Paint Wars: A New Hope
Time
This is awesome! I'm glad to see this continue -- it's my favourite not-quite-a-video project.

I'm still pretty stunned by your pace, ZigFried -- 10 images per day is fast and furious. Everyone's a fan, and we'd all like to see you finish, and finish with your sanity intact. I don't think anyone here would mind if you decided to cut that back a bit. 50 images per week (you're taking weekends off, right??) is a lot!

Looking forward to following this project again!

ZigFried's Archival Saga (* unfinished project *)
Time
Hey, ZigFried:

You say you want to contribute to the forum, which is cool. Lots of people lurk forever, and the most they offer up is their two cents now and again. Like me, for example. So to be inspired to create something novel is highly admirable. You've got a lot of potential here on this forum. I think I'm among many people here who figure your best work to date has been the absolutely killer Paint Wars, and that your obvious talent is wasted taking on the pretty... uh... "mundane" task of doing DVD -> AVI -> DVD conversions. So I would respectfully submit you've already begun a highly-worthy contribution, and I would urge you to continue your excellent and unique Paint Wars series.

I was totally shocked by how quickly you were pumping out pictures, but it seems as though it came at a price: you've decided from your brief spurt of work that it's going to be too difficult to finish the whole film. I say, "Well, duh!" If you work at that pace, it's got to be draining. I couldn't believe you got as far as you did in such a short time. Crazy!

But how about setting a much more modest target, over a longer period of time? Aim for 10 pictures a week (say...), and don't let it take up more time than that. Or at least average 10 pictures a week -- if you feel inspired to crank out 20 one week and none the next, so be it. If you average 10 pictures for each 2 minutes of film time, then ANH will take about 500 more pictures. 10 a week, and you'd be finished up by next Christmas, easy.

You've got a lot of support here on the forum. It'd be cool if you could channel that goodwill and positive vibe into a nice, stable, completable project!

Star Wars HD coming in November! All SIX movies!

Ha! Yeah, maybe...

I don't know precisely what 5C is (it's encryption of some sort), but I do know what it does: it disables output of the raw data by Firewire (aka IEEE 1394), which means you can't dump the movie to your harddrive unencrypted.

Probably the easiest route forward is to give the make and model of your PVR, your location (city, state), and the name of your cable provider. From that, someone can sort out if it's likely you've got 5C applied or not. Saves you the hassle of sorting out a bunch of cables and applications, only to find it was a hopeless task to begin with.

Well, it depends on your cable provider. The next step requires you do a little research, or provide enough information for someone else to do the research. Neither has happened. Is there 5C encryption on the capture? Yes? Then there's no chance (at the moment). No? Then it's pretty simple.

Told you.

I'm sure someone did. Hopefully it will show up one day.

I doubt it. It will be superseded by the superior, h264-encoded, 5C-free version airing in January on SkyHD. Just like it's pretty much been pre-empted by the PremierHD airing (German language crawl and subs notwithstanding).

Proving once again that the best place to get American HD movies is Europe.

I thought no one was able to rip it? If they were, where are these reports coming from and why are we having this discussion?
People on AVS Forum have reported sizes. Is it possible that their PVRs could report sizes? I think some of those poster are also archiving to D-VHS. It's possible some of them even have cable without 5C, but that's not entirely clear from their posts, and my attempts to PM have gone unanswered.

No you can't combine it. You'd have to slow down the video then as well.

Sure. As others have mentioned, that's easy. Combining Premiere and Cinemax video and adding DVD audio is no big deal in AviSynth. The result can be rendered as DivX, if nothing else. I think there are also solutions for rendering MPEG-2 at MP@HL, and muxing as a transport stream. Then you've got HD quality video, at the original framerate and audio pitch. Perfect.

Yeah, if we were able to get the Cinemax crawls and scenes with subs, then it would be possible to render out the whole film in English, with the correct 23.976 fps framerate, with DD5.1 audio. It could be done in a day or so (per film), I'd imagine.

People are reporting a size of about 10 GB for each of the three original films from Cinemax. The highest number I've seen quoted is 12 GB, I think -- and who knows what all that includes; there's some "bonus material" that may be included in that total.

The real pain is 5C encryption, when applied (i.e. often). Haven't seen that anybody has broken that. DVD Jon, where are you??

No matter: in six weeks, when Sky broadcasts the OT in HD, all will be well. Sky HD and Premiere HD are both considerably better than anything available in North America, anyway.

Ironically, very soon the only people not able to capture and watch American movies in HD, will be Americans.

You answered your own question!

edit: I imagine there are hacks for cable boxes similar to region-free hacks for dvd players to disable 5c restrictions.

Well, then I think you'd be wrong. I haven't heard of that sort of wizardry being available, at least not yet. I haven't looked too hard for it, though, so you may be right. DFnyc will probably confirm that there is no solution for his box, at the very least.

Dude, you really have no idea what you're talking about. It has nothing to do with his PVR. It's encoded by the cable company.

Yes, and where does that manifest itself? Right: at the PVR. Why get all esoteric about 5C being part of the incoming bitstream, when it's whether or not the PVR will dump the stuff out via 1394 (for whatever reason) that matters? Do you really think that irrelevant technical distinction makes any difference to a self-professed noob? He's got a PVR that will either allow or disallow the trilogy out via 1394, end of story.

I suggested posting the model of PVR and the location, which should determine which cable company, and whether or not they have a history of using 5C encryption on Cinemax. With the location and model, one could also do a very thorough search (on AVS Forum, say) to find out exactly what the deal is. There are a lot of clever HD-capping people out there, and most of them are not on this forum.

Might I remind you, DFnyc, you were wrong about being able to cap HBO-HD. So I don't think you're in such a good position to be deciding who "really [has] no idea what you're talking about." Let's keep it civil, shall we? And focus on determining whether or not it's ever going to be possible to find a 5C-less cap of our fave trilogy in HD from Cinemax?

First of all, you don't have to do anything. It's your PVR, it's your subscription, it's your time. So as much as any of the rest of us want to get a copy (and I'm on that list, of course), if we really wanted it that bad, we'd sign up our damn selves. Or, as in the case of so many of us who don't live in the US, we'd just learn to live without.

If, on the other hand, you'd like to take a shot at getting this going, I guess the first -- and possibly only -- thing you'd have to do is to check whether 5C is enabled on your HD-PVR. Or, if you indicate where you are and what model PVR you're using, maybe others can research that for you.

If it turns out there's no 5C, then things start to get fun!

Wrong.

NONE of the channels are readily cappable. 5c will probably be "on" for all the premium channels.

Huh?? My brother caps from HBO-HD all the time. I also know that several people have dumped Cinemax HD to D-VHS. So if there's any 5C, it's "copy once" at worst. And there is evidence that there's actually no 5C.

You mean "cable provider", don't you?

Is there any post-capture 5C decryption possible? Although I guess that's moot: if you can't get the file out via 1394, then I guess it doesn't matter if you could decrypt it or not.
