Hi y'all, here's the last couple I'm likely to attempt for a while - just rounding out my set of rental-style covers with one more Empire version (so that's four options in total now!) and finally Jedi.

I'll zip up the complete set in a little while for convenient downloading. Hope you like them, and of course let me know if you can suggest any improvements!

Thanks :)

You should probably take a look at your screen brightness, the black levels are a bit varied (particularly around the THX and Lucasfilm logos at the bottom of the spine).

I've had the same trouble myself (with my first mainly-black cover), so I know what a PitA it is to fix. If you're using Photoshop you could just try using 'levels' to squeeze down the blacks to a consistent tone, if you follow my meaning.

By the way, apologies to fans of the X-Wings in the top right - they were a casualty of the resizing/cropping that was needed to maintain the right proportions.

It's much nicer without Yoda, isn't it? I don't know the history of the piece, so maybe someone else can fill me in, but I assume he was added after the original theatrical run - since the cat was out of the bag, maybe they figured they could use him more in the publicity? Anyway, it's a shame he looks like such an afterthought there.

Ben - go for it! I did Star Wars already (a few pages back) and I'll do Jedi next, but have no plans to do the prequels so feel free to have a crack. Happy to send/upload the psd file if it's any use to you.

Bingo - give me a day or so and I'll knock together a style B with the GWtW art. I came down on the side of this one initially because (a) it's my personal favourite and (b) the overall content is derived from this old rental cover, but retro-styled to look like the original Star Wars rental release, if that makes any kind of sense whatsoever.

I noted that this one had the 'Star Wars Saga Continues' text too, so I didn't feel particularly compelled to change that part...

An NTSC disc would only play in a player if the player was NTSC-compatible, so my information is not incorrect. It may be that PAL players tend to be NTSC-compatible as well, in which case those discs would play. What ESF said about the discs looking lousy if played on those players is wrong; they'd look no different. I explained that the 3:2 pulldown effect only affects movies. I get a similar pulldown effect when I watch PAL DVDs of US TV shows, because it's adapted from 30fps to 25.

As for your speed-corrected edition, there's probably a few here who'd be interested.

Pupil is absolutely correct - all PAL DVD players can play NTSC discs. However, your TV might be less happy - if the player is just outputting straight NTSC, older CRT screens might not be able to display that properly. Some of my earlier players had a 'quasi PAL' option to overcome this, but I think that was specific to that manufacturer (Samsung).

Anyway, PAL DVD player + fairly modern TV = NTSC compatible. On an LCD screen the difference in framerate is virtually irrelevant, so it boils down to your choice between correct speed (NTSC for film sources) and higher resolution (PAL).

Can anyone here help me out with a font?

I'm trying to put together matching ESB and Jedi versions of my Star Wars UK rental VHS cover (http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-DVD-Covers/post/347811/#post347811 ), but of course this will necessitate the creation of all-new text (as opposed to 'simply' scanning what was on the original).

The font I would need for the cover credits is Serif Gothic Bold, or failing that, the free equivalent Serenade Two Bold - I'm having a heck of a time actually obtaining either of them.

If anyone has either of these, I'd be very grateful - just send me a PM. Cheers :)

Alien Appendix #3: The Alien Archive (Released)
Time
Hi everyone. I get an email every time this thread gets bumped so I haven't been far away - it's great to see that there's still enthusiasm for the project, and I'm sorry I haven't had more to contribute recently.
I can't speak for Meedermow (who I haven't been in touch with, not sure if he even frequents this forum any longer?), but here's the best progress report I can give...

The Aliens Archive is about 60% finished, but it's proved to be an unbelievable PitA! Compared with the Alien Archive - which was a breeze to put together - I've hit so many problems and frustrations with this compilation that I've had to leave it and come back to it about 5 or 6 times.
It's all been rather infuriating, but since I'm not about to distribute a substandard product, it's resulted in a painful lack of progress. Add to that the common story of lack of personal time (I'm embarking on a new career which has literally required me to go back to school, so free time has not exactly been plentiful) and I haven't stood much of a chance to get things done. So, sorry again - I would have very much liked to keep up the productivity on these, but circumstances have conspired against me!

Here's what I'd suggest. Having come this far, assembled the source materials and started authoring, I'd like to get this disc finished myself (if only for peace of mind!) I'll put the time in over the next few weeks, and get it done and out of the way so things can start moving again.
In the meantime, I'll send what I have for the later discs - those based around films 3 and 4 - to tb1971 (who's been this project's champion throughout, and I can't think of anyone better suited for taking over) so he and RIJIR can take on the curating and assembly of those.

On other mooted projects: the CBS cut of Aliens, which was Meedermow's 'baby', would depend on his input - not sure if that's going to happen. The super-8 Alien, which is something I'd personally love to see get done, might take a bit of time to get off the ground - RIJIR has the film, but none of us currently has the means (or, let's face it, the funds) to get that properly transferred.
Did I miss anything?

Anyway, I'm happy to see that so many folks are sticking around and keen to continue with this - looking forward to seeing what comes out of it :)

Guide to convert the GOUT DVD from 4:3 to 16:9 using freeware-tools
Time

Ah, thanks. You did make a reference to the 'progressive' setting in your first post, but I guess that's just a remnant from a different tutorial...

I missed the point about Rejig - great, I'll try that! It would have been nice to put together my own author/menus for this, but since there's nothing new I can add to the ESB project (at least, no mythic alternative soundtracks in the same vein as Star Wars) it doesn't really seem worth it.

Guide to convert the GOUT DVD from 4:3 to 16:9 using freeware-tools

I'm just making a first attempt at converting my ESB disc to 16:9 - this is a great guide, really useful. Just one or two questions, though -

In the HCgui settings it's advised to 'Open settings1 tab and choose "progressive"'. Presumably this only applies to NTSC sources? Only it seemed that the original demonstration was actually based on a PAL disc, so it seems a strange thing to suggest...

Also, VobBlanker is recommended for reintegrating the new video into the old menu structure. I've had a look, and the 'replace' option seems to need an IFO file for the new stream - does the HCgui encoder actually produce one of these, alongside the converted video?

Thanks for any thoughts!

Info Wanted: Star Wars: A New Hope - OLD TV Broadcast Rips Available?

So if its available on DVD why does everyone hate the GOUT?

Because it's a lazy, half-arsed recycle of old laserdisc masters, when it should have been a new and fully restored transfer (as sharp and detailed as the 2004 DVDs).

Do a search for 'GOUT' on here - you'll find plenty more details about that set's technical shortcomings (and some folks' very creative ways of overcoming them).

Anyway, that's not really what this particular thread is about - here we're very deliberately looking for low-tech! :-)
