Upscaling Robocop Criterion (Released)
Time

The sync is done! If you PM'd me recently about this project (Criterion laserdisc audio for 4K Blu-ray video) I'll be getting back to you with a link - if anyone else wants it just give me a shout.

I've spliced on the sound for the opening/closing MGM logos so the track can be used as-is (and I know Andrea likes the lion's roar ;-) ) but I'd seriously recommend using tsMuxer to mux in the new track, while setting the following times for cutting under 'split & cut':

Start 15.00 secs

End 6192.00 secs

This will cleanly remove the MGM stuff so the movie starts with the Orion logo (as is good and proper).

Special thanks to zeropc for the original rips, and to everyone who helped out with the links!

For what? The audio? I very much doubt it'll be a case of sync and go - there'll be frame differences at all the reel changes at the very least. Whoever syncs this will have to do a fairly precise job of it, and the best reference will be the DTS-HD from the Blu to ensure picture sync (MGM logo and all).

After the two have been matched up, the logo can be eliminated at the mux stage for those who so desire.

for display at 1024x768 square pixels (you do accept that, right?)

No, I don't ;)

And I'm pretty sure, you've used the word "effective" wrong, as the effective resolution of a PAL DVD is always going to be 720x576, no matter how big you stretch that image. That's all I wanted to point out.

Ah, I mistyped the second resolution statement (of course it isn't 1024x768, I meant 1024x576 as per my initial post).

It's quite possible I used the word 'effective' wrong in an attempt to differentiate from 'actual' (are the two in fact the same, then?) I was simply trying to express to the OP that a 16:9 PAL image imported into a square pixel 1920x1080 workspace will occupy 1024x576 pixels; a considerably more generous starting point for upscaling than non-anamorphic letterboxed NTSC (the next best thing from laserdisc sources) and one that yields impressive results if using a high quality scaling engine (I use InstantHD with Adobe, but I appreciate more folks around these parts are Avisynth inclined).

I chimed in here because I've been doing a lot of this kind of thing myself - making intro reels for various films using original cinema ads and trailers. It's frustrating at times because of the low quality of most sources - I've had to employ quite the bag of tricks to make scuzzy SD stuff sit happily next to the HD main feature. I've quickly realised that Youtube rips are pretty unconvincing - soft is ok, blocky is not. I'll be very interested to see your results if you share them (and I hope there are more helpful leads on SW trailers!)

back when TVs and broadcast signals were launched, they didn't use resolutions like 1024x768

Well, no. They didn't.

BD authoring help - I need some testers and experts
Time

How strange! It must be said that MultiAVCHD's interface is quite dense and often unintuitive, so it's quite possible that an option hasn't been properly enabled/disabled on one of the authoring screens. Can you re-check your project for 'compatibility features' (probably around the menu area)?

It's unlikely that you will be able to convert the existing disc to a compliant structure and still retain the menus. ClownBD is an astonishingly good tool that can take almost anything (including HD-DVDs) and turn them into compliant BDs, but the result is movie-only.

Just to answer another question, I couldn't recall if I'd tested Halloween yet so I had a look in my Panasonic standalone. It loads and plays smoothly, no issues. Navigation is a little slow (chapter searching and scanning) but I've often found that to be an issue with x264 encodes - it's certainly not particular to your projects.

Escape From New York [spoRv] *BD-25 RELEASED*
Time

Hi Andrea, so sorry to hear your latest project is causing you such woes!

Some quick observations from here:

Positives: My Panasonic DMP-BDT220 loaded up the disc just fine, immediately recognising it as a BD disc. The loading screens and main menus appeared without a fault. When I play the movie, it plays and navigates smoothly so I have no problem enjoying the excellent restoration.

Negatives: The audio menu is unresponsive, and after I click down a few options it gives up altogether and flips back to the main menu. As a result I couldn't access the commentary this way. Similarly, the chapter menu is unresponsive and when I finally accessed the second screen it locked up altogether, necessitating a restart of the machine (a first for this player!)

It's a pity that MultiACVHD's authoring and menu structure seem to be less compliant than they should be - it's a nice enough tool, and I frequently use its playlist merging feature to author multi-part discs (without menus). Contacting the author might help to iron out these issues.

On a side note, I admit I was a little surprised to see the modern MGM logo at the start - not only is is anachronistic, but they weren't even the theatrical distributor (that being AVCO Embassy according to IMDB). If you should happen to go to a V2, might I politely suggest its removal or substitution?

1977 UK theatre intro reconstruction (Released)
Time

Thanks for the bump Bingo. I've actually just updated this reel to go on my DeEd 2.5 disc - I've made a few alterations and additions and used some higher quality sources for many sections.

Here's the new version, albeit in rather low quality (my grain filters played merry hell with the high compression rate needed by Vimeo):

https://vimeo.com/77330966

I'd love to use more 'local' cinema continuity (as shown in your second link) but I haven't found such things outside of Youtube and 720p isn't very forgiving of lower quality sources. I made an exception for the Old Spice ad at 2:51 because I love it so, but even that I hope to upgrade at some point.

As always, any ideas for improvement are welcome!

Re. Encore: the CS6 version can still be installed via CC but you need to use a 'special process' (read: workaround).

Tried this, but the "download Premiere CS6" option on the Premiere page has been removed. I think the documentation is out-of-date.

Nope, just did it myself and it's right there. Did you select the CS6 version from the dropdown?
