Sequel Trilogy Opinions

TFA: Really enjoyed it on first viewing. Despite retreading similar story beats to ANH it has a lot of good things; the call-backs mostly land the chemistry between characters is great, and feels like Star Wars. My biggest grip with it is resetting the status quo of the galaxy to another “underdog Rebellion vs powerful Empire” conflict.

TLJ: Really enjoyed on first viewing, then my impressions of it soured, now it falls in a middle-ground. I love the cinematography and special effects, improves the worldbuilding, has nice themes and has a lot of intriguing ideas to offer, though their execution (and humor) is hit-or-miss. Maybe it’s a bit too subversive for its own good.

TROS: Decent first viewing experience, now I like it but not so much as TFA. I really think they should have spun the TLJ twists in a new direction instead of just retconning them. The plot and editing make it look more of a compilation of cutscenes from a videogame, and as the closing entry of the Skywalker saga it’s ending is a bit undisclosed and vague.

The Clone Wars: Refocused [COMPLETE]
Time

I’m on board with the weekly reveals!

I think the episode-merging can make sense for the earlier 2-and-a-half seasons where the arcs don’t have that much narrative cohesion and there aren’t many hints to their place in the timeline. At least for me (a continuity geek), moving a early arc to the later part of the series would take me out of the viewing experience; unless it’s done for reasonably good storytelling purposes.

I stand by my idea of a combined Cloak of Darkness/Lair of Grievous, if only to not lose the great action in the latter episode.

I agree Blue Shadow Virus isn’t that good and that it wastes the bio-weapon plotline; Sphere of Influence is just padding, and the first Mandalore S3 chapter is skippable.

That’s a nice way of ordering the episodes to make the animation revamp more meaningful. Maybe the order could go like this:

 • ARC Troopers
 • Geonosis (4 episodes)
 • Heroes on Both Sides (the fall of the Geonosian factories could have made the civilian Separatists more willing to pursue diplomacy)
 • Nightsisters/Savage (3 episodes)
 • Mortis, Citadel, Deception, etc.
 • Ventress/Maul (4 episodes)

Even if we try to bring Maul into the mix as soon as possible, there has to be some arcs placed between the S3 Nightsisters arc and the S4 Ventress/Maul. For example in the S4 episodes Boba Fett and Bossk have already escaped prison as depicted in “Deception”.

Luke’s wig is one of those small details that you can’t unsee and it always reminds me of how rushed was the film. Besides having already seen a snippet of how jonh’s version would look like, I’m really hyped for it whenever it’s finished.

For those interested in (I’m talking to you RogueLeader 😄 ), here’s a very early, unrefined version of how the arrival at Jedha (ex-Pasaana) would look and sound: https://youtu.be/LrnAIDbjwkQ

Regarding all the discussion about turning Pasaana into Jedha, I’m totally down to help with that! That’s a change I’ve wanted to make from the beginning, there’s several ways you can implement this change in interesting ways, and there are a lot of good reasons to do so, I think.

I’m really interested in doing this change now that I’ve come to the realisation it’s pretty plausible (more so than turning Ajan Kloss into Naboo, or Exegol into Korriban). Maybe I can take to doing some dialogue tweaks or doing some Photoshop mock-ups.

Instead of Han and Finn capturing Phasma in order for her to lower the shields, you could change the screen graphics to show the larger portion of the map that they need. Basically, Phasma is forced to give them the other half of the map, which Kylo Ren says they have at different points in the film. So no planetary shield, they drop out of hyperspace close to the planet only to not be detected by their sensors.

This is actually a pretty cool idea.

Maybe you could merge Supply Lines with Storm over Ryloth and juxtapose the Anakin/space plotline with the Cham Syndulla/that Nikto Jedi scenes. The Toydaria/Lott Dod angle would be gone, while the Jedi general and his clones’ final stand could happen just after the Core Ship is destroyed by Anakin, allowing for the supply ships to break through.

I honestly kind of like the humor involving the B1 droids 😄 though yeah it should be reduced to whenever they don’t break the mood of the scene.

If you place the Nelvaan arc + Padmé right after Ahsoka’s departure; you’d only need to cut Padmé’s reaction to Anakin’s scar. Either way, her embracing Anakin could be seen as supporting him after losing Ahsoka.

The scene of Dooku and Grievous I’d say it should be kept later in the war. TCW didn’t include a lot of Grievous in its later seasons because of the untimely cancellation. It also makes a reference to the Outer Rim Sieges. Or you could split it in two:

 • the first half with Dooku and Grievous sparring could be a part of the opening, after Grievous’s first victory against the Jedi.
 • the second half with Sidious could be placed after Nelvaan (maybe right before the battle of Coruscant), because it establishes the context of the last year of the war: the Separatists purposefully retreat into the Outer Rim to lure the Jedi away from Coruscant.

I believe less Grievous is more. He’s supposed to have a fearsome reputation both as a fighter and as a tactical leader, but the show (especially the earlier seasons) doesn’t deliver on that. So by cutting the episodes where he doesn’t do crap (like Duel of the droids) you can make Grievous feel more like a mysterious presence, building more of a mystique around him that pays off whenever he does something badass or crucial (i.e. wiping out the Nightsisters, attacking Kamino, masterminding a terrorist attack on Coruscant, etc.).

Don’t know if you’re in need of feedback for your ranking system but off the top of my head I can think of these:

 • Vital: Mandalore, Nightsisters/Maul, Ahsoka’s trial, Order 66
 • Important: Citadel, Umbara, Onderon, Sifo-Dyas, Yoda’s trip to Moraband.
 • Desirable: Zygerrian slavers, Obi-Wan undercover, Heroes on Both Sides (probably one of the better-executed political episodes and lays some groundwork for the Onderon arc and Lux Bonteri’s story, but the follow up episodes pale in comparison)
 • Objectionable: Duel of the droids, D-Squad, The Disappeared (JarJar and Windu).

I’d like to se the Malevolence arc included; it builds on the early relationship between Ahsoka and Anakin, it establishes Ahsoka’s bond with Plo Koon which is a nice touch, Grievous is a decent enough antagonist that actually gets away with destroying some medical ships, etc. Maybe the last episode where everyone infiltrates the cruiser could be abridged, but it’s overall one of the better arcs of Season 1.

I guess including Ahsoka’s walkabout is necessary for her character development, but that arc has terrible pacing (not enough story to fill up four episodes). It should be framed as a typical Mando side-quest story where the protagonist meets the character of the week, agrees to help them, then right to business. Hopefully avoiding detours like the rogue droid on Coruscant and the entire third episode.

Jedha’s the best option because it’s practical and interesting. And in terms of cobbling together the word “Jedha” to replace people saying “Pasaana”, pretty much everyone says “Jed-i” at some point, then you just need a generic “uh” sound, which should be easy to find.

Pasaana is named twice in the film. One when Rey says she’s gonna start her quest there, and one when a female Imperial officer reports to Kylo about the location of the necklace.

Rey’s delivery is rather mild so redubbing it would not be difficult to redub to Jedha, plus there’s plenty of places where she says “Jedi”. The other character is shown from the sides so her mouth movements are less noticeable and I’d say even easier to lipsync.

Jedha is not that unique in the visual aspect (even though someone could make the asteroid field visible from the surface, to make the sky look more alien) but I’d rather have a familiar planet than a new one that doesn’t look new. This could make for a nice editing collaboration.

Changing the color of Ajan Kloss is also an interesting idea, though likely more time-consuming as that planet features heavily throughout the film.

If we’re going to retcon Pasaana as a known planet, I believe it should be Jedha, as it was suggested many pages ago.

 • Both planets share their filming location (Wadi Rum, Jordan) and look very similar.
 • Jedha was a pilgrimage site for believers in the Force and a former stronghold of the Jedi. It makes sense for Ochi to go there and for Luke to follow him on his quest for Exegol.
 • The festival of ancestors could be turned into a a religious liturgy for any of the cults seen in Rogue One.
 • Immediately after their escape, the heroes hide in an asteroid field. It could be retconned into a ring of debris orbiting Jedha as a result of the Death Star firing on it.

The only challenges I see would be the redubbing of some dialogue where Pasaana is mentioned by name, and digitally altering the planet as seen from space (adding the asteroid field around it, plus a huge crater or chunk of floating debris where the holy city was supposed to be).

I’m totally on board with this. The Clone Wars is possibly my favorite source of Star Wars entertainment along with the OT and the Mandalorian, but sometimes it gets a bit daunting to rewatch because of the out-of-order timeline, and specially all the filler and questionable arcs (i.e. D-Squad).

Though I like Kane’s and smudger’s 2-hour approach (perfect for movie nights); the Mandalorian has really gotten me accustomed to episodes of variable length. If this project pays off it will definitely make me revisit TCW much more often. So I’m looking forward to it!

Good episode. I’m pleased they’ve started to balance these side-quest stories with driving the main plot forwards and getting to know more about Gideon’s Empire remnant.

Not gonna lie, I’m intrigued by the cloning storyline and the possible connections with Snoke/Palpatine but I wouldn’t mind if it turns out to be a red herring and the Child’s ‘M-words’ are for something else. I just really want Lucasfilm to make some sense of the ST’s chaotic backstory.

What were your "I called it" moments?

I remember having predicted Starkiller Base to be a Death Star ripoff and that the general story outline of TFA would closely follow A New Hope’s plot, based on the trailers.
Also Rogue One ending with the Tantive IV, Kylo getting redeemed in part thanks to Leia’s death, Rey ending up single and becoming a ‘honorary’ Skywalker.

I rewatched it today to process it better. What a fantastic episode, its lackluster length notwithstanding. I’m glad the plot is finally moving forward and loved seeing Bo-Katan. Also it surprised me that Bryce Dallas Howard directed this chapter. A very nice step-up from her previous one.

I can’t speak for those who haven’t seen the Filoniverse since literally everyone at my home is familiar with Ahsoka and Bo thanks to Clone Wars. But I’d say this chapter explains itself pretty well for casual fans. I felt Bo-Katan’s appearance is justified and I’m really hyped for the possibility of her facing Gideon and how the Darksaber is going to factor in all of this.

I had dismissed the rumors of Bo-Katan appearing, even though the possibilities got higher after Boba and Cobb appeared in chapter 9. So seeing her was, in words of Palpatine, a surprise to be sure but a welcome one. Bo’s armor looked fantastic in live action, and the fact they got Katee Sackhoff to play her is enough for me to forgive the issues with her age.

I’ll admit I went apesh*t when Ahsoka got name-dropped, though my expectations for her debut remain tempered once again. I really hope they knock it out of the park and do Ahsoka justice without compromising the quality of the show. As I mentioned earlier, Bo-Katan was a good enough example of how to do it.

Also let’s acknowledge some love for Mr. and Mrs. Frog, the best live action Star Wars couple since Han and Leia.
