Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)

How exactly was it transferred to video? Because I notice low contrast that washes out detail in dark areas and it's interlaced. The tree in the first cap has a white line separating it from the background (edge enhancement, how would you get that from a film print?)
If the restore 24 gives a better result than anything previously (PAL vhs, laserdisc, sing-a-long dvd's) available, by all means release it even if it isn't as good as hoped. I've never seen the film but I want to get a copy soon. Who knows, someone else might be able to improve the quality further.

What exactly were MUSE laserdiscs? Did they have anything to do with Japanese vhs releases using a Hi-vision transfer?
On another note, I was looking through the official screenshots page and noticed something with shot 15, the wide shot of the binary sunset. In the 2004 SE you can see faint clouds just below the 2 suns but they are not visible in any other transfer posted. I was thinking this might have been an SE alteration but it was not mentioned on the official star wars site list of changes. So do you think it was always there and only the dvd revealed it or just another really minor change?

Happy 30th Anniversary, Star Wars!

Thanks a lot to this site. I've learned so much about video just by reading about others attempts to capture their laserdiscs and learned so much about color correction. If Lucas had released the original versions with the 2004 set, I never would have bothered to look for this site and find a way to obtain the originals. So I suppose I can thank him for something after all.
Anyways, I invited a few friends over to watch the original film in celebration.

By stepping down, do you mean that it will still be sharpened somewhat but not as much or that you're dropping the edge enhancement completely. And will you be able to totally undo the EE or be forced to add a softening filter to compensate for it? The bottom line is if a video source can't be improved any further with the available equipment without adding some serious flaws, it's better just to leave it alone and hope it can be improved eventually at a later time, either with a better source or better video f/x technology.

"You could also use documentaries about the NES for bonus features. I saw one of them online and it did mention the power glove, the game counselors who would talk on the phone about anything (for a price), and I think it did mention the movie."

Yeah, now that I think about it, there was a really good documentary about the early days of Nintendo. I think it was found on the website The Hylia. I recently rented the movie on vhs and seeing that documentary really helped me understand some of the things in the film like the power glove (it really was "so bad") and the game counselors who could talk about anything for a price. I liked the movie enough that I convinced the store owner to sell it to me for $9.99 which is what it would cost them to replace with the dvd. The picture on vhs is already pretty good, I didn't see the point of buying a dvd over vhs when it doesn't have any extras or even scene selection, something that is ridiculously easy for me to do with my home videos. And I'm pretty sure the movie was open matte as every thing seemed to fit fine between the sides. Some of the scenes looked like they had no room to chop off the top and bottom anyway. There really was no point to get a dvd that had no scene selection and gained nothing by being in widescreen, surely the laserdisc must have had chapter stops?

"The text on the revised Jawa sandcrawler shot is amusing, as the "technological" improvement involved was simply reshooting the original miniature from a different angle."

And that's one of the additions that I think is good. Why couldn't they have reshot the original models likewise in some of the other alterations instead of using soon to obsolete CG. I mean, considering the improvement of the model work with the second death star attack in Return of the Jedi, by 1994, they could have greatly improved many effects shots without "cheating" and using technology that was not available at the time. I'm sure it would have been possible with current effects knowledge to use only 1977 technology to get better than 1977 results. (And most likely better than a lot of 1997 results too.)

Oh, it goes in the similar port to where you put the speaker cables. That makes a lot more sense. I'll have to try it. The thing is, the PDI card came with some cables that had the exact same RGB imputs on them. So I brought those to the store and tried the phone plug and it wouldn't fit meaning it wouldn't fit into the imputs on the capture card either. But I guess that didn't give me a good chance to see if those phone plugs would fit into another imput somewhere else on my computer.

Revenge of the sith is the shite and the flies upon it

Have you seen the tv funhouse skits "Disney Vault" and "Bambi 2002" which make fun of the sequels? They are so funny, a real accomplishment for Saturday Night Live today. I'm trying to think of examples of good sequels. Back to the Future II and III were good. All 3 Indiana Jones movies were good. I thought Shrek 2 was better. Can someone explain why Fantastic Four is getting a sequel. I thought it was pretty much considered average at best.
As for Star Wars, I thought Phantom Menace and Sith were ok. Although some people think of TPM as slow and boring, I think that's better than a bunch of video game action scenes that don't seem to make much sense but look really cool. Clones is without a doubt the worst Star Wars film because for one thing, it's too confusing. I'm still not completely sure why there was an assassination attempt on Padme. And there are all these battles and fights and I have no idea who's fighting who and what the point is. At least I understood what Lucas was trying to do with the romance scenes. They fall in love even though its forbidden.
And the other thing the prequels had going for them was the set designs, costumes and concept art. I thought those were much better than the original films. The base on Hoth looked like it had plastic walls, not carved out of real ice. And cloud city was visually boring, something the SE actually improved. Jabba's lair didn't feel much like a palace.

I've actually already been to a Radio Shack and the stereo jack they pointed me to will not work. I know the out side will not fit into the blue input on the card. And I don't think my sound card has a sound input and I certainly don't have a direct connection to the motherboard. Would it be possible to provide a picture of what I need? MBJ, what version of Vegas do you have because the captured video came out all garbled when I imported it to Vegas 4.

Well, I was able to capture video, unfortunately I got no audio. I was able to try out one of those stereo jacks at a nearby store, but I'm pretty sure it won't fit properly into one of the colored inputs on the PDI card. Also when I tried to import one of the v-dub captured avi's into Vegas 4.0 to edit, it came out all garbled. Although it played fine in windows media player, it won't do me any good if I can't edit the footage.
Here is a picture of the capture card in my computer

With the s-video and red/white audio cables (yellow is composite video which is not used)

If those colored inputs are component video jacks, then where is the audio supposed to go? People I've asked at stores have told me if it's component, it will accept video only no matter what adapter I might try. The PDI card claims to be usable with component, s-video and composite so I don't understand what I'm doing wrong.

I think it would be really helpful to know what has been done and what is remaining. Otherwise, we will be "most displeased at the apparent lack of progress." It sounds like lot of preparation and mundane things went into setting up this effort, such as the timecoded print. Or maybe create a FAQ on the website that explains why this has been so time consuming. It seems to me that there's been plenty of work done that we don't know about.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't going to originally be a straight X0 transfer from the '93 set, meaning it would be about the same as the GOUT? When did you decide to color correct the film and then to use another source altogether (the Japanese special collection) to combine it into one?
About the missing frames, was the Japanese special collection telecine ever used for another release such as vhs? Because I was looking at the '92 pan & scan NTSC vhs which I believe was the last vhs release before the '95 faces set. There is definitely some missing frames and music after Yoda's "There is another." line on the Empire tape.

EDIT: One last question, are those screenshots of the missing frames from X0 captures?

I don't know how to professionally calibrate it, but believe me, I've adjusted the settings and tried to experiment with all the color options more than Lucas has tinkered with his films. While adjusting the settings on other tv's has improved the picture, it always looked decent to begin with, not like garbage. No matter what I do, it always looks like I'm seeing a picture through a blurry and foggy piece of glass.

How were the colors altered in '97? They struck a brand new print from the restored negative and interpositives so shouldn't it have been fairly accurate.

EDIT: If I read correctly, it said you still had to do some color correction to the film but as of now, how much of Star Wars is restored up to that point like in the example above? That looks really good, no one would ever guess that was sourced completely from laserdisc.

My family has an HDtv and I absolutely hate it. I can see rather large square pixels in many scenes and the contrast ratio is atrocious. I've basically had to train my eyes to tolerate a blurry and fuzzy picture. Some of my vhs tapes like Titanic with a good vcr on our standard tv look better. I will still watch most widescreen movies on our standard tv downstairs. Our old tube tv was so much better but it was unfortunately wearing out. By the way, how good of an improvement could we expect if we upgraded our component cables that run from the dvr box to the tv to digital connectors like HDMI?

Other than the contrast ratio, most dvd's look pretty good on our HDtv even though we use a portable dvd player with composite imputs. The unaltered movies actually look pretty good. I like how they look better than the 2004 discs because the screwed up colors and darkened image looks even worse with a poor contrast ratio tv. The anamorphic image with the special editions does not look that noticeably better in my case.

I looked at my E. T. disc on our HDtv and our standard rear projection Mitsubishi tv. I had to make the contrast about 25% on the projection tv to equal the maximum contrast on the HD one.
Here's an example of poor contrast ratio with a screenshot from Blade Runner. The top is the original image and the bottom is what I would likely see with the Sony Wega HDtv.
