Personally, I've started from scratch, and I think I own more SW LDs, DVB, and HD than anyone I know, except for Blaine Young. I'm a little bit of a nutcase. But the only way to start with good materials is to do it yourself.

Anyhoo.
The question was about AviSynth: Depending on what input your MPEG-2 encoder needs, YUY2, YV12 or RGB might be needed. The encoded MPEG-2 DVD stream will be YV12, which is 4:2:0, and which is why many people who are starting with DVD as a source like to use YV12. Anything more is sort of overkill if all you're going to do is re-encode. YUY2 is, I think, 4:2:2, so more colour information is retained during processing. RGB is effectively 4:4:4 (although it's not planar), and therefore really good for processing, but not good for space and processing speed.
If I was starting with LD-sourced stuff capped to HuffYUV as either YUY2 or RGB, then I wouldn't want to go to YV12 until the encoding stage. If it was capped as DV (which is 4:2:0 for NTSC -- same as DVD), then I wouldn't worry too much about conversion to YV12 before encoding.
[My disclaimer: I just dredged this up from memory; I didn't do any recent research. One word: Google. Another couple of words: Doom9.org]

How about using the Internet suffix, JA? Or the Olympic identifier, JPN? Or, shorten 'Japanese Special Collection' to JSC?
I still figure this set is inferior to the THX versions, due to video noise. The small increase in sharpness and avoidance of the very few motion artifacts doesn't really improve the viewing experience all that much.

Guilty as charged: I've never tried to composite a space battle.
However, I have done a bunch of stuff that was impossible in 1975/76, and so I'm extrapolating a little. What you see in any blockbuster movie is the bleeding edge of movie software development, so of course it's still going to be somewhat difficult. But if people are making their own fan films that feature a lengthy Star Wars chase scene (a la Revelations), then it can't be as difficult now as it was when it was done for ESB. I tended toward hyperbole, but my point is simple: suggesting scenes should have been shot in 1975/76 in such a way as can only now be done digitally is a little unfair to the amazing achievements ILM realized way back when.

Sure: about 6 years and two hugely-successful (financially, I'm talking) movies later. New optical printers, etc., all paid for by profits from SW and ESB.

I got two discs:
1. Ep I. Just some brief flipping through shows Neimoidians speaking English, as per usual. Jar Jar's still in, also speaking English.
2. Ep IV. Many of the 2004 scenes still in, but an abbreviated approach to Mos Eisley, and almost nothing in the cantina.
Whose work is this? Gotta know to fill in my judging sheet...

The Battle of Yavin is like 30 ships on maybe 100 because of two main reasons, I'd submit:
1. It was based in large part on historical, real dogfight footage; and
2. Filming and compositing that many things was already a montrously-difficult chore for which ILM practically had to invent equipment to manage.
I happen to think that most of the other battles in the prequel trilogy should have been more like the Battle of Yavin: fewer ships, more real drama. These huge-ass zillion-person space battles are meaningless eye candy. I mean, buzz droids? What crap. Part of what makes the Yavin battle gripping is the fact that it's closer to reality (i.e. real footage of real aerial battles) than the video game-like stuff from the PT. Especially Ep III: you don't see Anakin and Obi-Wan (nor any clones) actually do any real fighting against real adversaries. They fly around, do some fancy-ass rolls, make some droll comments, send several clones to their deaths, and then mosey on up to a heavily-defended starship that happens to have a critical component for the shields mounted on the outside of the ship, and presumably not covered by shields itself. If you want to talk about inconsistencies in plot, etc., why not toss that around for a bit?
Also, it's hard to comprehend now -- more than 30 years later -- just how absolutely brilliant the engineers at ILM in 1975/76 were, to be able to "film" a battle of spaceships and make it look really convincing. In my opinion, now that you can just plop in a thousand other elements with a few mouse clicks and composite the whole thing without half trying doesn't mean you should plop in a thousand other elements.

In fact, maybe only an .ifo and a .bup need to be changed? Something like that?
If someone's got both versions and is interesting in pursuing this, then I'll find out more about how to make a patch.

I wish Lucasfilm had stuck the 'Backstroke' subs on as an Easter Egg. Woulda beat the bootleggers at their own game (no point whatsoever to get the boot, if the subs are on the retail version), given Uncle George or one of his many minions a chance to explain and laugh off (and gain some street cred from) the pathetic job of subbing, and have been subtle enough that only uber-nerds like us would care about finding them and playing the whole movie with them.
If anyone's thinking of making a cover, might I suggest something almost identical to the retail box, but with a subtle, re-written blurb describing the history of this gem? Don't go makin' it all NSFW with 'R2, do you is f**king' or anything.

I've been without Internet access for a couple of days (ISP's fault), so I couldn't have done anything before now. And when I go to get started, somebody's already taken care of it! Nice.
Now, I hope somebody starts to pick this apart, and suggest how it could be re-assembled in some decent quality.

The way that both NTSC and PAL versions have the same video flaw could be because they come from the same HD master tape. I'm not saying I'm sure they did, but they could have. There is a good chance that the master is HD. Even if that was dubbed down to sub-masters, those sub-masters could show the same flaw if it was added early on in the chain.
On the other hand, knowing that Faces has this same flaw, and that it's a frame before a cut, I'd have to agree that there is a stronger possibility that it's on the film itself.

I'd have to disagree. That really looks like a video problem, not film. Film problems are more commonly vertical, because that's the direction film moves. A perfectly-horizontal (i.e. one scan line) flaw like that must be a telecine artifact.
The fact that these flaws appear on both German and French (and Spanish?) versions is almost certainly because they're from the same master tape.
