Do I have to compress to something like mpeg2 for the dvd?

Okay, I need to make a highlight video for the hockey team whose games I recorded all season. I got my computer refurbished with a PDI Deluxe card but I'm sure I won't have enough space to capture every clip I want without using compression. I don't want to lose any quality and I know HuffYUV is lossless. I have no clue how to use it and I don't want to screw up.
Where do I download it?
How do I install it?
My computer for video editing does not have an internet connection so I will have to download it from one computer and transfer it to another. Would a cd-r be fine for that?
I want to use Huffy in real time capturing.
I have also heard Huffy video does not play back well on the computer. Would this be a problem on a playable dvd and what could be done about that if it is?
How do I calibrate it?
I also have DScaler installed. I know that can convert interlaced to progressive but I'm not sure if I should. My footage is all hand held and has a lot of action. I want to test it first on captured footage before I capture with it on. How do I make sure it's not on and then use it later?
I need really simple instructions as I don't have a clue about script settings or just number settings.
My editing system is vegas 4 with Windows XP. All the video is from Hi8 tapes.

Info: Hold onto your old Little Mermaid discs!
Time
Well, I watched the platinum dvd last night and I really wasn't that impressed with the picture. It looked blurry and some moving objects seemed to stutter through the frame. When I went frame by frame, I saw that there were a number of frame blending scenes. What happened? Is the older dvd like that too. It also sounded faint.
But I was watching the extra features and I could swear the film clips looked better in those cases. The infamous priest scene even appears with his kneecap in the Hans Christian Anderson feature.

If Lucas just released the original versions restored in '04, no one would be complaining. It would have been different if Lucas had just said back with the '04 release that they wanted to get the OT on dvd sooner rather than later and there was a lot of material they didn't have time/space for. He could have just said there would be a more elaborate box set with the original films restored in '07. It might have cost him sales in the long run since some people would have passed on the dvd set but he would have gained a lot more respect eventually. I think this delay is good because I think LFL will be more likely to release a quality set rather than all the existing dvd's and put them in one box. I wonder if there has been some argument at LFL about what to include with some people pushing for the OOT restored and Lucas resisting. I also wonder if the '06 set will still be limited. LFL will definitely want something star wars on the shelf and an individual release might be seen as drawing more sales than a box set that can be easily found used, separately on amazon.

How many complaints do you hear about the walkie talkies in E. T.? Very few because the dvd in 2002 also contained the original theatrical release. The Criterion dvd of Brazil even has the infamous love conquers all version and everybody knows how much Terry Gilliam hated that version. Blade Runner will be released with all versions later this year.

So wait, was this vertical blur on the laserdiscs or just the new dvds? Which X0 laserdisc cap shows more detail, the definitive or special collection. Getting more detail with the SC seems very likely but I can't understand how the '93 laserdisc could have more detail than the "Gout" without some tweaking.
Edit: FYI, that last shot, the 2004 SE transfer of shot # 36 can also be seen in non-animorphic widescreen with the full screen dvd.

I just wish the laserdisc database let you search by "not on dvd" or "with supplemental features not on the dvd." I just found a serious movie store that has a TON of laserdiscs and it would have been nice if I knew which titles were really valuable. I did not find "Song of the South," "E.T." (deleted scenes) and I have dvd transfers of THX 1138 and the Star Wars laserdisc extras. What about the Disney movies, have their dvd's ported over laserdisc extras or not. (I saw many of those)

Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)

Would it be possible for someone to further clean up the video, particularly the animated segments? I mean isn't animation easier to restore than live action? I'm just thinking about the cleanup that was done for Grave of the Fireflies by Central Park Media. They used DVNR and it the before/after shots were impressive although I noticed smearing in a few scenes like there was with the Star Wars THX versions.
By the way, the Sing A Long Songs dvd "Pongo and Perdita" has Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah on it. I know it's considered bad to use varying quality levels for a film presentation but I still think it could help. Someone did mention the song sounded off so that could be used for comparison.

Well, what were they thinking releasing the 3 disc set in '05 and then the no effort original versions the year before an expected mega box set? Even if the OOT was still non animorphic, a box set would have sold better if it had everything else like the deleted scenes, then fans would have been thinking "it's the best we're going to get for a while."
I'll tell you this, I only started searching for a internet list of changes to the films after I got the '04 dvd set. That's when I found this site because I was interested in seeing and then getting a copy of the original versions. I did not own any previous vhs releases and hadn't even heard of laserdisc. I learned a lot about the films as well as a lot about home video. I learned what animorphic video means too.
In other words, if the original versions that we have now had just been released in the '04 box set, I would have been perfectly happy because I wouldn't have known to expect better.
I'm wondering if anyone else thinks Lucas wouldn't have pissed off so many people as much if he had merely included the letterbox original versions the first time around and then waited for this year to release another OT dvd set.

I wasn't aware of the effort in trying to reconstruct Fantasia. But you are surely aware of how some scenes in that movie were censored. Many other Disney films have had elements erased or cut to avoid offending anyone. Song of the South (1946) has been pretty much disowned by Disney with the exception of the oscar winning song Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah and the ride Splash Mountain. I didn't even see any good dvd bootlegs on eBay made from either the Asian laserdiscs or recent UK tv airings.

Umm, I hope it isn't too late to vote for not being burned into the frame. You just make more hurdles if you want to do anything with the disc later such as another language. I would prefer them not to block the picture or have the option to turn them off. White text contrasts better against a solid black background anyways.
Still excited to see this either way.

Will you buy the OOT again ?
Time
At the very least the OT better be the correct colors. It's pathetic they couldn't at least get the SE restoration right. By the way, you know you can't get 1080 on regular dvd, right? That's what the new hi-def formats are for. And if there are Swedish subtitles, I just hope they don't turn into a shameless plug for vacationing in the country or the moose...
