The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)
Time
  • Are you planning to include DominicCobb’s idea for restructuring the moment with Kylo and the helmet vision?
  • Could you cut Rey’s reply “It’s an excellent name?”
  • For the desert chase sequence you may consider cutting “They fly now!”. It’s a fun exchange but not very credible in-universe.
  • I agree with what others said about cutting the moment the TIE cockpit explodes.
  • Restructuring the reveal of Chewie’s survival is a good idea but the actual scene where Chewie appears feels too short and inconsequential without the scene that leads up to it.
  • Do you still plan to add new music to the Endor duel?
  • Will you change “Luke and Leia” music from the Lando and Jannah talk?
  • The new epilogue and ending shot are just wonderful.

The "Vader Edition" Star Wars Saga - Episodes 1-6 Edits (WIP)
Time

Your ideas surprised me for the best. For me it’s always been hard to choose prequel edits because while they get rid of the cringe, most also trim scenes I genuinely like (Yoda using a lightsaber comes to mind) or try too hard to make them match the OT. Your intended edits to Empire and ROTJ are the exact same ones I had thought of making to Adywan’s Revisited edition and IlFanEditore’s color-corrected ROTJ. So far your changes list strikes a good balance for me, so I’m looking forward to see them finished!

Your Vader vs Obi-Wan idea is alright for me, if the rest of the movie is suitably improved to look more like the redone scene.

Who the heck ARE the Sith in RoS?
Time

I believe this is meant to symbolic. Each Sith who answers to the Rule of Two is meant to build upon what his/her Master (and thus, all of their predecessors), accomplished. Not only did Sidious carry on the legacy of tens of previous Sith Lords (all the way back to Bane), he also fulfilled the master plan all those Sith were contributing to: getting their revenge on the Jedi and restoring a Sith-ruled Empire.

Name Something You Unreservedly Love About The Rise Of Skywalker
Time
  • A live-action gold lightsaber. It should have been Rey’s from the beginning of the film.
  • Luke and the X-Wing.
  • Han’s posthumous talk with Ben.
  • R2 and Chewie’s reactions to Leia’s passing.
  • The arrival of Lando and the galactic fleet (and seeing Naboo and Mandalorian ships).
  • The voices of the Jedi, including Ahsoka’s.

To go back to earlier, I think making Jannah be Finn’s sister (and not Lando’s daughter) would be the the type of relationship reveal that would benefit this movie, if it were doable, which I highly doubt.

Anyway, has anyone successfully implemented the Rey killed her parents angle? The FX work is beyond my ability, but if someone has done it, I’d be interested in borrowing it for my edit.

Also, is the trailer footage officially available anywhere? They’re not on the Blu-Ray and Disney+ doesn’t let you download extras. Granted there’s only a couple seconds of footage not in the finished film.

IlFanEditore did a version where Rey killed them by blowing their ship up with Force lightning.

Don’t know if you guys realised but Coruscant has twin sons, not shown in Prequels but its in Return Of The Jedi and Clone Wars.

I’m not seeing any evidence of that.

I wouldn’t say anything If I didn’t think it was a continuity issue, last time we see Coruscant theres twin sons.

I was always under the impression those were its moons, rather than suns.

According to canon and Legends Coruscant has one sun and 4 moons.

My suggestion of the kiss was more about tying the film better with TLJ. As it stands, the way Rose is treated is rather jar jarring.

I believe most fan-editors either edited the kiss out of TLJ or pretend it didn’t happen, and seeing as Rose’s basically been demoted to extra in TROS, a sudden kiss at the end is going to feel even more out of nowhere than the one on Crait. Now, about the Stormpilot shipping, I agree queerbaiting is indeed an issue, but not really among TROS’s biggest flaws (though if hints of attraction between Finn and Poe were made to be more consistent between the three movies I’d actually buy it as a “bonus”).

Lando and the Rebels sounds nice, though probably not Williams-y enough since it’s not from a movie score.

The only thing we all agree is that Luke and Leia’s theme has nothing to do with that moment. Maybe Luke and Leia could be used to score Luke and Leia’s training flashback, or when Luke has Rey claim Leia’s lightsaber.

Does anyone have the skill/time/desire to change the ship they take to the Star Destroyer? We could also repurpose and reuse a shot of everyone rounding a corner to be looking at a ship (from the scene where they meet Zorri) to help set up this idea.

I have good sound files and could help sell the idea, I’m just not good enough at VFX to make it happen. I could cut together scenes for it to help explain better if that would help.

Sounds intriguing. Is it for getting rid of the too-convenient First Order passport thing?

If some VFX wizard could actually manage to accomplish this, I wouldn’t have a problem with it, though it would be nice to have your mockup version of the idea with a placeholder shot playing the part of the new VFX shot

Actually, axlanian just clarified for me that there’s a whole nother layer of clips, intended to be less audible and more in the background, that I didn’t include.

I’ll add that, and upload another clip when I can. I’ll just try to keep it from sounding too muddy. Ideally every contributor would technically be included. But we’ll see!

I was wondering if that was the reason it sounded off to me. Some of the lines were coming out as too prominent, while many others I’d gotten accustomed to in most previous versions (including my own callsign, that had been quite audible in the left channel) were nowhere to be heard.

Did you mean my previous link? If so, that’s ultimate due to me trying to create a 5.1 mix without anything to listen on besides stereo speakers.

Yeah. I’m listening on a Bluetooth headset, so the audio differences are more noticeable.

Anyway thanks for answering, you guys rock!

Thanks to axlanian, here’s the intended-as-final version of the arrival of the civilian fleet. Awesome to have so many of you contribute, and it makes for a wonderful fan editing moment.

I think the version posted right before this one sounded better in the sense the more prominent lines blended better with the background ones and the sound environment, but still is a wonderful addition to the movie.

Also poppasketti’s rainbow look neat! The subtlety makes it blend very well

I’d really love to change the end music. JJ seems to play the whole soundtrack in the last 40 minutes and doesn’t know who’s theme goes with what.

The main new theme of the soundtrack (aptly titled Rise of Skywalker) is arguably its best and it really works during the triumphant Star Destroyers falling montage at the end, and during the final scene with Rey, Finn and Poe, so I wouldn’t change that particular track.

It’s the rest of the score during the celebrations on Ajan Kloss, however, the one that’s all over the place. Why use Yoda’s theme? Luke and Leia’s theme? They’re awesome pieces of music in their own right, but a great part of the appeal of Williams’s themes is the association between the actual music and the character/place it represents, otherwise they lose their meaning and become trivial.

I don’t see any issues with Yoda in jonh’s ghosts scene. For me it’s perfect the way it is.

I think the difficulty is we no longer have an opening shot from space to end the crawl on. All 9 films start with a ship travelling by or to a planet in space.

Isn’t Hal’s version supposed to begin with Mustafar? Though maybe someone could repurpose or edit a shot of the planet from space, for any edit that seeks to begin with Rey’s training.

General thoughts

  • Lando is supposed to stay in Pasaana for like 15 years. Granted, one shouldn’t be looking at extra material to fill these kind of holes.
Yeah the premise of the Lando subplot is strange, but that´s because Lando’s reasoning to stay on the planet was supposed to be to cope with the loss of his daughter and that was cut from the film. I have mixed feelings about cutting Lando’s entire screentime on Pasaana. I know it’s too convenient and makes the overall sequence drag a bit, but we would need to work around the references to Ochi, his ship and his relation to the Wayfinder. And Lando’s cameo at the end wouldn’t have any buildup.

  • Moving the Falcon sequence to after Rey’s training course feels like a better choice pacing-wise. In that case, would the chess scene still be moved to the epilogue?

So, here’s the link to the DotF DSII duel edit I mentioned earlier. The transition out of the song into the film’s actual score still needs a little work but otherwise, I’m pretty happy with it. Apologies for the overall low quality, I’m not sure where to find good quality clips from the film, so I screen recorded off of Disney+ on my PC for the video and ripped the music from YouTube.

Later in the video, when Rey heals Kylo, is a leftover from some experimentation I was doing with the back half of the video. Leading up to the voices (again, while Rey is healing Kylo), the audio would have been sucked out by the “Force Bond” sound effect and all the foley is replaced with a low rumble (to try to make it seem like Rey is getting pissed) and the second half of Anakin’s Dark Deeds. The foley slowly comes back in as she loses the upper hand – albeit distant and echoey – and then returns to normal when Leia calls out to Ben. I definitely don’t think the voices would work for this fan edit, but I thought it was interesting and ironic how well the visuals and VO lined up so I decided to share it regardless.

The actual Duel of the Fates track feels a bit too much on the slow side, but yeah that choir-less version suits the scene the best.

The TLJ voiceover was a curious bit! Maybe a very subtle whisper of a couple of those lines could actually be in the movie at some point.

You have nothing to apologize, for, Hal!

Thanks to your prequel edits and Adywan’s Revisited project I first found out about fan-edits being a thing, and inspired me to actively thinking about how to improve a flawed movie (and take upon myself to do small scale micro-edits for some films). It says so much that your “swan song” project is becoming a truly collaborative effort between talented fans. Remember when most of us believed this movie’s issues were a lost cause at first? Look how far we’ve come. After all you’ve done for the fan-editing community you’ve got a more than deserved retirement!
