No amount of ignore button is going to magically change things back to the way they were. The problem comes down to our members. We want people to stop bitching while we ourselves are bitching about others. We want people to respect each other while we disrespect other members in the process. We want people to stop being rude to each other while we continue to be rude to whomever we want. I can’t call Frink the “t” word anymore but others including himself can call people trolls all day long. Frink was asked to stop going after others about their posting habits yet I still found him in project threads doing just that. I reported him but he’s still here. You’ve got folks like warbler who demand certain people be banned but his own behavior isn’t exactly saintly.
This affects everyone. We can’t have our cake and eat it too here. Maybe what some of you should be asking for is a “certain members only” section so you can limit who gets to enter. This way you can probably still pick and chose which requests from Jay you want to follow as you do here in off topic.
In the end, I don’t think anyone figured that some members would come out of the woodwork because they were tired of the project threads being littered with some of this BS by some that resided mostly in off topic. Once it happened, the person who came was the problem, and not the person that eventually brought them here.
I was completely happy in the projects section of the site. I never gave off topic a real look. It was Frink and his incessant off topic meanderings about people he didn’t like in the project threads that ultimately drew me here. I reported him so many times in the project threads that I lost count but nothing ever changed. He kept coming and kept egging people on. I finally had enough so I came here. Now, magically, it’s my fault that off topic sucks.
Maybe we need to take a real hard look at what actually upsets us and why. It might help people take a look at their own behavior instead of always complaining about others.
FTR, I will say that I have had some fairly unsavory moments myself, mostly out of frustration. Since Jay made public requests for things to mellow I believe I have had far better conversation between some folks and less haphazard ramblings. To me that is a plus. It shows that adjusting ones tactics to how they post can help. If everyone took this opportunity to do so I think we’d see things change for the better and people who really need to be weeded out get booted.
