Info Wanted: Will the 2006 Japanese OUT look better than the 2006 US OUT?

I wonder if the OT bonus discs are coming out in Japan…

That begs an interesting question, actually. (A question that was originally posed in the X0 Project thread…)

I wonder: Will there actually be a difference in how the discs are mastered for the Japanese market?

Anecdotal evidence:

  • there are always releases of Star Wars for the Japanese market. If anything, Star Wars is probably like 7-11 and Mickey Mouse: made in the USA, but more popular and more widely available in Japan than at “home”

  • there has to be a separate edition for Japan, due to the need for subtitles (and dubbing, at least for the 2004 DVD release).

  • most DVD players these days will output “blacker-than-black” – presumably 0 to 7 IRE

  • the LD masters appear to be the same for the Japanese THX LDs and the US Faces LDs (same dropouts, etc., for example)

  • the Japanese THX LDs look nicer (at least in my opinion) than the US Faces LDs

That begs an interesting question, actually. Which I have posted to a different thread...

The Special Collection laserdisk set from Japan, is that in NTSC format? I think they use the same NTSC video standard in Japan as we do here in the U.S., but I'm not sure.

yes NTSC just like the in the USA.

Not quite: Japan uses NTSC-J, which has no pedestal (I think it's called?). So blacks run from 0, not 16. In other words, NTSC-J is a little better than what's available in the US or Canada, because it has a slightly wider dynamic range. Of course, it sort of makes sense that this fix was made, because NTSC wasn't adopted in Japan until after it could have been fixed in North America, too. But by then it was too late...

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

How about this: find a reel of 35mm film—any copyrighted movie on 35mm—hand that to your contact, and see how that turns out. If that's a smashing success (post some frames here for an opinion on just how smashing?), then collectively we can concentrate on getting a 35mm print of the droids we're all looking for.

All these film project ideas have suffered from this cart-before-the-horse problem. It's like thinking, "Gee, it'd be so cool to drive around in a Formula 1 car," then buying the hugely-expensive F1 car without first figuring out the equally tricky (but probably cheaper) problem of where to drive it.

I don't think that's right. What the FCC is mandating is that all over the air TV stations conform to a (the ATSC?) digital standard. ATSC covers both SD and HD digital resolutions. So SD could be with us for quite some time to come, and TV stations will not be forced to upsample SD to HD.

And of course all bets are off when it comes to cable or satellite or IPTV. Although I guess of those, only cable still has a large analog subscriber base.

Edit: Ha, ha: I said "us," even though I'm Canadian, and therefore the FCC has no (direct) power over me...

Sure you can. You've got more pixels to play with, and thus you certainly can "enhance the picture quality." It won't be as good as a real anamorphic transfer -- you are certainly correct in implying that there is no new real picture information available by upsampling -- but with clever algorithms it is definitely possible to make an upsample look nicer than the input. Check out Doom9.org to see examples.

I think a couple of these have answers:

A3: Sadly, yes, there will be widescreen and fullscreen discs available in North America. Note that it's only the 2004 SE version that will be fullscreen, though: I believe both FS and WS versions will have the same non-anamorphic widescreen OUT included.

A4: It looks like at least Best Buy Canada will have an exclusive tin case containing all three films. The price at the moment is CA$ 87.99. But strictly speaking, the three films are available individually for the first time on DVD.

Remember what Lucas said about the OOT not existing....?

I think you'll find that the AVID system is for making edit decisions digitally, not edits. I believe the film is still cut, once the EDL is worked out on the AVID. Might not be true any longer, now that 2k scans are getting to be commonplace, but Last Crusade is certainly pre-DI territory.

Thanks, boris. The specs for R4 releases don't have any omissions or other annoying features (like higher compression or something stupid), do they? I've read in the past that often the R4 release of some films is compromised in some way, when compared to the R1 -- or even the R2? -- release (which is one of the reasons that antipodean consumers have a high rate of region-free DVD player adoption, presumably).

I want the highest quality OUT DVDs, so I'm thinking of getting the PAL versions. So I'm going to have to buy from someplace overseas. I'm an English speaker, so I may as well buy from the UK, Australia, or NZ. And of those, I imagine that the UK market is by far the largest, and therefore the selection and prices will probably be best.

So, for those of you in the UK (Moth3r, for example?), which online retailer would you recommend?

I'm in Canada, so I could also work out something if somebody wants a Best Buy metal case. (Please don't PM me; send e-mail to the address below).
