Info: Pearl and Dean, Coming Attractions, theatrical Dolby Stereo logos...

don't know if you are aware but you can get 1080p versions of their titles from pearl and deans shop for £2.99

Doesnt seem to be a direct link so here: http://www.pearlanddean.com/?node_id=1.32

Thanks! I looked at that page before, but didn't notice that there were also options to download the older versions. I now have the 70s/80s version, converted to resplendent 16:9 PAL.

Regarding Dolby/DTS/THX logos, I was personally after the older stuff but I do happen to have a couple of discs of more recent idents (commercially manufactured, not entirely sure who for) - I can list the contents if there's interest for other projects.

Moth3r, that advert is fantastic - I'd completely forgotten it. I actually remember those indian specialties being quite good, but I was younger then...

Uncanny Altman, thanks for the tip on the P&D website - I've enquired about higher quality versions, which they presumably have access to - I'll keep ya'll posted.

Marshman, I'm not really sure what would be the proper Dolby Stereo logo for this vintage, but I like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsRIVD8zwQU
Do you have anything similar?

Funny how we all have our own 'ideal' nostalgic ad reel! I'd have to opt for Kia Ora and Butterkist, of course, plus maybe a Kenner SW/Palitoy toys ad (pretty sure they showed those before the films, at least here in the UK).

ALSO! BBFC rating cards - anyone have any? I guess they won't have to be too film-specific, it's easy enough to mock them up with the right name and certificate...

Signature size limit / text only? Please?
Time

I can't be the only person who's getting sick of wading through pages filled with sprawling, obnoxious signatures - actual message content is becoming harder and harder to follow.

Other forums have addressed this by imposing text-only sigs, size limits or one-sig-per-thread rules, and to my mind they're far clearer (and classier) for it.

Any chance of a bit of a crackdown on this practice? Surely there are other, less intrusive ways of expressing 'individuality'...

Does anyone know (or have) a good quality source for such things? Nostalgic type that I am, I’m tinkering with some ideas for a ‘cinema’ option on some custom DVDs (Star Wars initially, but could be equally applied to a range of classics).

So before the main feature, there will be the option to have a vintage prelude composed of such retro intro (AKA the ‘Grindhouse’ approach 😉 )

There’s plenty of stuff on Youtube (isn’t there always?) but that’s hardly a serviceable source for a DVD project. Any thoughts?

By the way, if non-UKers are wondering what Pearl and Dean is, this is what I’m talking about!

Re. menu redesign - I was tentatively looking at doing the same sort of thing with my own custom discs, but didn't get too far (back to the Alien Appendix grindstone ;-) )

I did find this guide, which seems to have some very useful directions - there's no getting around the problem of seamlessly editing the menu text and subpics, which is going to be a pain, depending on your 'shop skillz (if anyone can help you here it's Moth3r, who did a man's job on his pwnage disc).

Alien Appendix #3: The Alien Archive (Released)
Time

1. Yes - we're on AA4 now, which is very much centred on Aliens (with a section for Alien War).

2. Yes, probably! I'll just get the last few pieces together and then start a new thread announcing what to expect.

Regarding stills material, I agree that scan of interesting material would be worthwhile additions in a ROM folder, space permitting. Menu screens and slideshows are very labour-intensive (and frequently don't do justice to the quality/resolution of the source) so I'm less keen on that approach.

I'm going to send a few PMs to see what final bits and pieces we can gather up before 'locking' the compilation!

Ah, he was referring to 'fags'. I was really struggling with that one...

(Been a few years since I have been to the greatest city on earth, do they still have the phone booths? In the states pay phones have become extremely rare thanks to cell phones. Wouldn't be surprised if other cell phone heavy countries in the world also did away with them, but the red phone booths are such an iconic part of London, it'd be really a shame to see them disappear.)

Here and there, but their numbers have dwindled in the last 20 years - initially through modernisation (they were replaced by more 'contemporary' glass and steel booths in the 80s and 90s), and yes, phone booths in general have become less important thanks to the mobile phone (cellphone) scourge!

Covent Garden would seem to be the best place to look for them now... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_telephone_box

Does anybody know where to find the 93 commentaries? Just relistened to the 04 ones and beat my head against the wall...I never knew SW could get sooo boring!

They're on the Dr Gonzo laserdisc transfers (maybe others too - Editdroid?) IIRC they're fairly intermittent, rather than wall-to-wall observations, but I suppose commentaries weren't all that common in 1993 and the potential had yet to be fully realised.

I agree that after-the-fact commentaries are generally best, as are those recorded 'live' with one participant or a small group (I'm not sure who these cut 'n' paste jobs are supposed to impress - as someone already mentioned, it's not as if we haven't heard it all before).

IMO the best commentators around are Steven Soderbergh, David Fincher and Ridley Scott (especially on the 1999 Alien disc). Technical, honest, funny and informative - what more could you ask for?

The Cinema Store is pretty great - at least it was the last time I visited. They have two shopfronts, one for mags and memorabilia, the other for books, CDs and DVDs.

IIRC the former has a basement full of older stuff - I saw Kim Newman shopping for laserdiscs there once (a few years ago, not sure if they still do lasers!)

They're here:

I can confirm that the NTSC and the PAL GOUT do have exactly the same frame count.

Ah. Christ knows what I'm doing wrong then!

I've been doing the matching by eye/ear - do you happen to know what the precise speed up / slow down ratio I need to employ is?

I'm afraid I didn't actually complete any mixing - I just started testing the process as outlined by Ady in post 26.

The capturing of the separate channels (via WinDVD and Sound Forge) seemed to work well, but when I tried syncing the mix to a PAL > NTSC converted GOUT video, it just didn't marry up properly.

Once I've laid my hands on an NTSC GOUT I should be able to do a little better!

I fooled around with the 5.1 mix a little, but I ran into a pretty major obstacle - I don't have the NTSC GOUT to sync it to, only the PAL, and none of the speed conversions I've tried on video or audio are entirely successful (I suspect the NTSC and PAL versions don't have exactly the same content frame-wise).

Does anyone know a good place to get the R1s in the UK?

Info: Super 8 of 'Raiders Of The Lost Ark' - anything special about this?
Time

I had a nose around to see if anyone had already done a transfer - doesn't look that way.

What I might do to begin with is try a quick'n'dirty transfer using a projector and camcorder (the best tools I have access to locally!) so folks can have a look at what lies within.

If it's particularly fun or unusual, we can talk about doing it a bit more seriously. I'd think this would be a job for Puggo, if only his hands weren't very full of Grande at the moment... let's see what comes up!

I just found out that someone I know has a super 8 copy of RotLA. It’s colour with magnetic sound, 330ft (on one reel, so I’m guessing it’s fairly abridged!)

Haven’t looked at it very closely, but it seems to be clean and complete - I was wondering if there’s anything particularly interesting about this version, or interest in preservation from a purely nostalgic point of view?
